I've got a 1994 honda accord LX
with my car fully warmed up, when I sit idle for about 5-10 min and give it some gas sometimes it will start spitting and sputtering and die. I have to restart it and put the pedal to the metal and pop it in gear, peel out and drive like mad while the RPM is going crazy, and the spitting and sputtering will eventually go away if I keep hauling ass and not stopping.

It's fucking crazy because it only does this every now and then... I dont know what the fuck is the problem, I've done a full tuneup (oil, oil filter, plugs, plug wires, pcv valve, fuel filter, air filter).

this past week I've noticed a new noise, my resonator and muffler were rusted to hell, and had some small holes and I when I give it gas I hear the noise coming out of the resonator.

So I took it to this shop thinking it was my catalytic converter. I explained to the muffler guy how it has shitty gas mileage, stalls sometimes while idling or during take off after idling. He puts it on the rack and shows me the rusted muffler and holes in resonator and says I need new pipes.

So I pay him $175 for new piping, new resonator and new muffler, he says my converter is fine.

I don't know shit about exhaust systems, will this fix this problem or did I just waste money?

My first thought is the O2 sensor. If your pipes were that rusty, the O2 sensor is probably gone bad.

The sensor is located on the exhaust pipe were it connects to the manifold.

I tested the map sensor, oxygen sensor and when I went to start testing the intake air temp sensor I noticed a dam vacuum hose or something was unplugged, I plugged it in and wallah my idle is a lot smoother, car runs better, starts when its hot and doesnt stall when sitting idle anymore.

I guess the new pipes was needed anyhow, when I drive through town and get out of my car i would be dizzy, and while driving on the highways my eyes would get real heavy, I guess I was sucking in some carbon monoxide, so the new pipes wasn't a waste, especially when I have my 3 year old riding in my car with me.
