Well if you download Doom 3 and patch it the CD-check will be gone but when you start the game and try to play it will be closed down with an error message about Key... That's why a lot of people probably cares. It is still a protection that you need to circumvent in order to play a pirated copy of the game.

Oh, and silly me thought this thread was about devs that respect paying customers by remove invasive CP, not about pirates' ease of use. Rolling Eyes

I got that feeling from:

developers that remove the copy protection from their games after a while with a patch or update. This way they can be saluted because they think about their end users.

And why you quote yourself? Laughing

I'm surprised no one mentioned Stardock yet. None of their games have any protection what so ever and the best part is, their games are fuckin awesome! Very Happy

@ BaronOfHell

They were shipped with no protection, this thread is for games that had their protection removed with a patch. There are far too many games that have shipped with no copy-protection whatsoever.

Maybe this topic should be sticky.

Btw, I wonder if Cossacks 2 Gold has 1.2 patch included and Starforce removed.

Regarding CoD4: multilayer exe never had a protection so there was nothing to remove, and single player exe is still protected.

Yeah but they have one of most retarded policies regarding patches to compensate that. Patches can only be downloaded through Stardock Central and require valid cd-key to download them and use them(online activation at game launch).

So copy protection is not part of retail versions of their games but activation is part of any patched versions. One can say they're sole winners in "game copy protection added by later patches" category Very Happy

It's in fact worse than Steam. Steam is very widespread, popular no-steam unpacked gcf releases usually get patches from their respective release teams, it's even much easier/better than that with original gcf releases.

But Stardock games interest few ppl, so for example try to patch Galciv 2 gold(original + dark avatars, released by Overdue) to latest version.

To prove that point about low interest : Dark Avatars addon hasn't ever been released on the net separately, only as part of Galciv 2 Gold. But as far as i know it was officially released separately.
People who already had original Galciv 2 by that time had wasted their bandwidth re-dling it as part of gold release.

Some early Galciv 2 patches had official standalone releases/no stardock central, but they never released later ones as standalones.

Not that it would be problem had there been enough interested people. E.g. someone with ability to compare patched and unpatched versions of game and rar up changed files or create binary-difference patches in case big resource files get changed. And kill activation check ofcourse(extremely easy since they don't use any protectors or packers or any integrity checks).

UFO: Afterlight

Patch 1.6

Quote:
This patch includes lots of bug-fixes that fans of the game wished for, and removes the copy-protection! That’s right; developer ALTAR and publisher 1C Company have agreed to remove the DVD check from the retail version of the game! You can read more about the updates to the game in the official forum.
