|

Quote: | IGN: There are a lot of RTS games being brought over to the console this year. Do you ever see the RTS being as big on the console as it is now on the PC?
Chris Taylor: Well one of the key things that is really affecting the economics and the success of gaming in general is piracy on the PC. So one of the reasons we'll see RTSs on the console is because people can't pirate it. That's why we're going to see a lot more of everything on the console. When you look at the sales of really hardcore games like Crysis and you think, "Wow, those games should have sold a lot more," you realize that's probably due in large part to piracy. And you realize that a game like Crysis would have done its true numbers if it had launched on console first.
It's just a good business decision to have your game of any kind on a console where you can't pirate it. When you start to refine the control system and you start to take away the barrier of the control system and you start to make that a non-issue, just like we did with first-person shooters, and it becomes more about the game experience and less about the interface, you start to go to the platform where the economics of where the gaming base is. |

i love how he thinks crysis would have sold better if it was released on console first ...

yeah lol, the 360 would have a hard time running crysis at high (not highest) settings ...
well, they probably would lock it at 30 fps w/o AA.

Both the Wii, Xbox 360 and now possibly the PS3 have been hacked, whats that idiot saying people don't pirate consoles games? Also allot more AAA console games are pirated big time, there just marketed and hyped more so they sell more also, and also all console games will run on X platform with pc you need to know about the specs so of course sales would be lower, more idiocy from idiot game devs

i still think its amusing how much they think piracy TRUELY effects sales.. its not THAT much.. they wont sell an extra million copies if the game wasnt able to be pirated or anything... if anything it might be a few thousand... take me for instance.. yeah i downloaded need for speed pro street... if i couldnt have downloaded it would i have bought it? fuck no.
games do better on consoles PURELY because its a larger market than pc gaming... most people these days cant be fucked (and dont even know HOW) to keep a pc running well, and dont (or cant) want to spend thousands on one, so they go to the console... easy and cheap to use... and yeah that makes sense. so yeah console games make way more money... why wouldnt they? theres like 1000x as many of them as their are us...
this guy is such a smackhead.

I have to say it's really disappointing to see the number of (established) developers turning their back on the PC right now - but it's even more upsetting when they are using piracy as their reasoning. We could all write for years on the subject of piracy (with any entertainment medium) and we'd still be nowhere nearer the truth.
...I guess it's just easier to blame piracy for chasing the dollar.

Problem is that to pirate a pc game is far easier than consoles. I don't think that people would buy every game that they pirate, far from that, but I think that piracy on pc is still going a bit too far. Every high school kid knows all about torrents and has connection high enough to download every game. Now, same kid doesn’t know a thing about how to mod a console, neither would he go and mess with It if he knew how.

I agree.
A stupid stupid comment on the "can't be pirated" bit.
I have Xbox, Xbox 360, PSP, PS 2, and a wii. Gues what Mr. Taylor? ALL of them are HACKED and I pirate the piss out of games for them.
Interstingly, one of the few games I actually bougth was Supreme Commander. Why? Multiplayer.
These idiots need to take a step back and look at companys like Stardock and Glactic Civilizations II and Sins Of The Solar Empire. I will quote an interesting thing from SOS's web page:
"I saw an article at IGN about how PC developers are blaming piracy as the reason some high profile games aren't selling in the quantities they should. As some of you know, Stardock's "main" business is in the PC software realm so we have a bit different outlook on market dynamics. Here's the deal: Piracy is a problem, no doubt about it. It does cost sales. But it isn't the driving reason for lost sales, it's the size of the market. Sins of a Solar Empire is outselling some higher profile games not just because it's a "great game" but because it runs on a vastly larger number of PCs.
For console advocates out there, ask yourself how well a given game would sell if it required players to run out and buy a $300 upgrade to their console to play the game? That's essentially what a lot of high profile PC game developers expect. When Ironclad and Stardock were working on Sins, we made a conscious decision that the game would not require potential gamers to upgrade their systems. That meant we couldn't have things like moving turrets or whatever but it means that the size of the market was much larger. No matter how good your game is, if people can't play it, you will always be limited. The number of people willing to upgrade PCs for games is not that large. If you want to sell lots of copies of your PC game, make sure it runs on a lot of machines."
Someone needs to take that, print it on a piece of paper, roll it up, and shove it up his ass.

