Do they need like a monthly subscription to work?

Nope they don't, you're talking about like a Garmin Nuvi? Those work without any subscription. If your ride has no Nav - depending on your needs I suggest just buying a nice Double DIN head-unit that's Stereo/DVD/Nav all together. That way, if you care about your ride at least it looks much cleaner and professional. Most come with a HD now that has storage for a ton of songs + uploadable mapping.

But if you need it in multiple cars grab one of the "Stick on windshield here" ones.

OR if you are just asking out of curiosity and don't even need one....

I was just thinking about it cause I wanted one cause I suck horribly at navigating and have no sense of direction. I saw a commercial about it and remember none of my friends knew if you needed a subscription or anything.

So how does it work, you just put in your destination and updates itself to the roads or something?

Yeah they have antenna's/recievers built into them. If looking to go somewhere specific then just enter the destination. Otherwise it will constantly update your current location. They are pretty accurate with current speed, ETA, etc. And most have voice guidence as safety measures to keep your eyes on the road. I got one for my mom (who doesn't even use it Rolling Eyes ) But I think they are wonderful.

Just remember you get what you pay for with these GPS units. I can't stand a cumbersome interface or hard on the eye map graphics (Yes this isn't the PC gaming section, i know Wink )

This is what my aftermarket Nav looks like:

Was thinking about getting one, can get one for 900 euro, cheapest in Norway. Reviews say its pretty average, and all you need if you don't use it alot (whatever that means)

TomTom is damn overpriced, thats for sure.

bump.

Thinking about getting my parents a GPS for christmas.

now, how easy are these things to use? if it is complicated my parents will not use the thing, so I want to keep it simple (no media player or other stuff is needed, just simple navigation).

anyone ever used any of these GPS models?

I just got a Magellan 1200 for 99Euro (special offer in Germany) Bloody brilliant!
Has everything!. Just plug it in and start, even has warnings for speed cameras and stuff. I think 8 different languages, super easy interface (touch screen)...Many ppl at wok bought it to. Had a TomTom at a business trip to Holland yesterday, its also 100% ok, but the Magellan can do basically the same stuff for way less money. And the voice is 50% better then on the TomTom...very natural. Only drawback is that the speaker is a bit boxy sounding on the Magellan, but that's about the only negative thing I can say about it.

But go to a shop and try them out. At Mediamarkt here in Germany there are like 30 different models displayed on a wall, and you just try them out etc.

You can also dl new maps and stuff as long as U get a bigger card and a card reader, as it uses same maps as the TomTom from "NAVTEQ"

TomTom and Garmin are two brands that have good experience with GPS:es, so I´d personally pick one of those.

If anything the average handheld GPS takes no more then 30 mins to get aquainted with. This of course applies to the "ancient" peoples. Laughing

Otherwise the average Joe will find most of the interfaces and selections intuitive.
