So I finally got a heatgun today. Took less than 10 minutes to fix my 'no picture' problem. After everything was cooled, the thermal paste kept acting weird while I was putting it on the chips. But no worries let the funtimes begin!!!

I bought it on release day so it has been running for a loooong time, ive spent man many hours playing it. Yesterday i removed the xclamps and put new thermal paste on the chips. Works a treat
Now im prepared for GTA IV |
Question. Why didnt you just send it back to microshit and get a new one for free?
Or was it modded and thus void of warranty?

Fixing it yourself is so much cooler and faster. My xbox360 is like my baby. I love my console. I remember the day I brought it home in July of 2006. I wouldn't send it to some stranger. Plus youl have to wait a few days for MS to send you back the console. You can totally fix any of these problems in under 20 to 30 minutes by yourself. And you also get a sense of accomplishment! lol

Three reasons really...
1. I modded it on day one when the first hitachi firmware was out, to get it to mode b and flashable i had to do the "wire trick", there was no linux mode b disc at this time. So i cut up the powersupply cable to the drive. I also rushed the disassembly of the box so its easy to spot that its been tampered with (both case and inside).
2. If they would send me a new 360 under warranty even though i did open it, i would probably get a 79 drive in my new (I have modded 3 of my friends drives, they all had rrod and got a new one under warranty and all had 79 drives in). That would mean i have to solder a chip on the drive to flash it.
3. Most importantly, i saw this as a challenge to repair pretty high tech hardware with lowtech household tools and supplies. I get a warm fuzzy feeling when i now play GTA IV on my 360 that wouldnt boot a week ago
As a funny sidenote i first fixed my rrod by applying pressure on the mem chips, since i had no rubber erasers or other fitting materials at home i cut out some pieces of rubber sole from some old shoes and used that. Imagine my suprise when it worked hehe
That fix didnt last long though... |
lol nice.
well, your obviously more tech inclined then i am. I couldnt repair a 360 or ps3 or anything

Guys, are the newer 65nm 360s overheating as well? I'm reading in a lot of places that they are very cool and I shouldn't really be afraid, but you know.
And for those that want to say send to MS, well no sending to MS because I live in a country where it's not officially sold.

I can't believe that you can fix a 360 but don't realize not to wash a laptop with soap and water...

Replace thermal paste. Either the thermal paste was too little and is now worn out OR you accidentally dropped your console causing one of the heatsink screws to be moved.
And tihkal, there are some things that I learn after trial and error lol now I know not to wash laptops with water

GTA IV's been causing my patched up box some problems. I was lucky if I could reach a save point.
Thankfully I had the ingenious idea of sticking a proper big house fan in front of the 360 and so far no problems.

You do realise that MS doesn't fix their own machines don't you. They use small independent companies and they're leaving in droves because the machines fixes are generally temporary.

