hehe you don't have to play final fantasy 1-7

every final fantasy game is standalone. they have their own story, characters, and world.

so to really know what's going on in this game, you'd only have to play final fantasy 7.
while it is pretty old (playstation 1 game), it's considered one of the best RPGs ever made by many many people.

so yeah, I suggest you try this game out (if you decide to get a psp), and maybe if you like it and it's characters, you can go and play final fantasy 7 afterwards.

i seriously doubt hes going to make it through ff7 if he plays it AFTER this game... the dialogue, the characters, i dont want to but i WILL mention it - the GRAPHICS, the gameplay... everything is much worse in ff7... square seems to have a real knack for making utterly shitty dialogue and irritating and unlikable characters - i mean seriously, who didnt cheer when that long haired girly man pig-stuck that annoying useless bitch in ff7... i felt so relieved when that happened... now if only we could get that yuffie chick gutted, we'd be getting somewhere!

anyway, yeah, play ff7 first before you play this, or dont bother at all... the story might be ok, but you really need to have a high threshold for suffering if you want to wade through all the annoying dialogue and characters to actually get to it.

i will say that so far i am enjoying crisis core though... characters are waaayyy less annoying so far, and the dialogue is definately miles above what youd usually expect from square, so definately play this game.

Finally! A reason to dust off the PSP after the very short God of War game.

This game works on 3.52M33-4, glad I don't have to update my psp to play this.

Your PSP gathered dust after you completed God of War? That cant have been that long ago lol Razz

he must live in a dusty house Very Happy

lol

Nah, I exaggerated. Razz

But my PSP did have a crap load of dust on it before God of War. It is dust free now, because of God of War and FFVII.

Sadly, I know once I am done with those games, dust will mount again. Sad

I am taking my time with these two games, I'm not going to rush through it. Smile

like i said, if you have a high threshold for suffering, then you probably ARE a hardcore rpg gamer, and should give ff7 a go.

im not saying rpg games suck, im not even really saying that ff7 sucks, its just that the story is pretty much always obscured by bad dialogue and horrible characters.

hahahhaha Very Happy seriously, felt vindicated when the bitch died, like all that suffering i put up with while playing it was amost worth it... cant think of a better end for a more deserving gaming character

FAIL, BITCH!

and why exactly are you spoiling one of the most important events of final fantasy 7 here?
what if someone hasn't play it yet and wants to play it? at least put that stuff in a spoiler tag.

Well, the game is 10 years old now. It would be like spoiling the ending of Sixth Sense. If you don't know it by now, it's your own fault...

The CSO works fine. Compressed the ISO to CSO with the highest setting, and runs without any problems. I think that was said on the first page already though Smile

Do I get this right: Leveling is completely random in this game?
You level up when the slots show 777. And there is no way to influence this.
So this means I could play the whole game and never actually get a level up if I'm unlucky?

pretty much.

but its not really that bad, im kinda getting used to the wheel shit... the only thing i dont like is that you cant use summons... theyre random just like the limit breaks.

either way i think the game is obviously set up in such a way that leveling will happen normally... perhaps leveling is a constantly changing probability... you might get lucky and level up a lot, or if you dont, the chances of leveling get progressively higher until its almost certain... id put money down on it being impossible NOT to level up many times during the game.

Yeah ok, I was exaggerating a bit there Laughing
But I just wanted to get it clear. It's a sure thing that you will level up, but I found it unsual to make it random. They could have made triggers at certain points in the game where you gain a level or so if they wanted to prevent people from collecting XP in battles...

yeah i agree, i dont like NOT having control over that kinda stuff... but at the same time, you do get that FUCK YEAH, JACKPOT!! feeling every time it spins up something good Wink

ive found that square LOVES to artifically make their games harder... so i think this is just another way of inflating the game through fake means to make it seem longer and more solid, because the game is restricting you from going hard out and just blasting your way through the game with skill... they throw in this random crap to kinda hold you back just like they do in all their games.

