Firstly, the eternal question AMD or Intel?
After checking out the prices, getting an AMD 64 X2 6000+ seems like a no brainer but I read something about heating problems.
Secondly, what mobo should I get? Shouldn't be too costly (max $150), and should have a decent onboard card (more specifically, should run The Witcher ) which ill be ditching in a month for an 8800 GT Also, should I go for an SLI mobo or a normal one, coz I dont have any plans on using SLI in the near future but things might change and I dont want to regret anything...
So, currently im planning on getting this, unless someone here changes my mind...
AMD 64 X2 6000+
2GB DDR Ram
Mobo ?
8800 GT 512MB
300 GB SATA HDD
What do you think of this config? |
looks good to me. Ignore all the OMG INTEL crap. if it's amd you want then stick with it, price for performance ratio will lean to amd anyways. But if you plan on overclocking even the slightest bit the core 2 duo's excel in that department where amd don't OC very well. As for on board video, you won't find a good motherboard that uses it anymore.
Onboard video is far in the past. If you end up getting the MB with video on it, chances are it'll be some low end junk and wouldn't be running a lot of any new games.
everything looks good, for your motherboard...here ya go...one of the best

the heat pipe stuff really works wonders. I got the 939 socket design on mine and using this zalman it keeps everything on my mobo nice and cool even the memory. Fan is effin huge so it's quiet and pushes A LOT of air around so it'll hit the heatpipe heatsinks as well as your memory sticks.

Alright thanks a lot guys. I finally settled for this...
AMD X2 6000+
2 GB 800 Mhz Ram
Asus M2A-VM Mobo
300 GB SATA Seagate HDD
17" LG TFT
Geforce 8800GT 512Mb (next month)
My only concern now is whether the 8800GT will fit in the cabinet. I know my mobo has a PCI-E 16X slot, but will the card fit in physically because I just checked the dimensions and its huge! There's a heat-sink right about the 16X slot and ram slots to the right, which looks like it could get in the way of the card. Also, my cabinet in 7.5" wide, is it enough for the card? Sorry if its a stupid question, i've never bought a really high end card before...

the 8800 GT is a small card compared to others with similar performance. it should fit easily into any normal ATX tower without any trouble.
8800 GTS, Radeon 3870&3850, 8800 GTX and Ultra, all use dual slot coolers.

And the 8800GT doesn't? Damn, they really made it much better in the heat department!

I ran a GTX off a 500W PSU. As long as the 12V rails provide enough juice you're set.

BaronOfHell, all PSUs are roughly the same sizes, so don't worry about that. I'd recommend a 600W PSU to be on the safe side, and to support future upgrades.

was reading last week that they're rolling out a new reference cooler which is quieter, tho my short-term memory is crap
i'm a fan of tagan psu's too, pushed one really hard and it lasted 3 years. Sent a hiper (hyper?) M-series back as wasn't happy with it, same with an OCZ - that wasn't good at all - over-rated, meant to have good innards tho but was noisier than I was hoping for (loudest component I had). Using another Antec now but these ain't so good anymore either, but at least I can't hear it. Be sure it has at least 3 years warranty..
Not tried enermax or corsair before tho and they're got a good reputation
as well as looking out for the 12v, make sure it's at least dual-rail (min 22-24amps per 12v rail i think) and that the db levels for the fans are max 22db but ideally below 20, that's if you want it quiet, tho maybe a waste of time unless u plan to replace the gc's stock cooler. Tbh any of the brands of psu i've mentioned in this post are meant to be decent, personal experience aside..
I'd agree that to be safe you should go for 600w, i've 550w and wish i had the extra 50 as I think I'm just short on what you'd normally expect to need for SLI..
