Glad I still have NWN2 + MotB untouched, this thread just goes to show how there's really only a handful of good CRPG's out there.
Dragon Age is still TBA status and think Sacred 2 was delayed as well so there's not much to look for in the coming months. Glad my bro is getting X360 so i can steal it and play Mass Effect, at least. Very Happy

For the OP, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology_of_computer_role-playing_games is a pretty comprehensive list of CRPG's (only one I know of, anyway), could be a few hidden gems there you might've missed. And some games really become fresh and new again with some mods, those are always worth a look when thinking of replaying some old games.

Thanks to that wiki page I remembered that I loved demo of Anachronox, but because It ran a bit slow on my comp I didn't get. After that I completely forgot about it, so I happily went and got it now...
only to find that it runs worse on dual-core and geforce than it did on duron with vodoo2.

System Shock 2

Scariest game I've ever played.Similar to Deus Ex but way better IMHO. People have come up with updated texture patches for the game. Not crucial, but it'll make the game even scarier with the better looking models.

I have to say Guild Wars.
No warez chance thou, but it's so cheap and has crap loads of things to do and above all it's fun.
3 years now and still playing. With all add-ons and shit there's so much to do.You can play it alone (wich i prefer bc POS in the harder areas are usually suicide) with heroes and hencies. AI is stupid but less stupid than 70% of the normal players.

And there's PvP wich IMO is waaaaay better than WOW

How is the PvP then? Team based, taking objectives?

I loved the battlegrounds in WoW, most fun i've had in a MP game i think...

Team based mostly. Typical capturing and so on. There are many types ranging from solo with henchies to 12 vs 12 (alliance battles). You can even create max lvl character right away just for PvP an not go through the PvE building. Althou you can unlock and cap better skills and weapons in PvE only.

Get in a good guild. Guild battles are fun.

Loved Arx Fatalis, wonderful spell system. Its spiritual successor Dark Messiah of Might and Magic was great as well.

I would love to play System Shock 2 myself, but can't get it to run worth a damn on XP

Not sure if you have tried that, but if you have that problem:
You can launch the menu then after starting, the game is freezing
Then
the problem is that system shock 2 doesn't support hyperthreading and/or dual core,so you have to set affinity of process on only one CPU, to do that launch the game to menu then alt-tab and go seach in process list(ctrl-alt-del), 'sshock2.exe' then right click on it -> set affinity -> check only 1 cpu.
Hope it ll help.

If only Planescape could run normally on WinXP...

I'm afraid that from my standpoint, the only good things we can play right now; are to be played on real old machines.

Maybe it's just my 8800GTX, however, not being able to play Planescape is currently annoying the heck outta me.

I don't remember BG2 working so well either, and Final Fantasy 7 is unpredictable at best.

I can only think 'the big (again) depression'.

I am really starting to hate my...love hate relationship with evolution.

Planescape: Torment (runs fine on my machine and vista 32bit)
Sacred GOLD (can't wait for Sacred 2)
Divine Divinity (Beyond Divinity is part 2 if you want to continue the quest) (their next working title, drool: http://www.larian.com/images/nextgen/div_04.html)
Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (make sure to patch to latest and then its a great game!)
Oblivion + Addons + Expansion
Fallout Series
Baldur's Gate I & II + Expansions
Darkstone (not for everyone but a nice Diablo clone)
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
Gothic series (if you play Gothic 3 make sure your patched to latest!!!)
Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 + Expansions (fantastic!)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2
The Temple of Elemental Evil (I quite enjoyed this one)
The Bards Tale
FATE
Hellgate London (not the greatest but I like it)
Depths of Peril (lots of content but dated graphics)
The Witcher
Jade Empire (enjoyed it myself but not for everyone)
Siverfall (again I liked it but not for everyone)
Icewind Dale 1 & 2 + Expansions
Final Fantasy IV, VII, VIII
Throne of Darkness (not for everyone, I liked it)
There is one last one I would like to recommend but the name isn't coming to me, I remember the developer stopped supporting it but in the last couple years some new patches come about and it ran great. Mist or something was the name, 3D and about 4 to 5 years old if anyone can remember the title name. I have it here somewhere...

I'd like to recommend another game that never got the hype it deserved but isn't a RPG but still a fun and hilarious game, Beyond Good & Evil! Those are my recommendations, I didn't order them in which I liked the most, I just listed them as they came to mind.

Ultima VII + expansion. When it comes to interesting NPCs, lots of choices, and a living breathing world, no game has even come close even now. The only serious drawback is that the almost parodic "ye olde english" sometimes gets on your nerves. Don't forget to download Exult and run it through that, for modern machine compatibility and tasty new resolutions.

Good 1 on Beyond Good & Evil, definitely a jewel in the rough.
Basically what I'm getting with Torment is, instead of the normal 'fog of war', I have black squares...some sort of graphical glitch I guess, don't know how sound acceleration could be related to it but I'll give it a try.

Mount&Blade

Kind of indie medieval RPG. Still not completely finished IIRC but damn fun to play.

Dont give it up until you have tried group combat while riding. Probably the most enjoyable combat system i have encountered in any RPG so far.

Yeah. Avernum 5 Rolling Eyes

(Mac version is already out -> http://www.avernum.com/avernum5/index.html)

On that note I would recommend Avernum 3, the best of the old trilogy. I don't care much for the geneforge 3d characters and movement of 4 and 5, and you need no prior knowledge of Exile/Avernum 1-2 to play and enjoy three.

i used to play DAoC when first out... i still think there hasnt been a mmorpg to beat it yet. The real look to armour n castles and been able to customize ur armour and cloaks makes it cool.

is it free to play yet?
