Microsft unbanning consoles???
From zdnet - http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=1047
The other day I reported that I was getting emails in from disgruntled Xbox Live users who had been banned by Microsoft for allegedly connecting to the online service using modded consoles even though the consoles were totally unmodified. Today I’m hearing that some of those affected are finally getting somewhere with tech support
Initially, Microsoft’s response had been that the process used to identify modded consoles (a process that would allow the console to play backed up game) was 100% accurate and that there was nothing that Microsoft or users could do other than buy a new console. At the time Microsoft wouldn’t even take the consoles in to be checked or repair. Now is seems that things have changed. I’m still waiting for official word from Microsoft but according to several affected gamers that I have spoken to, Microsoft is now backing down from the initial stance and some consoles are being unbanned and others taken in for repair.
As to what the magic words that you have to say to tech support are in order to be listened to, I’m not sure, but I imagine that polite persistence is the way to go

I dont think anything will come of it... I mean, M$ has no reason to believe that they are banning unmodded systems... They just might as well give up on trying to detect Modders all together! That would be the way to go... Since Modders are sometimes right behind them with a way to get past thier detection process!

Isn't exactly concrete proof , They have latched onto the banning story with the guess it was the dash update
How can it tell if its copied depending on response time , anyone with a fairly scratched disc would be pumped

As far as i know only unbanned consoles can even make it to the update screen so the fact that he managed to update it himself is proof enough that the console was not banned.

No you sold him the console already banned. And told the poor guy it was not banned. Now you want to screw him and get away with it.

Refunding the money is up to you but paypal is not gonna help him.
He can file complaint, paypal will ask you for proof that you shipped it, you send them the tracking, then they don't care after that.

You cannot update shit via xbox live, with an already banned console period.

Guys,
Two questions. Firstly, do you NEED to do the december update for certain games? If so, what games?
Secondly, if I only ever connect to Xbox Live with official games or no games in the drive, and completely disconnect before putting a copied disk in, will this avoid bans?
Thanks!

Microsoft can still detect your copied games, I never connected my xbox to my network whilst using a copied game but they still got me.

1. Their will be games in the future, don't know if there are any available yet... The update will then be most likely also on the game dvd
2. Some people are reporting being banned even when they never ever playd a backup online (so disconnect your network connection when playing a copy)
I've been playing quit alot online the last couple of days but with a legit version of COD 4 but before I used to play with a backup so I've still got a big chance of getting banned.
If you really wanne be safe then just buy a new xbox and use that one only for retail copies and keep your ald one for all the backups you don't care of playing online (that's what I'm gonna do when they ban me, again)

I am worried about the first question tbh, i can see future games requiring your box to be updated to the latest version. ok so they will have to put the latest update on the game dvd for those who don't have internet connection..
but maybe they will be able to detect our banned consoles via the update! leaving the xbox un-updatable?
I'm sure it wouldn't take long for a hacked update or workaround though... or not

That's what they did since day 1. Every game comes with the newest update and it's required to run the game.

Why should they suddenly do this now? They delivered already countless updates with game discs and so far every update worked on modded consoles. I think it would even be against the law in several countries if they wouldn't let you update your machine to play the new games.
