 |
I have a question regarding the layout of ASUS X38/X48 boards. Could I fit my sound card as shown in the pic below?
Reason is that the lower PCI slot would be totally obscured by my water cooling radiator. I ordered a Striker II Formula, but its not in stock yet so I could cancel it, and I just got my eyes on the "ASUS ROG Rampage Formula" with DDR2 support
LINK to REVIEW
Pic of the Rampage Formula, as you can see the PCI slot is really at the far end of the board.
Cheers!

Can't you put your radiator on the outside? Maybe uglier but it was killing too much place on your pics.

Oh dear, I really would like to keep my current set up as its pretty clean etc (please see this post for reference) http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=40697 (sort a last on page 1)
If my X-fi wont fit in that 1st PCI slot on the Rampage I will go ahead with the Formula II which is almost identical to the layout of 680i board I have now
(pic of the Formula II)
But from what I have heard the Rampage board is really sweat, that's why I ask if its possible to put the sound card in that 1st PCI slot.

Cancelled the order for the Formula II 780i, the Rampage X48 (DDR2) will simply kick its ass (actually many o mobos) when it comes in 2 weeks
I recon my sound card will fit the PCI slot above the Gracard slot. If not I could always use the sound card that comes with the board (PCI-E) (worst case but), not the same as my X-Fi, but it will do me!.

I fail to see why you need to buy those "Gamer" mobo's, usually the same mobo's are released under a normal name but with no games and no "super" cooling components on. But those that are on does the job fine, even when oc'ing and you save about 30€ by going for the cheaper board.
I managed a 55% oc on my strictly aircooled "non gamers republic" mobo and it ran through stresstest with no problems. Besides that your card will fit just fine

I know, but me WANTS! it looks so nice ( i know I will never see it as it will be in my case, but...) And i actually got it for a decent price 220 euro. A lot for a mobo but still, NICE LOOKING!
I take you on your word on that the sound card will fit
Last I checked the Rampage X48 should be in stock around the 12th this month, I just want to OC that 8500 HELL YEA!

Enthusiasts are drawn to enthusiasts boards. Even when it means they won't use 90% of the features, the fact that it has those features and knowing about them in the back of your head provides some sort of satisfaction. (Compared to buying a mainstream board)
Like buying a car with Navi knowing you'll never use the Navi, buy the one without and you say Dayuuuuuuum shoulda got it with Navi.

Spent about 7h on this today. The board will simply not post, not even in to BIOS. I tried all different crap. Might have to RMA it . One thing I did not try was using my old E6600 on it, but normally I should not have to...or?
I will call ASUS support in the morn and see what they say...probably gonna be a wild ride

You could try and put the old cpu in, sometimes these Asus boards needs a bios update before they work with the latest and the greatest.

Cheers guys. I also read about the BIOS prob with newer ASUS boards. But this is a x48 board, should be compatible with Wolfdales one would think. But then again you never know.
As for the PSU...could be that something was shorting it out...but as I am running my EVGA 680i now with the same set up I doubt it.
Anyhow will call ASUS and see what they recomend. To swap the board and try with the E6600 is something I will not do in the week anyway (to much fiddling about).

Talked to ASUS support today, explained the guy what I have and what I did. He said it must be the MOBO. So I tried to call the Inet shop where I got it from..."please send an email to our technical support section" well I did and I am still waiting ( it was maybe 5h ago)
Oh and on the BIOS side of things, there is only one BIOS for this board and that's on the board already the guy from ASUS said.

Alright, then you probably got a faulty mobo as Asus support said.

Have you tried only using one stick of ram?
I've had similar issues with Asus boards and removing all modules but 1 made it boot.

Let us know how it goes. My old (nforce 4 ultra chipset) Asus mobo died on me a while ago and I'm looking for a replacement. I'm starting to get annoyed, maybe the company doesn't rock as much as I thought ... grrr

hmm - good luck... onlineshops are sometimes a bitch, when it comes to after sales service... and this one only has a 0900 number :/
don`t know how much you paid; next time try this site:
http://geizhals.at/deutschland/?fs=Rampage+X48&in=&x=0&y=0
avoid shops, that have ratings below 2.xx - the big ones are always a good choice, f.e. mindfactory, home of hardware, bestseller computer, nord pc, and some more.
i prefer mindfactory - great service and no shipping costs, if you order between 0.00 and 6.00 in the morning.

Actually this time the Shop seems pretty decent. I wrote a mail yesterday at around 15:00 to their support. Today at around 11.00 I get a mail back saying "Please tell us when you are available and we will send a courier around to pick up the mobo" or something around those lines. Wrote them back and got an answer after lunch confirming my date and time. Can't complain...yet . They say in the mail that they will replace the faulty mobo, but I guess 1st after I send the one I have back. To be continued...

I normally ordered my stuff from "Caseking (expensive but FAST!"), "K&M Elektronik" or "Aquatuning". The reason I chose F-M this time was simply the price
(above inet shops are all German)