<rant>

just now (like 5 minutes ago, after a MONTH of on/off playing) i finished playing xenogears... wasnt my choice... i really didnt WANT too... i kinda 'had' too as a trade to get my (scum sucking mother fucking bastard of a) friend to play a game... holy shit i think it was the most horrible gaming experience of my entire life... just wow, it may seem like i dont like ff7 much, and i dont really, but playing xenogears made me appreciate final fantasy 7 so much more, because it was way better than xenogays... wow what an absolutely fucking horrible game. pretty good story, but the execution was so fucking pathetic, it makes a uwe boll movie look classy. my hat (if i wore one) goes off to anyone who can suck it up and manage to get all the way through xenogears, thats the truth. total honest respect for those people.

I doubt the EUR version will be smaller. Rather bigger if they include more languages but afaik there will be only the english version. With higher prices for Europe....

I do agree, a lot of the characters in Xenogears were slightly (ok very) OTT. Still, the story is possibly the best RPG story ever which in my eyes more than makes up for the games short comings in the character department. It just has so much more depth than other RPGs, I was gutted when I found out Xenosaga wouldn't be released in europe (although they seem to have released Xenosaga 2.. which is odd..)..

visually, awesome... the only complaint is the really dull unimaginative and poorly textured level design, but the enemies and the characters are brilliant. the cut scenes are also badassed and really well animated - both in-game and cgi.

combat is fun, tricky at first, but quite complex as you get into it. you need to juggle your items, your magic, your physical attacks, keep an eye on your health and magic and action points, you can NOT just stand there and hack away because youll lose every time... blocking, dodging, strategic positioning, figuring out which elemental attacks work for which enemies, picking the right materia (magic types) to bring into your battles, picking the right equipment to boost your stats...

the special moves (limit breaks, summons) are awesome to watch... summons have a really cool cgi sequence when initiated. its all luck based, so it'll happen randomly, but you definately get a FUCK YEAH feeling when you get lucky enough to activate one.

story is interesting, its definately keeping my attention, and i really want to see what happens next. characters arent annoying, unlike pretty much every other final fantasy game. dialogue is good and sometimes quite funny - voice acting is likewise, very good.

side missions are boring. there is a slight thrill to be had in talking to people around the city and managing to 'find' a new quest stream, but the quests themselves are pretty boring... only occasionally will you find anything good. the main quest is where the interest is, really.

speaking of side missions, i think this is where the game fails. i just dont have that much incentive to keep doing them, because the main downside of the game is that there just ISNT that much cool shit to get.. you DONT get to rummage around in the undergrowth by a tree and find some wicked ass materia.. you dont get to examine a book case and open a secret room... you DONT get to 'find' the 'awesome badass sword of death killing' in some secret room in a dungeon... well atleast SO far you dont get any of that stuff, and im about 50% of the way through the main game, 25% of my way through the ENTIRE game... you only have the sword that the game wants you to have.. everything you do is leveling up, and equipment to boost stats... the second part is normal i guess, but one thing i do like about rpgs is searching for cool ass weapons... if you can make em later in the game, then great, but at the moment, theres just no real excitement in side quests. the ONLY reason im doing them all is because im a compulsive completest, i want to try and finish all of them just so that i dont miss anything... but im surely not doing it because theyre fun.

so yeah

the good: character models, combat, visual design, cut-scenes, story, if your a gambler then the DMW, the constantly spinning wheel that randomly aligns to give you special temp abilities, level you or your magic up, or gives you epic kickass huge-damage-giving sequences. Music is great too. you can also avoid random battles if you want!

bad: game FEELS smaller and the side quests just feel like mini corridor sequences with no discoveries to be made and no real 'interest' or motivation to complete beyond the small hope youll get some good shit at the end. same can KINDA be said about the main game as well - the last level i did was the FIRST one ive come across where i actually found things 'hidden' in the environment, not just chest-based treasure. i STILL hate that fucking aerith chick.

btw, im not an rpg or final fantasy fanboy, im taking this as just a game and basing my comments on the games own merits.

some screenshots ive taken:
