I'm rocking ubuntu. I just run a command in terminal to burn it. So easy.
growisofs -use-the-force-luke=dao -use-the-force-luke=break:1913760 -dvd-compat -speed=2 -Z /dev/cdrom=gtaiv.iso
for some reason it calls my lg dual layer burner cdrom
not sure why
everyone should install ubuntu or some other linux distro.

Someone said the Monks are back in this one. Has that been confirmed to be true? Cause man if it is I'm going to start a Crusade against them!

Do I need to change any of the settings (e.g. layer break, book type)?

shouldn't have to as long as you are using +DL's.
if you wanted to be fancy you could change the write mode from auto to dvd in case of some bitsetting problem or some such mess i read about. if you don't plan on trying it online just burn the hell out of it and dont worry about that stuff.

Guys quick question, I want to get my 360 modded today for gta4 ( im still buying it ). I found someone in my area who does it for $60 and takes around 30 minutes to do.
I asked this person, if there is any modchip installation, and she said no there isnt, it is just a firmware downgrade that allows you to play backups.
Now my question, is this person full of shit? Can a simple firmware downgrade/upgrade allow me to play backedup games and regular games, as well as useing xbox live, or will i need an actual modchip to run backups?

yup it's pretty much that simple as long as you have a box with a samsung or a hitachi drive. if you aren't scared of getting your hands dirty and little cut up and have a hitachi i would recommend doing it yourself. the samsung drives can get a little complicated but to me it didn't get any easier than doing a hitachi drive.
if you're new to it though i would definitely read up on playing back ups on live. as far as anyone can tell no one has been banned just for having modded firmware but no one knows that for 100% sure either. you will more than likely eventually get banned for playing back ups on live due to the cat and mouse game that goes on between the dudes that made the firmware and microsoft. supposedly there are a few methods for making proper back ups but when you cut all the shit and arguments it's pretty much speculation.
i've got one box that was banned (guitar hero 3 did it) and 2 others that aren't. all 3 have been modded and the last 2 i have i play back ups on but leave the network cable unplugged.

there are some cheap mofos on nforce. I did my 360 myself but 60 bucks doesn't sound bad to mod an xbox for someone you don't even know. I mean wtf. How is that a ripoff? It wouldn't be worth my time if someone asked me to do it for them for less than that. You have to take apart the case, take apart your pc case, hook everything up make the firmware do the install, its a pain in the ass. I dunno 60 bucks seems reasonable to me if you don't know how to do it yourself.

Sixty bucks is definitely fair for someone with the knowledge and the hardware to do it and to take the time out of his/her day to do it. I would get it done. I think you have to have a specific DL burner to burn backups. Luckily LG has a really common and cheap drive that works just great. Getting the Sata card was a total workout for me though. Online was all sold out. Went to 5 different local store before I found the right card.
If the person was your friend I'd say the price should be free.

pretty sure any type of DL burner will work. if you're trying to make your own back ups they recommend using a particular samsung model with a kreon firmware on it.

Those verbatim discs are awesome. I just got my first spindle. I always knew they were the best but there were no deals around here. The games that I've have burned so far are working better than originals. Can't stress enough how verbatim has to be the media.\
Only 22 more files now!

Anyone know where to go online (US) to get some good deals on DVD+R DL Media...?
I'm in need of some but all the local shops in town don't have any sales going this week for DL
Media.
Topic: I was nice and modded my friends 360s for free. I was lucky they all had Sammy Drives.
I have never done a Hitachi but I bought an Elite with a BenQ and swapped it out with my Sammy from my old prem system. Works well so far.

I use www.allmediaoutlet.com for most of my media needs, but for brand name like Verbatim, you might be better off going to an outlet store.

I find that its often not the media, but the burner that is the problem.

I have used memorex, fuji, and phillips media and they're all bad. I still haven't finished acreed because of that. You can hear it when my drive crashes to a screaming halt using those discs. It's like the 360 can no longer read anything and brings the disc to a grinding halt. it's really loud and surprised alot of people I've had over. This even happens some times on original media. Both games I've burned on Verbatims however have never done this.
I don't use a usenet service that much. I would use giga if I was to start again. I was using easynews but their retention isn't as good. Right now all I've been doing is using my ISP's server. It only has 3 day retention but if you stay on top of things, that'll do fine. What's your ISP offer?

I don't know if they ship to the us but futureshop.com had a sale on 20 verbs for 25 bucks. That's where I got mine. Maybe Bestbuy offers the same deal. Same company.

Giganews is what I use.
I've been on for years and never had a problem. The retention is long (200 Days) so if you miss something you can go back a long way.
They also offer a SSL connection for your account which is a plus.

if you know what par files are then you should be able to answer your own question....You don't need the pars if the original iso/rars are all intact and corruption free...

alright guys, thanks for all the responses about modding my 360, I will be doing it tonight.
One more question, is it possible to reverse the mod so I can go back to just having a regular 360, or is it pretty much a one way ticket?
