Posted: Tue, 19th Feb 2008 22:15 Post subject: Opinions about a new car ... |
|
 |
So the lease on my current car runs out at the end of this year. I'm not sure whether or not I want to buy it out (I will be way under in KM so it would be worth it in that sense) or just lease/buy something new for another 4 years.
In anycase, I am looking for something fairly similar, a hatchback ~20-25K including about $5K in options (automatic, AC, sunroof, good stereo, upgraded interior etc.). I don't want to get a "nicer" car that I can only afford the base model in.
So I'm really torn ... I'm not sure if I should keep my current car or get a new one.
My current car, 2004 Chevy Aveo LT
+ buyout is ~$6K (original price ~$18K, consider also the base model is ~$13K)
+ at the end of 4 year lease there should be only about 50-55K in KM on it (lease was for 80K)
- high interest rate in refinancing (maybe 5-7% compared to 0-1% for a new vehicle) meaning a higher monthly payment
- as the car ages it will no doubt start to have mechanical problems
2008 Saturn Astra XR (re-branded Opel Astra), new this year to Canada
MSRP is ~$23K
+ getting a 2008 model at the end of 2008 = big discount
2009 Toyota Matrix XRS (massive re-design for 2009, I don't want 2008 model)
MSRP is ~$26K
- similar in options to the saturn (this is the highest trim model)
So, any opinions? Any other suggestions for a good fairly compact car in this price range available in Canada that I might consider?

Keep the old one. Nothing in the other seems worthwhile (to me) to spend more cash.

Dude, for $23k you are considering a lousy Matrix? There are plenty of better cars in the price range. I'm not sure how much more expensive cars are there compared to here though.
Stay away from the Astra, why spend $23k on the refresh of the Matrix? Those are both extremely boring cars. Throw out some more options if you find any.
If I had $20k, and wanted to save some I'd buy a base model 08 Lancer, You can get a GTi for around $20k, and even a Civic Si (Coupe or 4 Door)
You look at Scion TC's? Or Mazda 3's? There are tons of competing cars in that price area but again I'm guessing up there they are 4000% more expensive.

Have you considered a VW? There are plenty of superb second hand Polo's for that price. And theyre amazing cars too.

I agree with this aswell.. Just be sure to consider Japanese cars, they ARE good, regardless of what two or three people will tell you.
I´d check into what a base Lancer would cost.. Also, do you have to buy the car brand new? I dunno how it works over there.. i´d consider buying a slightly used (but in great condition) car, with low mileage, since they drop a lot in price after the´re first purchased.

I guess I should say I've had used cars all my life ... I got really sick of dealing with them. Previous to this car I had a 93 Prelude that ending up dying and costing a while lot of money. After finally getting a new car, I decided that I would never go back to used. I don't have 'perfect' credit, which means that financing a used car privately is very expensive. Also for sure I plan on buying out whatever car I get at the end of the lease (or may finance). It's all about keeping a low monthly payment, I don't care so much if I end up paying a little more interest in the long run.
I should also say that I really, really, really, really, really would like it to have a sunroof. That is my favourite part of my car. Shit, even my prelude had one and I loved it in spite of the fact that it leaked all over me when it rained But this also means that in most cases I have to get the highest trim level to be able to have one...
so yeah, there are other cars that interest me...
2008 Mazda3 Sport GT ~25K
2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS w/ sun and sound package ~25K
and yeah, I guess there is always the civic but tbh it seems like everyone around here drives one of those...

Yeah both are very nice cars, I'd give the Mazda the nod though in interior quality and ride. My friend has a base Lancer GT non GTS and it's an overall great car. I think the Mazda3 comes with more standard features though, my friend opted out of cruise control and some other things with his Lancer.
And like everyone said, a used non abused car is just as good as a new one. Find one on the lot with low mileage that retains a bumper to bumper warranty and you're set all the while saving $10k.
Lol @ sunroof, most cars have them now so you should be safe haha. Maybe a TC is a good idea, has like a panoramic sunroof for the front and a seperate for the rear passengers. I personally hate them, more moving parts = more trouble, rattling, leaks, etc. Plus they reduce headroom and add weight, no thanks I'll stick my head out the driver side window like a dog instead.

maybe just because I love the new car smell? but naw seriously, leasing a new car with an reasonable monthly payment is not a big deal. Like I said, I'm not going to replace my current used car with another used car, so if I go that route I'll just keep what I have.

Oh, had no idea they didn't sell Scion's up there, I mean they are just Toyota's LoL. Check out the Mazda3, I think you'll like it. And given it's a hatchback it has more utility then the Lancer.

You should check into if you can use your unused KM to buy out the car. I had over 60000KM unused on my truck (I had a high mileage lease) but i could not use them towards the buyout price of the truck. I would have to get refunded, then buy my truck off the lot at there markup.
It turned out better for me that i justed used the unused KM towards a new truck.
I gave back my 2005 F150 extended cab, only the 4.6 L engine, crappy running boards, but fully loaded except leather.
And i got a 2008 Crew cab(Quite a bit more expensive) with the 5.6L (Big upgrade) , Heavy duty tow package with the best running boards (About 2-3K upgrade). So my new truck is probably over 10K more expensive ,and now i pay over $150 less a month.
Worked out great.

I am really happy to see that some of you guys like the new Lancer (as I worked on it )
But man, those cars listed in the poll are just not it Keep the old car or get a "ANY" German car, like a Audi A3 or even a VW Golf!. I am sure you can find them not that expensive used, even in Canada

I remember the terms if it was under in KM being something like I can either buyout the car (would be less than it's worth because of low KM) in which case I could re-sell it for a profit, or I could trade it in and get money towards a trade it. I guess in either case they win because I would remain driving a Chevy. Thing is, I don't want another one (no problem with chevy, they just don't have a model I like).
When I actually return the thing I guess I will find out all the details ... I would be happy if they would comprimise and offer to give me something for the KM (ie I buy it out and they buy it off me)...
oh and Cox, yeah these two cars are being heavily advertised on TV here at the moment so I guess that is why I was thinking either of those two. Now I think I'm leaning towards the mazda hatchback instead ... A3 even used is a little expensive...
