A friend has a computer that works 100% fine when it's on. However when you try to load the computer with the power button 80% of the time the power comes on (no beep from the motherboard) and the monitor stays on standby.

The other 20% of the time the computer turns on, beeps and comes to life as per normal.

I've replaced the battery on the motherboard and can only think it's a problem with the BIOS.

Whats the best advice to resolve this?

Probably more the power supply.

I know that when hardware is getting old, you can have weird problem like this.
The mb is maybe defect too.

M8, I just had to RMA a brand new Asus board because of a bad bios chip. Exact same issue.

Try updating the BIOS, sometimes it fixes it. I doubt it's the power supply honestly, you'd get more weird results with a bad PS...

Have you tried manually setting RAM voltages and timings? I've found sometimes tables for memory aren't optimal...

Also, check to make sure the front connectors are connected properly.

Yes, I agree, it is power supply or defective motherboard.

I suppose these guys could be right, try the PS in another box (I doubt it's the PS, but try it in another box none the less ).

not sure tbh but I had a similar problem when my mb was on it's way out. I have a suspicion that it may not have been grounded properly..

guess it could be a number of things tho Sad hopefully someone has a better idea..

Have you tried the mobo and PSU out of the case? I've had it where a couple of times they work fine out of the case and it won't work within the case.

Well tbh I do think it's something to do with the power or the BIOS itself. There's a option in the bios to ignore all errors on boot. So now it boots 70% of the time correctly... the other still the same problem.

The bios has a restore utility, tho im more worried about it restoring incorrectly thus making the motherboard useless.

It's about 3 years old the PC, and has not had a problem like this before. odd.

Take it out of the case both the psu and mobo. Short out the front case pins to switch it on. You won't need and hdd's or optical drives attached.

I bet you have better results that way.

I tried that; tbh i think its the power supply with the motherboard. If i completely turn everything off from the mains then back on. then the computer boots normal.

Blooming thing - probably be easier to buy a new mobo.
