To get 5.1 surround sound in gears of war do the following steps.
First you gotta click on start, then click on my documents then my games then Gears Of War For Windows then Wargame then config (the logs directory can be found in the wargame directory too)
5.1 Surround (credit to mrsid)
Spoiler: |
1. Edit warengineusersettings.ini and change these to the following:
UseEffectsProcessing=True
DeviceName=
2. Run Gears of War, go to Audio options, then set audio effects to off. Then quit the game.
3. Then you open the latest log file in the logs folder. Under this log look for this:
Init: AL_RENDERER : SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio [B880] (THIS IS AN EXAMPLE, VALUES WILL VARY BASED ON SOUNDCARD)
4. Now copy the AL_RENDERER value from the log file (the value is SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio [B880] in this case) and then paste it into the warengineusersettings.ini under DeviceName=
5. Now your warengineusersettings.ini will look like this:
UseEffectsProcessing=True
DeviceName=SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio [B880]
6. Save it, load gears and enjoy surround sound.

HAMACHI LAN FIX!!
Someone hex edited some shit to get lan working and some people confirmed it working. So link is in my sig if you guys want to try it out. I'll be testing as well once I get someone to do it with.
Code: | Usage instructions:
1. Overwrite existing files keeping directory structure.
2. Launch game and play.
Live support was disabled (profile will be saved in your My Games folder) and only LAN games will work.
There won't be any checks for ping and game will be fully playable over Hamachi or any other VPN.
If you want to play over Hamachi, make sure that Hamachi virtual adapter is in higher priority than
your all other network connections.
Yes, all players will have Player1 as a name, it is not changeable unless you "hex" OnlineSubsystemPC.u.
P.S. You can disable startup movies by removing StartupMovie from WarEngine.ini

Ok, a few tips:
The installer is bugged, and sometimes doesn't allow to change the install dir. A workaround I cooked up is to install a program called NTFS Link and create a junction point in the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\" called "Gears of War" and have it point to a different folder (or even a folder on a different drive). Installer is dumb though, so drive C: will still have to have 10GB (without editor) or 12GB (with editor) for install to start installing.
If the game refuses to start after install, and it crashes with a C++/kernel32.dll error, try deleting the "My Documents\My Games\Gears of War Saves" folder. This took care of the problem I had.
Of course, the Live redistribution thingey (if it hasn't been installed automatically by install) and the C++ Redistribution package.
That's my input for now.

A lot of people are getting the WarGame-G4WLive.exe as well as me crashing out of the game. Are there any fixes for this yet? Kinda lame 100's of people can't play who bought it cause it crashes like crazy, and the forums are pretty much useless.

on some board they say its Dual-core processor bug , the same like in Test drive Unlimited
the only solution they gave is to install new AMD drivers + Amd dual core optimizer , the same for Intel processors

It seems like it's happening more with AMD processors and even more with AMD video cards. I never had a crush during gameplay in neither Vista or XP. In my XP machine I went back to the 163.75 drivers but I'm sure this is irrelevant (it was when the game wouldn't start, but I solved it in another way).
I did however notice there's something for AMD CPU users that comes with the game. I'm not sure if that's the drivers, but try installing that.
My guess is that devs tested it on Intel CPUs and nVidia video cards and called the day off

That is the newest processor driver from AMD, but it does not change a thing and GoW randomly CTD's within 2 minutes.

I'd suggest you try to run the game in Vista, but you'll head-shoot me instantly, so I won't even try.
It's just that the crashes are occurring less on 32bit Vista installations than with XP. That's what I've gathered from some forums.

Well I have the razor one, proper release and it won't let me create a profile so the game doesn't save. Also, if I try to adjust video or audio in the options the game won't return to the main menu so I have to shut it down with task manager. Anyone having the same problem?

I don't want to ruin my ratio!!!
It's hard to keep it as it is with a shitty 28KB/s upload speed maximum.
I'll just hope someone will release some kind of a fix. If not then, I might download the Razor one later. I'm not rushing anywhere, I still got COD4 to play. |
Ick, I remember trying to keep my ratio up, didn't mind much till these huge games started coming out. If I find a fix or something I'll update the post.

Is this a crack issue or do people who have the clone crash as well?
Does it happen to people who actually purchased the game?

Lol when i first started the game i got a message that i need to installe the newest processor drivers. I did that and it did not help |
it's the game not you, when that "crash" happens the game just minimizes, just open the window back up and you'll be able to continue playing.

SpykeZ, might wanna add this to the top, I started an MP issue/fix thread on the official forums.

Installing Windows Live

Chatting in MP (without Mic)
Open console ~
Type 'say' followed by your message. (Example: say Hey guys' what up?)
You cannot set a push to talk(Mic) at this time, if you can, please send me a PM and I'll add it to the list
Checking your Ping in multiplayer

I'm finding the game is flawless with no lag whatsoever as long as the ping is under 100.

Edit; here's the AntiAliasing solution

Download [url="http://www.nhancer.com/"]nhancer[/url] (I don't like it either, but we can't rename exec to bioshock.exe or ut3demo.exe, Nvidia will eventually fix this for us in a driver).
Set Gears of War to Oblivion/HDR (00000045) compatability for AntiAliasing.
Works great here! 1440x900, 4XAA, Max everything
