Well, it doesn't really. They are different sorts of games. RO even has a tank simulation in it which if you find the right maps can really come alive (I prefer this mode - it's amazing). The infantry combat is more like World War 2 online if you've ever played it - which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just not the sort of action that DOD provided.

Good game. I recently forced two of my friends to buy it since it dropped to $5. Never played the original DoD but if its anything like DoDS, RO is very different. Even infantry combat feels more like insurgency than DoD. Some times you wont even know what hit you (just like in real life i think).

I'm currently playing Darkest Hour mod beta 1.0, which involves battles in Normandy. Although they have some bugs with american maps (it's a beta!), the action is fantastic and the problems will be sorted out soon. New maps, weapons, vehicles and nations also.

Sequel "accidentally announced"
http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/showthread.php?t=30283
"Ok, here is the official statement on the game for now. Yes there is an article about our new UE3 game Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad in the UK and US PC Gamer magazines. Frankly, we're more than a bit surprised at the timing of the release of the article. To put it quite bluntly we thought this would hit after the release of Killing Floor. As such we'll be doing a bit of a scramble to get our PR efforts in order while we are in the middle of getting another game ready to ship.

I know many of you have been waiting a very long time for this news, and I am very happy that we can finally confirm what we've been working on these past three years. RO:HOS (as we call it) is real, its using UE3, and its awesome Just bear with us while we recover from this unexpected announcement and in the immortal words of Battlestar Galactica - all will be revealed.

For now, we're not going to say anything else about the game. We'll let the article speak for itself. As Alan mentioned please don't post scans of the article on this forum. Additionally, please don't post quotes of text from the article on these forums. Our proper PR effort will begin in earnest soon, so you'll get more from us on that in the coming days."

Really looking forward to this one considering the original is one of my favorite games. Very Happy

In addition to the sequel to this it seems Tripwire is working on Rising Storm for a game called "Heroes of Stalingrad"

EDIT: Oh lol, "Heroes of Stalingrad" is Red Orchestra 2, heh.

FIVE DOLLARS???????

If anyone loves WW2 FPS, then you would be an idiot for passing this awesome offer up. The game is one of the best I have played online and the community has many great people.
I have been playing from almost the first day(s) of release and I can honestly say it's the first game I have played online and I (personally) have never seen a cheater/hacker/or whatever - script kiddie.
Darkest Hour is a free mod and as it gains poipularity, it will get better also. The D-day map has to be one of the most realistic battles I have fought in a computer game.

I'm exceptionally proud to have been part of the community since early 2004, when it was still unkown and just entering the MSU comp. I watched it grow, played countless builds and gave feedback, and it has done me proud. Everyone I've recommended this too has really enjoyed it. When they went from Mod to Retail I purchased immediately.

Graphics are dated, but the gameplay is just sublime. IMO they have achieved a perfect balance between game and sim. What I like is the servers are populated by mature serious players, who don't much tolerate smacktards. They exist (don't they in everygame?) but are usually dealt with swiftly. If you haven't tried it, definitely worth a shot.

I bought it at lunch, but I really didn't like gameplay. It was pretty much; spawn, rush, die, spawn, rush, die, spawn... That doesn't sound realistic to me, no matter how realistic balistics you have.
I'm not sure how it's now, but are there any servers with respawn off until round is ended?

How would that be cheating? It irks me that theres no target UI, so its really hard to figure out where im shooting.

Sure it's still the center of the screen but it's hard to determine your placement

Because, it isn't the center of your screen. If you haven't noticed, your weapon moves when you move your mouse, making it so it's not always centered.

How is it not cheating, to play a game that was intened to not have crosshairs, with crosshairs?