You guys are so naive about what it is we are all doing here. It IS stealing, at least I've made peace with it. Most of you think of it as harmless when in reality it REALLY DOES effect the development side of things.
I really don't blame them, they can't beat the piracy community, so why try? They won't anymore.. its going to be harder and harder for us to get decent games on PC and its our own fault.
EDIT: For those of you who will say that it is possible to rip games for consoles aswell so my argument has no merit, well the ratio of people willing to risk their systems to install a chip or modded firmware to people willing to install a usenet program on their pc's really doesn't add up.

is it out fault? no its not.. people pirate shitloads of movies, but has it slowed down their releases? have they started pumping less money and time into them? fuck no, because they know that its a thriving market, piracy hasnt changed a damn thing there... the reason there are less and less games on the pc has NOTHING to do with piracy.. not a god damned thing.. its the fact that gaming has shifted to consoles because of their price and ease of use, thats ALL...
ask yourself this, if consoles were STILL selling like they do now, and NOONE pirated pc games... do you think gears of war would have been a pc first title? do you think most games would be made primarily for pc's then ported to consoles? no. not a chance. piracy does mean they make a TINY bit less money, but it has NOTHING to do with the decisions they make on whether or not (and to what degree) they support a given platform. piracy just ISNT that big of an issue to effect THAT kind of change.
all this being said, yes im comfortable being a criminal (cue rubbing of hands together and evil laughter) but lets be real... when pc games and console games cost as much as they do, dont tell me that they havent pushed us here atleast to SOME degree...

I will say one thing. With the lack of unique and interesting games lately.. only these "push out to make a quick buck shooters" the game developers are asking for it. Put some heart and soul into your games and they will sell.
I will say two things, actually.. the movie scene and the game scene are no where near in comparison. You can't restrict movies to certain people so they have no choice and have no defense against piracy. However game developers do, if we choose to pirate on PC's then they move the game to console where they sells are higher and a lot less people will pirate their games.

i disagree, the issue is about piracy effecting sales, and in that respect both mediums are the same.. games and movies, their respective 'makers' always bitch about loss of revenue, but as long as the market exists, no matter HOW bad piracy gets, they will continue as long as profits outweigh losses (which they ALWAYS will), so yeah.. games.. movies... they are the same... i brought it up purely to explain why piracy on the pc has nothing to do with games not being made as much for the platform... console gaming is the ONLY reason for it, because THAT is where the gaming market has gone.... NOT because people pirate pc games more than console games... thats just rediculous, console piracy is every bit as bad.. most likely even WORSE, than pc piracy...

This is such a naive statement. It's already been mentioned, it's far easier to pirate a PC game then it is a console game even if you just look at it from a financial point of view. You don't even need to burn a disk to play most pirated PC games.

Wake up and smell the coffee!
There's a grain of truth that piracy is killing PC games
Looked at back issues of PC Gamer and they use to have release dates every month for new games and alots of them
Then quarterly with even a smaller list
Now its practically sometime in 2008 and even smaller list
Between the consoles big money and piracy its killing us the PC users
I could spend $500.00 on a new 8800GTX and can't even play Crysis to the max
Wait thats a console plus games and money back
I'm glad I can do more than just play games on the PC

i cant believe you concider console piracy to be insignificant compared to pc piracy, when you have 10x the number of gamers and 10x as many games... unless you want to tell me there are equal numbers of pc and console gamers, and there are as many pc games as console games released every year...

you say piracy is killing pc games, and then immediately go on to talk about how consoles are cheaper than overpriced pc parts, and the big money is in consoles... which are pretty much THE reasons for why pc games are dying and has nothing to do with piracy? if your trying to make that point shouldnt you stick to it, not immediately say something that contradicts it?
