Ok, asking for a friend here.
He has a laptop with VISTA and a Desktop with W98.
He basically wants to transfer data from the W98 machine to the VISTA Laptop using cable.

Now, I never did stuff like this so if someone could explain the steps needed to set this up, I would be very grateful. Thanks!

Could he not just use a USB key? You could prob network them together but 98 has brutal network support so prob USB key would be the easiest, there are such cables known as transfer cables that operate through USB designed to make the transfer proccess easier, but I'm not sure how well they work in 98, FYI google "Windows 98 mass storage drivers" to get USB key support in 98 Wink

Ok, at the mo he has no such cable (obvious) and he needs this sort a working NOW! .
Would it help if he can run this between VISTA (the Laptop) and a XP puter? again with the LAN cable ?

If he doesn't have any hub/router/switch he will need an ethernet crossover cable, otherwise simply link both PCs to it with "RJ45" (sic, 8P8C connectors) cables and transfer files via its local network.
If he want to do that via an USB key he will -maybe- need to install USB drivers over win 98.

Yeah I usually use a Crossover cable and when that's an inconvenience set-up both PC's for file sharing and just transfer via network.
