You just get random discoveries every now and then depending on how much you invest. So it's possible that you can research alternate fuels.
But as for what i'm going to do when i get the game: I'll play as the smallest country possible, and build my economy, then when i'm rich enough, i'll annex one of my neighbours to quickly get my population up, then keep going like that until i'm a collossal superpower. Then i'll secretly develop biological weapons, which i will then "test" on the U.S. Then, i'll conquer and annex those pathetic pigs. Then i'll ban all religions and force those fools to accept my very own brand of socialism. |
Are you hiring?

You can't play as any of the microstates. You can only play as countries that have at least a few hundred thousand people. I think the smallest i've seen in the French version is Bahamas.
Gigabyte S-Series GA-G33-DS3R, Intel C2D Quad Q6600 OC @ 3.2Ghz, 4gb Kingston PC8500 1066Mhz DDR2, Geforce 7800GTX (will get a 9800GTX when they are released), 2 x 250Gb HD's and a case with built in paper and lotion dispenser.

Well, superpower 2 let you play as all the microstates, even the vatican which only has 500 people. SO i think it kinda sucks that you can't do it in this game. It would be fun to play as Nauru (12,000 people) andtake over the whole pacific and create a pacific empire, then move on the big players like China/Japan/U.S. So i hope you can somehow mod the game to play the really small countries, because that'd be more fun than playing for example China which would be way too easy.

Yeah, hopefully they'll do some patches that include these countries but then again, it would probably take a decade for the devs to release one patch.
Anyway, how is the spanish version, is it bugged as the french or is it improved?

Does this game have a realistic government system for each nation as well?
For example the United States president has to get a thumbs up from congress to start a war. In nations with such a structure of government are they restricted to such in the game?
I hope so because that would be realistic.

There's a parliament in every country, and depending on how much power they have they can approve or disapprove of different measures that you try to take. For example, in a democratic government, everything you try to do has to be approved by parliament first. So the more seats your party has in parliament the easier it is to pass different measures. You can also blackmail politicians of opposition parties to make them vote in favour of your policies. Or you can simply disband the parliament which gives you total control to do what you want. But it will be extremely unpopular and you'll most likely have a revolution on your hands unless you take some other steps first. For example, taking state control of all the media and forcing them to feed the population nothing but pro government propaganda helps if you want to disband parliament, since they won't report it which will minimize the negative effects of doing it. You can also force schools to indoctrinate their students into loving the government. However, doing stuff like this will lower your relations with the international community, and make it harder to obtain loans and aid from the world bank and IMF, since they only give money to demopcratic governments. So it's much harder to get loans to develop your economy when you're a dictatorship. So your best bet is probably to democratise your country at first so you can get some nice loans to build that huge ass hydro dam you've had your eye on, and then once you're rich enough, you turn it back into a dictatorship. That's what i'm gonna do

Well, i'm not 100% sure on all those points i made. I do know you can change how much power the parliament has, which determines how easy it is to implement your policies. IF you disband parliament you'll have full control to do what you want. But since i don't understand too much French (i bought the French version when it came out since i wanted to play it ASAP, which was a big mistake ) i'm not so sure about the IMF and world bank. I remember playing as Saudi arabia and i tried to build a nuclear reactor for €20 billion. But since i didn't have enough money i had to apply for a loan at the world bank. And they said some shit about human rights and democracy, so i assume they refused to give me the money unless i gave my people more freedoms and stuff. I also seem to remember being able to get the loan some other way since i was able to begin construction of the reactor. Don't remember how though. And i'm not really sure if taking control of the media helps when you want to disband parliament, but i assume it does. I knwo you can take complete control of the media and schools and force them to become government propaganda tools, but i'm not sure if it actually affects anything since i haven't been able to test it since the game is in French and i don't understand shit. I'll play the game now for a bit as Saudi Arabia and see how the whole loan thing works. BRB.

Well i just played as Saudi Arabia and applied for loans from the world bank and IMF and as far as i could tell they were accepted. Maybe i just dreamed the whole thing about them not granting loans to dictatorships. But at least i'm 100% sure on everything else about parliament and stuff. I've played as both countries that don't have a parliament and countries that do. In the ones that do, parliament has to vote for almost everything you do, while in those that don't you can do whatever you want without any votes. I also tried disbanding parliament as Sweden once, and i had massive protests in every city. So i tried to order my airforce to bomb the protesters, but my defence minister said he refused to bomb his own countrymen. Fucking traitor...
And i'm also sure about the media and school indoctrination. You can do those things, i've tried it myself. I just don't know what their effects (if any) are, except that doing it lowers your popularity. I guess it has to be good for something though, otherwise they wouldn't add it. But then again, the French version is still bugged as fuck, even with the latest patch. From what i've read on forums, only the versions that were released recently (Spanish and Russian) work relatively well and are pretty bug free. So i guess we'll have to wait for the English version to get the whole bug free experience
