they said (for Cro) :
Current education spending (% of GDP)
4.5%
Primary school enrolment ratio (% Net)
87%
Secondary school enrolment ratio (% Net)
85% (!!)
Higher education enrolment (% Gross)
41.8%(!!!)
Secondary school has become mandatory since this year, and by our calculations we have about 14% of higher educated people in country... I think that the numbers don't add up...

Finland at #8... *shrug*

Has there been any talk in the swedish media about joining NATO, btw? In finnish press it's been mentioned a few times lately again, like how we should join NATO in the near future together with Sweden, lower score might have something to do with that?

Looks like Wikipedia mentions it as well (for what it's worth, heh):

Other potential candidate countries include, in South-eastern Europe, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montengro. Other possible, long neutral countries that might become members are Finland and Sweden.

they scored the lowest (low = good) on murder rate and second lowest on violent crime. also they tend to have less arms sales and military expenditures.

also if the rest of you care for some background (and criticism) ..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Peace_Index

one criticism is :
Quote:
according to The Economist, the weighting of military expenditure "may seem to give heart to freeloaders: countries that enjoy peace precisely because others (often the USA) care for their defense." The true utility of the index may lie not in its specific rankings of countries now, but in how those rankings change over time, thus tracking when and how countries become more or less peaceful

Lets face it if wars stopped the military would be out of a job. That is unless the military got a grip & started acting as a strong arm for the public (rescue, relief, emergency) rather than the corporations (arms, oil, resource control). It sickens me that the coast guard have to fund themselves, talk about priorities totally out of whack militarily Sad

mostly arms sales, # of people in jail, respect for human rights, military expenditure, and military sophistication.

I wonder, am I the only one actually looking at the country level details? Surprised

I don't quite see why they place UN deployments in militarisation. Shouldn't participation in peacekeeping missions win goodwill for the participating countries.

And ironic that Denmark ended on 2nd place in a year marked by anti-Denmark protests. Not complaining about their position (not a beauty contest Very Happy) just about the fact that nothing in those criteria captures a country's (that is not openly at war) relation with non-neighbouring nations and its international standing.

^^ I think that it is actually a positive thing, since USA scores a perfect (bad) 5. More % of your military participating in UN missions = better score.
