Apologies if this thread has been started before, but I talked to a friend of mine today and he's received his second letter from these jokers.

Basically if you’re on BT and you've allegedly tried to download one of these Codemasters classics, then the chances are you’re being threatened with court action, or pay up at least £500.00.

First, don't pay anything.
Don't contact the company.
Don't put the letter in the bin.
Contact your local Citizens Advice for forming a legal defence.
If you believe you’re innocent of the offence then contact trading standards. They need to be aware of what's going on.
Contact OFCOM, Watchdog etc:
Contact your ISP, and ask whether evidence of your downloading activity has been requested by a body outside of the UK (This could be illegal). This will form part of your defence.

This letter could be misleading/illegal: Why?

The court, they refer too, has not heard the case, there may be nothing to hear.
No name is mentioned to the recipient, odd when they claim to have forensic evidence.
Counsel acting for defendants of original ‘Pinball Case’ has had no official reply in nearly a year.
s107 of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act, clearly states that unless used for commercial reasons, file sharing is not a criminal activity.
Allegations should not be made by high street solicitor, but by Trading Standards Officers.

Common opinion is that this is a crude bluff to frighten and intimidate people.

In Italy during July 2007, the Courts decided that Logistep (working on behalf of Davenport Lyons) invaded the privacy of internet users and the information it gathered could not be used in a lawsuit

Codemasters, shame on you for dealing with, Davenport Lyons and Logistep. Your attempts to intimidate and frighten people are ignorant, and deceitful.

While file sharing is a thorny issue for many developers, this is not an appropriate behaviour for a publisher of your statue and influence on the industry.

You will alienate the very people you should be encouraging to buy your product.

Yes British Telecom

No, I don't use torrent, I'm acting on behalf of an individual who's become fearfull and paranoid by a cynical scam designed to frighten people.
