Maybe like, 60KB would be cool?

or an external a bit higher so it doesn't waste space on your server.

changing a size limit is only the matter of maybe 5 clicks. Takes no more than 2 minutes on my forum to do it.

Convince me about the avatars, why would I want to see bigger and more animated images? 16k is more than enough for regular images I think...

I don't mind animated avatars, and the bandwidth is minimal when only increasing to like 60k Smile

Well considering more than 82.3% of the worlds population is on broadband (those who aren't don't know about nforce according to scientists) 60K is nothing but a split second for people to download.

Also,

av·a·tar:
1. Hindu Mythology. the descent of a deity to the earth in an incarnate form or some manifest shape; the incarnation of a god.
2. an embodiment or personification, as of a principle, attitude, or view of life.
3. Computers. a graphical image that represents a person, as on the Internet.

As most of us like to represent our character or personalities with sometimes hilarious pictures, 16KB is rather limiting to express ourselves. For a picture 16KB would do fine, but for us squirrelly fellows who like to go above and beyond, we are held to the ground by 16KB shackles of doom limiting to what our artistic masterpieces can represent.

Example: When I had the doggy going to town on the kids face. The poor puppy had to be circumcised(sp?) and reduced in quality so he could show off to the world, and was never able to finish, just had to keep repeating himself till almost satisfaction then would restart, now Rinze, put yourself in the puppies situation, how would you feel.

Hows that? Very Happy

Well i think that there should be a bigger size limit since in this day and age most people have broadband. Couple of years ago this would be an issue since broadband wasnt so much implemented. Do external avatars use bandwith of server? Someone tell me i dont know this. Oh and having bigger avatar limit doesnt mean that all people will use it. Most people here come when new game is rel. then go away so its not like everyone will have blasting lights for avatar.

Well, Spykez's and Nakitu's avatars (and signatures) seem fine to me, why change the allowed size? I say let's keep it lite and elite.

EDIT: Put some brackets to avoid confusing the squirrel.

Strange i thought that you are here to bash pc and pc games.
Anyway 60kb can hardly be compared to myspace and like i said, to have an option, doesnt mean all will use it. Can we at least get a trial period to see how it works out?

I don't think it's got to do with what kind of connections people got at home but the additional bandwidth required for the server. Although an increase from the now 16KB to the proposed 60KB won't really bring down the site/cost more but then I don't know the behind the scenes details.

I just don't want this place turning into some anime fan-site with huge banners because I've seen sigs like 350x600 Sad. It would be like three or four words of text (a standard nforce reply Razz) and then a ginormous sig. We'd spend half the time looking for the replies among the comic book.

No one's talking about increasing the sig size, only the avatar kb size, not even the dimensions of the avatar.

Imo the avatar dimensions limits could be larger. 80x80 pixels is quite small, 160x160 could make user avatars more visible and personalized (especially as some existing avatars in the library are *larger* than 80x80). For the filesize 16 KB can be enough, if you compress the image properly but 20-30 KB would be ideal.
If you give me a choice only between the 2 options I say increase to 160x160 and keep the filesize limit the same (16 KB), for a test, that way bandwidth won't suffer at all Smile

Besides, I use avatars as a quick way of identifying the posts of people I can be bothered to read. It's especially useful when skimming through a large thread.
