Guess you all read the IGN review, but here goes:
10/10
Closing Comments
Grand Theft Auto III was a revolutionary title, one that inspired a whole new generation of 3D action games. Grand Theft Auto IV is just as big a leap forward, though perhaps in subtler ways, and sets a new benchmark for open-world games. Everything in GTA IV works in harmony. The story would be nothing without the city; the city gains realism from the physics engine; the physics compliment the improved AI; the AI would make no sense without the new cover system. And on and on. There is no one major weak aspect.
10 Presentation
The story is Oscar quality. The use of the phone as a gaming portal is genius. There's really nothing more that could be asked for from GTA IV.
10 Graphics
The level of detail is astounding. Liberty City feels alive and lived in. While there are some technical issues, the artistic merits push the score to the max. A true marvel.
10 Sound
The dialogue makes the story. Without the excellent writing and the stellar voice acting, the story would fail. And the soundtrack kills -- more than 200 songs and almost all are great choices.
10 Gameplay
The cover and targeting system work great. Blind firing with an RPG is a thing of beauty. Everything works in harmony and not a single one of the missions is bad. The most fun I've had in years.
10 Lasting Appeal
The story will take anywhere from 25-45 hours to complete, depending on your skill level and attention span. There's plenty more to do once you finish the story, such as excellent multiplayer.
10
Masterful OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Rofl, how can it get a 10/10 in the graphical dep if it has technical issues? That's just retarded, don't get me wrong though, I'm not surprised considering IGN, but lol.
At least be a man enough to give it a 9/10 if it's not perfect. lol
I think 10/10 scores are total bullshit all together, nothing can be perfect. This game pwns and is a definite 9/10 for me but it aint perfect, not with the rare stuttering and the good old pop out stuff (cars being gone when you look away for just a few seconds), nothing's perfect. Fucking retarded IGN... |
Technical issues are not the graphics you retard. The game deserves a 10/10 so other devs can put there head out of there ass. And than we might see other quality games that are worth your 60dollars/euros whatever.

Yes it is, even though I wish sometimes they would focus more on the artistic valuation (like they actually seemed to do this time on IGN!?).

10/10 my arsehole
It is a good game for sure. I see lots of little bugs here and there, pop ups disappearing cars. The animation is good but not great, the people in the street whilst better than previous do not move naturally (Assasins Creed did that better). I would have liked to have seen a better more solid feeling movement mechanic, something akin to GRAW or GOW instead of the wild swinging camera. The graphics are good and it's a pretty good looking world but look at burnout paradise (that for me looks better, imagine walking around Paradise city instead of Liberty).
The story is quality mind you. I'm looking forward to seeing how multi pans out too.
9/10
oh yeah and what's with the cardboard doors? that's a point off right there, lazy that
8/10
No advertising.

yea the doors are a bit of a joke - how can they just have them like 'cardboard' as the earlier poster said - 10/10 for graphics is not right. 9 is better. this is not COD4 level of graphics...by a long way.
and crackdown did the explosions a hell of a lot better.
and the camera lol
still a fucking great game of course, but its not top of the pile in every aspect.

exactly, IMO. IGN article is an opinion, just like you have one, they have it too. They think it deserves a 10, and you dont have to agree with them. They say its not perfect, but they had so much fun playing it, that fun value overshadows all the little problems by a mile. And there is no way they can have cod4 looking game with the massive size of the city on the current gen consoles. The graphics might not be the best out there, but for a game this size its very good, and the detail in somethings is just impressive, so they judge it accordingly. So far absolutely no stattering or lag for me, i experienced texture/objects pop up, but no game breaking stuff (like cars spawning right infront of you ala SA and SR), usually its along the road and small stuff like shopping cars and bushes. Again its just an opinion of "one" man, i for example thought halo 3 did not deserve anything over 7, but they certainly do not agree with me.

lol i definitely agree with you on halo 3, i would have to have been in a well generous mood to even give THAT game a 7

man...someone just ban timechange01 or just do something about that sig...it just hurts my eyes...pls
ps: great game, can't wait to buy it
oh... and i really think it deserves such a high rating. About the technical issues you people talked about, ign states that :
Quote: | Sure, there are framerate hitches here and there and (particularly on 360) there is some texture pop-in, but it actually runs better than I expected. |
Quote: | For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster |

What, you are some kind of hardware authority now?
Do you have any insight in the gfx-engine being used? - no
Do you have any insight in how euphoria is used? - no
Do you have any insight in how developers use ps3 vs 360? - no
Do you have any insight in gaming coding at all? - no
If any of these are wrong, I´ll stand corrected. |
On the pure technical side the Xbox GPU is superior to the PS3 GPU just like the PS3 CPU is superior to the Xbox CPU. But that doesn't mean shit really, both consoles will generally look the same.
And I agree with the 10/10 rating for the graphics. They're not rating the graphics only (bump mapping, AA, AF etc etc.), it's about the level of detail. There's so much going on, the occasional popup and such is understandable and forgetable.

One thing: The cover system, and the auto-aim. Anyone who says it works perfectly, must be stupid.
Niko sometimes takes cover behind something thats more far away than the object i want to take cover behind, wich in intense firefights can be deadly. The auto-aim often snaps to people behind cover, rather than some uncovered dude that I WANTED to aim on. I swear alot when there's big shootouts going on, and thats not a good sign. But then again, i think ive only died once in one of those big shooting scenes, so i guess its not all bad.
But the cover system is clumsy, far from perfect.
And to you people who have tried multiplayer
How is the character creation feature? Is it very limited?
Watercooled 5950X | AORUS Master X570 | Asus RTX 3090 TUF Gaming OC | 64Gb RAM | 1Tb 970 Evo Plus + 2Tb 660p | etc etc

this game is 10/10. those people quoting technical issues clearly have no idea what they are playing. to acheive such detail on a grand scale and have it playable is no mean feat. this is what other developers should aspire to, this is truly the biggest step forward in any genre in a long time. [not technically but as a game as a whole]
look at saints row 1 is just a carbon copy and this is a real effort to push forward.

IGN is bullshitting, a 10/10 rating on any game means the game is 100%, the game is perfect. It by no means is perfect, and it doesn't matter how they write it up, that won't change a thing, if you rate something as 10/10, it can't have a flaw, that's why 10/10 scores shouldn't exist. It doesn't matter what IGN says, you can't rate something as 10/10 if it's not 10/10, overshadowing a flaw? Come on, if there is a flaw, how can it be 10/10? Even if you shove it under the carpet, it'll still be there.
Wait WHAT? did something hit your head whilst you were sleeping last night, you chose to ignore IGN's scoring criteria and the impose your own meaning of their score onto them. go see the doctor or setup your own gaming review site and never give a game 10/10

Need help!
Spoiler: |
I'm on the mission where i have to snipe 3 guys with playboy, i snipe them then i go down to the construction yard but it is impossible to see where my other targets are. And if i move out to much and the other italian guys spot me i pretty much get owned by them.
So how is the easiest way to like finish this mission?

i did it like this
Spoiler: | snipe the 3 guys first, then do not go down yet, but snipe the guys on the ground with a gun first.
Then go down, grab the car and drive into the construction yard(but still be careful because there are still lots of idiots there).
There are 2 options then, stay down and take care of the guys visible on the ground, which is also one of the target.
Or go up on the first crane and snipe some more(you can snipe 2 target this way, the one on the ground and the one which is on a higher platform).
then get down and move on to the next target, gets easier there though still be careful not to get shot in the back or overrun if they spot you to soon. |
used the spoiler tag since, i guess some rather not see it.
