I'm going to start after the summer and I am wondering if anyone practices/practiced Kendo here on NForce?

I teach Hapkido, Chito Ryu and Shotokan
We use some kendo techniques when weapons fighting but nothing in depth.
Thinking of taking up martial arts?

Yeah thinking of taking up Kendo, i've read a lot about it and it really seems interesting and fun. I've also read stuff that it's not only about learning how to fight but as well of giving balance, peace and harmony to your life.
I practiced Judo before but i didn't really like it i quit after 2-3 years, but its a good "starting point" for me since i'll get used to kendo quicker etc.

Yeah, I teach Idioto-Ken and we sometimes use Kendo techniques. But some people are to weak to learn Kendo, it's tough. For example my cousin's son broke his right foot's little finger when trying to punch me... It's really complicated, believe me...

Judo and Kendo are to styles that are completely different.
Ive never much fancied Judo. Thats why I went the Hapkido way.
What are you looking to get outta martial arts training? If your looking to actually defend youself on the street and in tough situations, I'd say go Hapkido or even Akido. Hapkido is a more brutal version of Akido and is Korean as oppose to Japanese.
As for bringing peace and harmony into your life? Well, that all depends on your instructor and how you learn. Ive been doing martial arts since I was 10 (20 years) and its yet to bring peace and or harmony into my life.
Doesnt bother me tho. Knowing how to defend myself and those I care about is good enough reward for me

Kendo is a japanese fencing as far as i know...
@SycoShaman
Which martial art would you say i should learn if i want to take advantage of my size and strength? (I'm 1.89 and in a great physical shape) |
Hapkido, because its so flexible. You can adapt the techniques to suit you.
Your Akido, same thing, they are both adaptive styles.

Lol! I blame those 80s movies like karate kid etc which always attribute some sort of mystical power to martial arts. A lot of people that I know that practice the martial arts are pricks. It comes mainly from the fact that they are always thinking 'I can so beat up this guy' and they're probably right too but that's beside the point.
You could say that they don't take over the philosophy associated with martial arts but I really don't buy into all that. If a person is an arrogant person to begin with, learning some fighting art will make him only a more of an idiot and a dangerous one at that.

Yeah yeah
But yeah i guess you're right, it might come to handy some day.
I'll most likely start another martial arts while i do Kendo.
Actually i'll look around if there is any hapkido dojo here. |
Yeah, Kendo would be good with an empty hand form such as hapkido or akido or numerous other styles. But if your going for brutality and quick strikes and quick endings to fights, go hapkido. In all the styles Ive fought against in my time, other hapkido practioners are the hardest.
Whatever you do tho, dont do Tae Kwon Do. Its a waste of money and there is no need to kick above the knee in all actuality. Plus, Tae Kwon Do becomes Hapkido when you reach black belt. Better go to hapkido from the get go, you'll get the leg work, plus the locks, traps, pressure points etc

Lotsa good empty hand forms. Even Shotokan, Shito Ryu, Chito Ryu, Goju etc are all solid, traditional japanese forms and will work well in a combination with kendo (or any weapon style)
