Is this game something like oblivion or a more linear path game without free roaming? It's been a while since I enjoyed a good first person rpg. Although, there is always TQ for more hack'n'slash.Very Happy

It is hard to categorize. No its not really as open as Oblivion, kinda linear but its got so much to do you hardly feel restricted. I guess you can go through just the plot but there is so much interesting sidequests jammed-packed in, it feels like there is a ton more to do than even the free-roam games like Oblivion or Gothic.

But yeah, def give it a try. Once you get past the first chapter, its almost guaranteed to suck you in.

It's definitely not linear. Choices you make actually has a consequence, and there are so many side-quests to do that you will keep yourself busy a very long time should you choose to do them all.

Dialogue options and interaction in general is also a lot better than in Oblivion.

What makes "The Witcher" a better RPG is the fact that once you made a choice, you cannot unmake it - or "try the other side" (eg. join all the guilds that have diametral opposites). To try a different path you'd either have to load a save before you made it, or play the game again.

With that said, there *IS* a main plot, but how it reveals itself is connected to what you do and the choices you make.

With this in mind, the world in "The Witcher" is not as grand as in any Elder Scrolls game, though I would say that there are at least as many quests and possibilities of interaction.

Another thing that might make one not like "The Witcher" is that you're stuck with the main hero, you can't play the game as another character - you can only affect this character's skills, and there are some skills that work better for how the game is made. For instance, you are more likely to run into large quantities of "human" enemies than monsters, so the steel group-skill is somewhat better. And definitely better than "quick style".

These on a grand scale however do not really make the game any worse - it's a fricken awesome game, and I don't see myself "running through it just to get to the end", I'm really enjoying the stories, sidequests use of language and environments. The lack of censorship in the game is welcome too. I'm glad some developers understand that limiting the games from "adult" content is a design-flaw, nothing else.

Thanks for the extensive input. Smile

So, what are the masteries you can make? Necro/summoner, mage, battlemage, knight, etc or is it more narrowed down to the specific story to more unique and fewer variations?

you don't exaclty have different character classes. Geralt (main character) is a witcher, and as such he is very skilled in sword fighting and also knows some magic spells, so that's what you can enhance.
with skill points you can simply enhance his spells a bit or increase his sword skills, but you can not become a true mage who doesnt fight with the sword at all. the spells help you in battle but the main means of fighting are your swords, no matter where you put your skillpoints in.

it's based on the books so obviously they can't make a witcher become a summoner, necromancer, mage or thief all of a sudden.

It looks like it's closes to dark messiah than oblivion rpg fps. I hope it doesn't get boring as fast as dark messiah turned out to be.

What really makes this game stand out from Oblivion and most other rpgs is the details. The game world is dark and grim a cynical take on the fantasy genre where elves are not as fair and wise as they are in LOTR. When you run around Vizimia, little kids run after you and when you talk to them they say your big and ugly.
You can screw chicks, ppl taunt you by remarking on your looks and calling you a freak. The immersion is on the same level as my all time favorite rpg Morrowind, and just like in Morrowind you can just let go and get lost in the game, spending hours doing side quests, fighting, playing dice etc
Sure the game is a bit more on the action side than Morrowind was but that is not all bad as the combat system is alot more fun than bethesdas masterpiece.
I will defineatelly buy this game and I urge all of you to do the same.

I think basing on the pre-defined character the development aspects are similar to "Two Worlds". In both games you play that type of "bounty-hunter"-character witch a predefined hero and are required to skill within these limitations.
But in "Two Worlds" there is a wider range, your hero can become a pure mage or ranged fighter what is not possible in Witcher.

I am trying to skill the magic in Witcher and am satisfied so far. The fire and telekinesis spells are effective and considering there is no other real "ranged weapon" in Witcher the fire spell is the only way to deal damage without going in close combat (burn-effect, I am trying to maximize it)

Generally I agree this is a fantastic game as long as you dont espect a Oblivion-like experience. You dont have the freedom to do everything, join everywhere and has not to fear real consequences (all is reversible in the one or other way) of your decisions. This game is the exact opposite, almost everything your character does has consequences, there is less freedom and more linear design but still enough freedom to enjoy sidequests and exploring the area.
Only weaknesses so far in my opinion are the shitty inventory, the loading times and the unblanced difficulty (Boss fights sometimes far too frustrating). The game is also not exactly for item-fetish players, stick with TitanQuest or get Hellgate, if you need that

I really dont like that you cant jump/climb or fall of edges, or dive, it really kills much of the immersion, and its no fun to explore without it.. Loading times are awful, Boss Fights are silly (seems to be more luck than skill/tactics) 7/10.

You see how when myths spread mouth to mouth, how exaggerated they can get?

Person A to Person B: "You know, I've seen it, it's a fierce dog, and it's glowing."
Person B to Person C: "It's some kind of warewolf, with huge teeth and kills everything on its path."
Person C to Person D: "It's a huge monster, a wild beast that kills women and children!"
Person D to Haxxorz Party in Lineage 2: "TIS TEH PWNZORZZZZ!!!!!"

I think it's just another bit of realism. Unless it was something also by chance.

That actually happened when I met a bard in the market district during the third act of the game, he asked who I was and since I didn't see any reason to lie I simply told him I was Geralt of Rivia which made him quite upset since I according to him, dared to pretend I was the famous monster slaying witcher whom had supposedly died a few years ago.
(Explained via certain sidequests if you manage to do them or even find them, also explained in the last book if I understod correctly but only the first book is currently translated to English.)

EDIT: You could also lie ofcourse and tell him another name, one of those was quite weird but probably would have given some equally weird and funny response if selected.

This game is great! It pulls you right in with all its little details and lore. Even the dice game looks awesome lol

Man, its a long time ago that i listen to what everyone has to say without skipping it, and that i read everything that is added in the Journal. I think the last rpg that pulled me in like that was KOTOR II.

About the game, the should make like a bag or something to put your alchemy ingredients in. The inventory is damm small. Sad
