seems someone on hamachi made a little progress. Only difference what they did is they waited till the made the game server to enable their internet again.

Quote:

a friend and i made a little bit of progress on this...

If you're hosting:

1) Open your network connections.
2) right click on local area connection, click disable. (you will lose your connection)
3) open GoW. create a coop game. wait for the game to load.
4) once you are in the game, tab out and enable your network connection again.

The person who is joining your game:

1) complete steps 1 and 2
2) open GoW. go to the coop LAN browser. let it search for a game, it should say that it cant find any.
3) tab out, enable your local area connection. refresh the server browser.
4) the game appears.

We got this far .. but when my friend tries to connect, it says that the connection to the server was lost.

Start brainstorming guys lol

Ugh. I'm really liking Gears of War, but it's deleted my saved games again for the forth time. I can only play through the first part so many times before I get completely bored of it. Anyone have their saved games? Also where are they located?

I have been, that is not the issue. I've made 1 profile and have continued to use that profile for the duration of my Gears of War time.

SpykeZ: Thanks, but that didn't enable the other acts, so I'd have to restart from the beginning again anyway. Any other ideas?

My idea was to put checkpoints in there. No idea if it work tho, because I don't have the game installed anymore. Just thought it'd make sense that MS would put configs/save games in My Documents.

This is something i read over at Gameguru.box.sk it explains a workaround for the problem that some people are having when starting the game. I can't say for sure if it works because i haven't installed the game yet (12 gb ? wtf) It has something to do with Games for Windows needing to update itself. For those who don't want to follow the link here is what it says:
Quote:
You’re probably anxious to play, but wanted to let you know of a small problem (fortunately, with an easy fix). When you first play Gears of War for Windows, an automatic update to Games for Windows -- LIVE will be downloaded. But after the update is downloaded, you’re put back to the main menu of the game. If you don’t shut down the game, the update won’t complete. There’s two ways to get over this bump. The easiest is to simply shut down the game after the update is downloaded (you’ll know it’s safe because you’ll be back at the main menu, and not on the “Don’t shut down your PC while the update is being downloaded” screen). As soon as you close the game, the update will install automatically and you’re good to go. The second option is to manually install the latest Games for Windows -- LIVE update, which you can find here.

Here’s a step by step walkthrough of what happens if you choose the first option:

1.Start “Gears of War” for Windows (from Start Menu)
2.Once the game starts, press the “Home” key to open the Game for Windows -- LIVE Guide
3.Sign-in using an existing Xbox LIVE account, or create a new Games for Windows -- LIVE account (this will redirect you to a browser window, if you choose to create an account)
4.Once signed into LIVE, the user will be prompted to update the Games for Windows -- LIVE version on their machine. Select the “Yes, Update Now” option
5.Wait for the opening cinematic with the Epic Logo and the Microsoft Games Studio splash screen to play
6.Once on the main Title Screen, press “Enter” to go to the Main Menu
7.On the Main Menu, quit out of the game
8.Once you quit out of the game, the Games for Windows -- LIVE System Update will kick off. Wait for that install to complete.
9.Once that is complete, start the game again. You will have to re-login to Games for Windows – LIVE again

Microsoft Game Studios is working on a title update to be released in the near future that will allow users to avoid manually exiting “Gears of War” to apply the update. The good news is that once you go through the above process, you won't have to do it again!

From what it sounds like you have to have the latest update of Games for Windows. Maybe that's what's causing the crashes and saves being deleted. I don't know if it can be done without having a Xbox live account though. I know it sounds like too much drama to go through to play a game but what the hell but when you're playing for free you do what you have to do. If this doesn't work remember this is not my solution, i'm just passing along info trying to help.

Hey guys,

To get 5.1 surround sound in gears of war do the following steps.

First you gotta click on start, then click on my documents then my games then Gears Of War For Windows then Wargame then config (the logs directory can be found in the wargame directory too)

1. Edit warengineusersettings.ini and change these to the following:
UseEffectsProcessing=True
DeviceName=

2. Run Gears of War, go to Audio options, then set audio effects to off. Then quit the game.

3. Then you open the latest log file in the logs folder. Under this log look for this:

Init: AL_RENDERER : SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio [B880] (THIS IS AN EXAMPLE, VALUES WILL VARY BASED ON SOUNDCARD)

4. Now copy the AL_RENDERER value from the log file (the value is SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio [B880] in this case) and then paste it into the warengineusersettings.ini under DeviceName=

5. Now your warengineusersettings.ini will look like this:
UseEffectsProcessing=True
DeviceName=SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio [B880]

6. Save it, load gears and enjoy surround sound.

for all who wants to change there default installation folder from c: to any other free drive here are the steps :

Go to Start -> Run:
Type RegEdit

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

On the right side is something called: ProgramFilesDir

*Write down the current path of the ProgramFilesDir, you'll need to change it back after install*

Change this value to a drive that contains 7+ gigs of space

Install GOW

*Go back into the Registry, to ProgramFilesDir, and change it's value back to what it originally was.*

Don’t mess up your registry by doing anything else.

Hmmm, installed finally, set the settings on max except for texture (HIGH) 1024x768 on xp, specs as in the sig (no1) and it does lag at times, dunno why.

Switched off sound effects but it seems that the game has its low downs at some point in the map, regardless what you do...

Crashed once, and its because of Windows Blinds running in the background.

163.71 installed. It demanded some drivers for my x2 ... twice actually.. :<

Alebit poor performance at times it really looks and runs smoothly and nicely... Good port, but its shame to admit that my own countrymen completely sucked up with game crashing and all sorts of other problems that you people encounter.... Shame on us... SadSadSad

This is a well known step to heighten your odds for hamachi to work but this alone is seldom the "cure". Hamachi is like a lottery, for some it works in some games, for others it doesn't, no one really knows why.

you have to delete the "Generic Software"
then go to game and turn audio effects off.after that the engine will recognize your audio device.fking morons can do shit properly.all they want our fking money
after you do that you can see in log file your audio device recognized.in warengineusersettings it will allways show DeviceName=.no need to copy there anything.it works allready.sound is trully amazing when it recognizes audio device and it is true 6 channel sound too

1.go to warengine and delete the "generic software".leave "devicename=" only.
2.go to game and turn audio effects off.
3.quite the game
4.see the latest log file
it worked for me
