XP SP2 (Legal)
P4 3.2
2Gb RAM
6800GT 256Mb
500W PSU
3 IDE HDD's (2x250, 1x120[OS DRIVE])
2x SATA (300Gb)
Ok, for the past week or so I've been experiencing random OS freezes, they do not cause the machine to crash, nor do they cause any program to crash. They stop the mouse from moving, if audio is playing it repeats until the machine "starts" again, video stops completely. After the freeze I can hear a gentle click sound coming from the machine.
My instant reaction was that the HDD was dying, however, I would imagine a dying HDD would cause a full crash, it would also show other signs of death such as louder crunching sounds, nothing like that is happening. Not to mention the OS would be running in RAM not from the HDD, so it shouldn't freeze, just die. My next reaction was that the PSU was dying, that the click was some form of component coming on to regulate the voltage (I can't remember the name of the electronic component that clicks in this way.. having a brain fart..  ).. This was backed up by me noticing the fan in the front of my machine having stopped about a min after one of these freezes.
Any other thoughts?
I havent had a chance to look around for answers or do any testing as I've been busy working, but I will be doing some checks this weekend!

A:Did you tried reinstall windows

A:Click sound ? from where ? one of the fans ? on what component ?
Q:I think they are from the PSU region , noticing the fan in the front of my machine having stopped about a min after one of these freezes
A:How old is your PSU and what brand , and if you are sure about that click and this PSu is one of those Cheap Ass kind then get a new one or something has gotten into that PSU like dirt/dust for example

Run memtest over night.
Dieing HDD can in fact cause OS freezes, experienced myself 
Dieing PSU usually shows symptoms when computer is under heavy load for example when playing a game (artifacts in games, crashing games). So if your OS freezes when it's idle I wouldn't think it's dieing PSU but of course could be over wise, you never know for sure with computer hardware

Here's another possibility. A process running/updating in the background and hogging resources. That repeating audio is a symptom of 'stuck' programs.

if you are using kaspersky, that is the culprit. I had the same problems and couldnt figure out where it came from and KIS was the last thing i thought of. You can either update to the newest version 321 (which seems to have some problems of its own) or disable the keylogger-detection feature in the proactive defense settings...
