So Rainbow 6 Las Vegas got 8.0 and this got 7.7. Am I wrong in thinking this game might actually be pretty decent ?

Just read a magazine review in Xbox World 360. Im bored and feel like typing a bit so here is the review word for word. It may contain spoilers.
Quote: | Fact: Dark Sector was the first ever next gen game officially announced, all the way back in 2004. It started life as a Splinter-Cell-in-space-style action game, but has now come back down to earth as more of a Resident Evil 4 clone. Sadly, though, to compare Dark Sector to either Ubisoft's slick stealth series, or Capcom's ground-breaking horror title is to flatter it far, far, too much. It may look a bleeding-edge game that rightly belongs amongst the Gears of Wars and the Call of Duty 4s of this world, but Dark Sector has its feet firmly in the last generation.
It follows a very simple formula: walk into an area, kill enemies, kill second or third wave of enemies, move to next area. Whereas games like CoD4 or Gears can get away with such repetitive last gen action by injecting it with incredible intensity and genuinely innovative new features, Dark Sector is left exposed as a painfully generic experience because it fails to do anything newer or faster than the last shooter you played.
The story is a confused mess of horror and bleak, cod-Cold War narrative. Playing as Hayden Tenno, a seriously dislikeable special-ops type, you're sent to a fictional former Russian state to eliminate a shady warlord called Mensik who's in possession of a bizarre biological weapon. After the prologue (which is, in an unusual touch, entirely black and white), you become infected by the virus, imbuing you with a boomerang-style blade weapon in your arm called a Glave. Yep: even for for a 360 FPS, this is complete nonsense.
In between confusing cut-scenes, the action is playable without being thrilling. You swap between the Glave and the shockingly slim selection of more conventional weapons, and maraud from A to B, slicing and shooting up Soviet soldiers and virus-infected zombies. As Hayden wears all black and spends most of the game in the shadows, we expected a little stealth action - but no matter how quietly you move around, there's no scope for undetected killing. So, with such a crippling lack of variety to the action, each level becomes a grind.
Yes, it feels great to slice the head off a zombie with a well-aimed lob of the Glave, but no, you won't still be amused by about level three when you're circle-strafing for five minutes trying to fend off a seemingly endless wave of enemies. And why, oh why, with such a variety of colours available to them did the developer decide to make everything in the game either grey or out-and-out black> Sure, it's a horror game, but there's nothing remotely thrilling about scrabbling around in the pitch dark trying to work out where the enemy is that's trying to bludgeon you to death.
You want another niggling problem? Try the combat. It's just a little to twitchy and a little too unrefined to be enjoyable. Other shooters have done it louder and better before - and they don't look as grey.
We've stuck the boot in, right? Right. But there are one or two great moments that are worth slogging through the stages to see. One's the battle with the game's first real boss - a skinless King Kong-flavoured abomination - which sees you both smashing up the insides of an old church. The screen comes so alive with fire, masonry and horror, the next time you're thrust into the depressingly grey streets of the next level, it feels like a huge comedown.
As a break from the action, you'll have to work out the odd puzzle or two, but these are seldom taxing. Most of the time, all you're called on to do is imbue the Glave with either fire, electricity or ice, then burn, shock or freeze something with it. Thanks to the game's extreme linearity, the solution is usually immediately obvious, and there's never a sense of achievement at having licked a tricky part of the level.
So, in almost every regard this game is a disappointment. Even a competent multiplayer mode can't tempt us to recommend Dark Sector as anything other than a slice of history. It may well have been the first next gen game announced, but it certainly hasn't been worth the wait.
+ Plenty of blood
- Far too dark
- Horribly linear
65 out of 100. |

Def a C average/70% scoring game. Graphics and special effects are awesome, even awe-inspiring at times. But 90% of the gameplay has been done before and Much better in other games. It is kinda pathetic how much they rip GoW off with the combat controls and even don't get it quite right. Worth blowing a few hrs on and def worth the burn but no way is this worth a buy.
And hopefully the story gets better later on. Right now it's like WTF is going on... But with such an average game I don't expect it to turn out very spectacular or even make much sense if I do complete it.
So yeah, average run-of-the-mill action game so far.

Evil_mushroom, I think you need to relax dude. The game will be out in due time, not like it's not getting a release. Just be patience and wait, there's heap of other games to play.
