anyone use to remember when patches were 15 mb 240... yeesh, and ive seen bigger (ie FEAR).. just how fucking unready were the original releases to warrant patches like these....?
if games unready for release reflect the size of their patches, im not looking forward to the 1.3 gb monster the crysis patch will be

Well, the game sizes gets bigger overall, its just natural that patches get bigger too (most is more detailed textures, sounds etc.). But sure, there seem to be another attitude among developers, that a unfinished game is more acceptable with the excuse of patches.

now thats just stupid by any measure... 1.9gb patch? i cant believe any developer would have the balls to actually do something that ludicrously pathetic...

Yeah, on some of the larger maps, on specific areas I have some dropdowns, which are inexplicable. You have this huge map, if I look from a high ground on it, the fps is great, but if I go to exactly that area (which doesn't necessarily has something to stressful), I'd get to the low 20s of fps? Seems like unoptimized to me.

Yeah, unfortunately I am just getting the freezes for 10 seconds. I just upgraded my chipset drivers and that didn't work. I will be going along at 90fps consistently and then freeze! Really frustrating since it really screws me up in a fire fight. It happens at any time with no pattern. I can be in a fire fight or not doesn't matter. Really sad since I am having a blast trying to win this same Warfare map. 5 failures in a row now. Really tough, the AI for the enemy is really good and my AI teammates is terrible. Go figure!

I agree, it seems to an engine code problem with UT3. Unoptimized is looking like a possibility. It runs so good and then tanks!

i d rather think it s a map-design issue. At least if it is dependend on the areas you re in. Else it could also be a problem with engine / drivers.
Back when q3a was still popular i used to help people with their custom maps by beta-testing them for gameplay and other issues the main issue that fucked up rendering speeds was usually culling issues, where the map-data wasnt optimized enough, so the renderer would compute more data as was visible.
So, even if that part of hte level doesnt look exceptionally hard to put together in comparison, the renderer might go about rendering stuff you dont see, because the level-geometry-data might be unoptimized.
Since i have yet to install UT3 i cant really check where it sucks FPS-wise, so take the above with the usual grain of salt and tequilla =)

The thing is, when you build a level in UEd, it optimizes the hell out of it, so I think it would take something extraordinary to make an unoptimized map.
