Right now they only have eight episodes scheduled for the fourth season because of the WGA strike. It's gonna be a short season, but who cares anyway, Lost has jumped the shark a long time ago.
It might be a good thing, since they must get straight to the point. I liked all of the seasons, but sometimes it felt a bit drowned out, like its here because we must kill a few hours so watch this bs. Some of the flashbacks were painfully boring and had nothing to do with the main story, now they might concentrate on the important flashbacks, (hope there will be more of the Locke's flashbacks). Look at dexter, its relatively short but all of the episodes are awesome, and everything that happened fit in perfectly, didnt feel like anything was tacked on to kill a few minutes IMO.

Well they filmed all the scripts. It's not like cable where they write a season and film it all. Like The Shield's 7th and last season has been written and filmed already and premieres in April. Most shows write and film as they go along. They started filming late summer (I think late August). By the time the writers strike hit they had 8 episodes filmed. And remember scripts are always being tweaked and revised until the episode is filmed. It's not like they have Season 4, 5 and 6 written already. That's impossible. They just have an idea where it's going and how to tell it.

Is there a way to convert the 720p epsiodes in divx? I don't understand why they continue to use the mkv format that is not supported by dvd players. HD is possible on divx too that's really incredibile.

Because it is a very useful container, not a format. With it you can put in many soundtracks, subtitles, video types...etc...
