From the players perspective there isn't really any narrative or plot to speak of, just static exposition through the environment. It works for the type of game it is, but it certainly isn't a 'best story' candidate. |
Not that I'm arguing your vast and flawless knowledge and your brilliant way of defining what qualifies as a game story or not, but... A whole lot of people that has actually played through the game, finds that Portal has a clever and cool story that grows on you and escalates with the progress of the game. From the mid-part of the game it's more about the story than solving puzzles.
I mean, yeah, it is a short story, like from a novel, but it's a short game also. Short aint the same thing as bad.
It also has linkage to the Half-Life universe, which makes the story more "alive".
The game has generated a fan base for the "Weighted Companion Cube" with sites that has tutorials on how you create a "Weighted Companion Cube" by yourself.
The "outro" of the game has a nice twist to it and is followed by the funny and pretty good, "Still Alive" song.
All these things considered, this game, even if it's short and doesn't have a RPG element to it, REALLY does qualify as a "best story" candidate.
I have hard to believe that a game that receives the "Best New Character Award" on G4
doesn't have a really great story attached to these characters...
Here, read up on the story and you'll see.

I normally oppose AM just for the sake of it, but he's right on this one.
The dialogue & execution is good, yes. But just because they got the feel of the game, a strong character & emotional strings plucked just right in your heart, it doesn't make a good story. Chell, meet GLaDOS, in 20 levels you'll be killing GLaDOS and then the game will end. Have a nice day.

It's funny though, what you are describing with, "dialogue & execution is good", "good feel of the game" and "strong character & emotional strings plucked just right in your heart" sounds to me pretty much like the perfect recipe for a great story.
I mean, viewed from a dramatic structure perspective, Portal has a story for sure. It has an obvious protagonist and antagonist and a clear beginning, build-up, middle, falling action (yeah, LOTS of falling! ) and end.
Short as it may be...

Atmosphere, characterization and involving gameplay are distinct from a story. Portal has all of these and it is this which draws people in and engages them, not it's story.
It has no plot, it's the character of GLaDOS that creates any sense of progression. A good story is good regardless of who it's told by, if the character of GLaDOS was not so well realised then the whole 'story' would fall flat.
So yes, it has a good character, and it's this character which blurs the lines between a scenario and a story. I mean if you were retelling the story to someone else they would probably think it sounded like a load of shit without playing it. Because devoid of the production values that valve injects into it's games the 'story' is nothing.

I think they are good storytellers if you make one game from the whole HL franchise.
I'm not into stories though but I like games that build around a good story to make it better.

Deus Ex - simply the best, period.
Then there are some other really great ones too, like the Thief games, KOTOR series, The Witcher, Fahrenheit, Wizardry 8, and I'm sure I forgot to mention a few more.
About the Half Life games having the best story: Well, maybe if you put together all of the games so far, it has a decent story. Though I have to agree, Valve is good at telling simple stories in an on-rails shooter. And I think they are lucky to have those people who created Portal, so maybe they'll help a bit with the story and design for EP3.

Baldurs Gate 2 is hard to top. Also really like KOTOR, damn fine twist there with you being Revan, caught me off guard the first time around
A small sidenote is that i really loooove the story for the undead campaign in Heroes of Might and Magic IV.

I actually thought Warcraft 3 had a great story for a RTS game, very nicely integrated into the gameplay.

the longest journey....hands down my most memorable gaming narrative. played it 7 years ago but still remember nearly all of it. unheard of for even the best books films and tv shows.
then its to the moon...
haven;t played dreamfall yet, with dramfall chapters out i should probably get started.

Silent Hill 2. The twist near the end blew my mind away, and overall it felt very Lynch-like. Normally I'm no big horror fan but I finished this game just tot see how the story ended.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.
