is it possible to have two operating systems installed on one computer,BUT without reformatting?

I have winxp installed,and I would like to install ubuntu,now I dont really want to reformat my system,I have alot of important stuff ,which cannot be backed-up.

try vmware or similar virtualisation solutions like virtualbox ( http://www.virtualbox.org/ )

EDIT: A Knoppix Live-CD might also be just down your alley, as you only need to boot from your cd to check out a decent linux. You can also customize the knoppix iso to better fit your needs...

just get partition magic (not nortons) and you can split the partition during windows

Ubuntu can resize and split partitions (within the installer), and its supposed to be safe (never tried it myself tho). Just make sure you run defrag first.

I second that. I'm using VMware to run Ubuntu 7.10 on my XP. Runs great, no slow down on my 512mb RAM laptop.

Ubuntu has, like Invasor said, built in disk partitioner. It worked fine with me, shouldn't be any problem, but I'm going to try vmware, heard it's great. (just have to download new 7.10)