Yeah but those are reconditioned machines.
Quote: | The failure rate on Microsoft's Xbox 360 games console is now so great that some UK-based repair centres are refusing to fix the device.
For many months, owners have complained of the so-called 'Red Ring of Death' syndrome, named after the blinking red lights on the front of the console when it has failed due to overheating.
The problem has now become so widespread, however, that some centres are turning customers away because they have become deluged and, they say, there's little they can do to fix the machines.
Microsoft's own repair centre in Havant, Hampshire - one of the few remaining places where customers can send the devices - is now so swamped with returns that it is reportedly sending them to repair centres in Prague to get fixed.
Micromart, an established game console repairer in Northumberland, is now turning away 30 machines a week with 'Red Ring' because its fix for the problem wasn't satisfactory.
"It's a motherboard problem," Geoff Croft, a support representative at Micromart, said. "There's a lot of components soldered onto it, and because of the overheating, there's faulty contact between the parts and the motherboard."
Diarmid Andrews, a director at GT Electronics, a Dundee-based repairer which is still offering to fix the machines despite having only a 70 per cent success rate, said: "It's a big, big issue. My estimate is that about a quarter to a third of units are experiencing this problem."
Mr Andrews said his company was now getting more than 100 Xboxes with 'Red Ring' a week, and had taken on 3 extra staff to cope with demand.
Microsoft refused to confirm reports that it was sending machines to Prague to cope with the volume of returns, but a support worker on the company's Xbox 360 helpline appeared to say that some machines were sent there, before saying he was not at liberty to disclose such information.
A report on 360 gamer, an online magazine, said that one customer, having waited weeks for his machine to be returned, rang Microsoft's customer support line, only to be told that it was still in the Czech Republic.
Microsoft said in a statement: "There is no single root cause or systemic issue with any of the Xbox 360 consoles. With such a complex consumer electronic product that contains more than 1700 different components, there are obviously many things that can malfunction at any given time."
Microsoft has sold about 1.3 million Xboxes in the UK since the device was released at the end of 2005, according to Screen Digest.
The increased failure rate in recent months had come to light because the warranty period on machines bought soon after release had just expired, experts said.
Simon Brew, managing editor at Micro Mart, a weekly technology magazine, said: "Red Ring certainly is a problem. The bigger issue, though, is how quickly you can turn around repairs, though."
Nick Parker, an analyst with Screen Digest, said he thought the estimates of returns were "inflated", but agreed that even if the volume of repairs was that large, the "bigger question" for Microsoft was the turnaround time. "If it's taking you 2-3 weeks to get an Xbox back to a customer, that is a problem," he said.

Alright well did a little more researching today and apparently the southbridge chip is the one with the circular silver sticker on it. Now error code 0021 either means:
1. The DVD Drive has been flashed incorrectly (which is obviously not the case if your drive has been working fine). This should only occur immediately after flashing the drive.
OR
2. There is a problem with your southbridge chipset.
To correct this southbridge chipset problem you have 2 options which are:
Option 1: Reball (Not possible using conventional tools)
Option 2: Reflow
I will be trying option 2 first using my heatgun. If anybody here needs instructions on how to safely do a reflow, here is a great tutorial:

Successfully fixed error code 0021
But it was definitely no walk in the park. Im sweating and fucking exhausted!! Wrapping the motherboard with plastic foil and then with aluminum foil feels like youre working on a damn art project. But for those who really wanna fix error code 0021 themselves, use the tutorial link above to properly wrap your motherboard and then heatgun the highlighted area in the picture below for exactly 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
If you got 3RROD, just send it back to Microsoft because doing a proper reflow takes about 2 or 3 hours of intense concentration and precision. Wrapping the motherboard properly is pretty much the most difficult thing I ever had to do for this thing. Not only that but after your heating session is over and you let the motherboard cool for about an hour, you notice that much of the plastic is melted and tape residue remains on the motherboard.
But dont wory none of the plastic actually melts ONTO the motherboard. It comes off very easily. However, the tape residue does NOT come off easily. Im researching on how to remove the tape residue safely and if leaving it there can cause any long term effects. But other than the tape residue, everything seems perfectly fine.
I hope I dont have to do this for a long time. But at least its working good now

Shit got 3rrod again. I don't care how many times I get 3rrod, it isn't going to defeat me. Anyways it currently has error code 0102.
Quote: | 0102: Error in the "Digital Backbone" (CPU/GPU/RAM), this is usually caused by a cold solder joint between the GPU and the mainboard. |
Two fixing methods for this error:
Option 1: "X-clamp fix" which basically means replace thermal paste and play with heatsink tightness.
Option 2: Reflow all four chips (CPU, GPU, ANA, Southbridge)
I tried option 1 first obviously but it didnt do anything. Will try option 2 tomorrow.

Successfully fixed error code 0102
This time I decided not to use plastic foil since it just melts and the tape pretty much gets vaporized. Using a thicker layer of aluminum foil seems to get the job done nicely. The caps are completely flat so theres no heat damage.
Heated all 4 chips with heatgun on LOW setting for exactly 3 minutes. I let it cool for 30 minutes and everything is up and running again
