Don't know how important this game is for most of you, BUT!, ITS CONFIRMED 1.3 is coming!
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=545224#post545224
This has been a BIG deal in the subsim community for the past weeks, with petitions and stuff, and we just had a OK from their lead designer!

That's great news. I still haven't even installed SH4, I've been waiting for patches (like with Gothic3, let's hope we have a confirmation for that as well)

CaptainCox, yer obviously an enthusiast, so i ask for your expert opinion on this.
I love silent hunter 3 + gray wolves, but somehow the new american theater just didnt quite fit in with me. It seemed too lifeless somehow.
I know it might do with the fact that u-boat warfare for me is well.. pretty much germany against the allies, and not the other way around. Then again, the other thing that kept me from trying Silent Hunter 4 was the fact, that people kept screaming about all kinds of horrible bugs, and interface that does not make sense and stuff like that.
So here is my question to you:
With 1.3 and some of the mods out there, is the game worth playing over SH3 + gray wolves? Apart from the eyecandy part ofc.

Well, lets put it like this.
There is a certain atmosphere in the Atlantic Theatre of Operation (Germans/ Allies) at least for me as a European, I know the locations very well, the stories of the skippers etc, so playing SH4 was for me a somewhat new experience as i had to "learn" the history + all the locations in the Pacific and so on.
You hear a lot of romantic stories about U-Boots and the Germans etc, but I was not to familiar with the stories of the "Silent Service", but its as romantic and immersive when you get in to it.
After 1.3 there is a hell of an improvement compared to previous patches game play wise and bug wise ( the Devs really listened to the community on this one). The Japs are a harder nut to crack etc. But to say that its up to par with GWX and soon GWX 1.4 is another matter. SH3+GWX have had 2 years to evolve, and still is with GWX 1.04, so it would not be 100% fair to compare with SH4 as it is now.
SH4 is a dam good game but and its getting better by the day due to the many mods done so far.
Eye candy hell yea!, game play 85% of what it will be when fully developed. As I said, after 1.3 its become a really good game, that's for sure!
Here is a mod list of stuff i run at the mo (mostly mine )

Quote: | I am very pleased to announce that the recently announced patch v1.4 is not the end of Ubisoft's support of Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific. There will also be an add-on entitled: "Silent Hunter IV: Wolves of the Pacific U-Boat Missions". This add-on is scheduled to be released in Spring 2008 and will add a number of additional features to the game, including a German Campaign in the Indian Ocean, new resources and submarines to use, as well as Hero crewmembers! Below are some of the details:
German Campaign in the Indian Ocean: The new campaign spans from July 1943 until end of war, in May 1945. Players will operate from such far off Japanese naval bases as Penang, Singapore, Jakarta and Surabaya.
Strategic Warfare: As the player rises in rank and experience he gains access to new strategic resources such as recon aircraft that track down enemy shipping and even battle groups that can help wipe out superior enemy forces.
New Playable Submarines: Take to the seas in the long range Type IX-D2 U-boat and the revolutionary Walther propulsion type XVIII U-boat. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of these boats and how you can overcome even elite late war allied destroyers with high speed hit and run attacks.
Heroes: Based on actual historical figures, these new crewmembers add a number of special abilities that can change the fate of battle and save the ship when the time is right, as well as adding historical color to the game. |

can't wait to get that addon.. I prefer german subs.
Liked silent hunter 3 a lot more than silent hunter 4.
the new features they mentioned also sound interesting.

Yep, I just can't get into SH4 despite liking many of its features. It was rushed - I'm sure the setting could have worked had they approached it differently though (I'm not someone that thinks enjoyment is purely down to setting but to execution and in SH3 it just seemed a more complete game for many reasons than just difficulty - for example we take a lot from movies and stories based on German u-boats in with us and that makes it more immersive I think)

I just couldn't get into SH 4. Sinking Japs just doesn't have the same satisfaction as sinking Allies. That, and I couldn't be arsed to re-learn everything again. Will give it another go with this new patch out however, thanks for the info.

I couldn't find a Silent Hunter 3 thread, so I am posting here.
So I installed the Grey Wolves mod, but I can't find the realism settings page. It's not like I used to have the page and now I don't, it's just that I don't remember where it is. Don't know if it's related to the mod at all.
Actually I only want to enable the surface marker for the u-boat when you use the external camera (yes, I use the external cam most of the time, heh)

I think the "marker" can not be switched on and off using the Gray Wolfs mod...not 100%, but I think they took that away as a part of the realism in that mod.
Prob is I dont have that game installed at the mo, but in the one of "ORIG GAME" folders, there is graphics for it...I know its maybe not going to be easy to find, but go to
DATA/Misc/UMark.tga
That is the graphics used for the mark. Now copy that over to the same location but in the Gray Wolfs folder...I think that might do the trick.

I have no "orig game" and no "grey wolves" folder. Mod manager ftl ? Doesn't matter, in a while I will have no "SilentHunterIII" folder, hehe.
Ahh, installing that Grey Wolves mod was a big mistake. I play a lot from the external camera, the absense of the mark, no realism settings and the goddamn graphic change (too dark, must have been that atmasphere mod, light version my ass) killed the game for me (this time around). It's nearly impossible to see anything underwater. Realism sucks ! lolz
Anyway, screw SH3, its days are over, I'm uninstalling it, shift-deleting the grey wolves mod while cursing at god and installing SH4, yeah baby !

Well, both games are totally ace actually. As SH3 came out over 2 years ago, its a bit dated graphics wise, but for hard core sim players it has more depth as its been modded and modded again. SH4 is probably the best looking WWII sim ever made. A lot of mods for that as well, but I think with the coming add on we will see more "German" mods for it.
So basically both are top sims in my book, but I tended to play SH4 more as its better looking, but that's me.
