Once again I pull a problem out of a hat, seriously is there an evil spirit sitting on my computer waiting to mess around while I sleep? So I left the computer on to download overnight like I always do, the next morning the computer had restarted, so I log in then try to get into the start menu through keyboard but it didn't work, I tried it in different USB ports and tried the mouse in the port I put the keyboard in and the mouse worked but the keyboard never does, restarted couple times just to be extra sure as a problem in the past was sorted that way xD, I googled the problem and found a forum that was going in the right path but abruptly stopped without actually finishing, the keyboard doesn't seem to power on at all, caps and what not don't light up and non of the buttons work, I went to take it back to be fixed and the guy at the store tried it on his and it worked fine, lights and everything, any suggestions?
EDIT: Weird, the extra buttons (Media Player, Pause/Play, Next/Previous, Calculator Restart >.>) work fine but the actual keyboard buttons don't.

use the ps2 adapter if you have it, or ask to get one
i don't get how anyone ever thought making usb keyboards into a standard was a good idea
the single most vital piece of external hardware on the machine put on such an unrealiable delivery method

Reinstalled USB keyboard drivers to no avail, checked Device Manager and seems 1 of USB HID is corrupt.
Whats the real difference between PS/2 and USB? Is one better responding or what? I never really found that out.

difference is none , someone said that in '80 the best keyboards are on 6 pin DIN yes I AM SO OLD I KNOW WHATS A "DIN" IS AND I HAD A SERIAL MOUSE , later they changed mouse serial plug to IBM's PS/2 but the keyboard still was 6DIN , they changed the keyboard plug to ps/2 back in 98/99 if i remember right.
Now they are doing it again but this time to USB ... the most universal port ever , don't know why some bitch about it ... but yeah i remember like people bitched about ps/2 when they had DIN 5 or 6 keyboard.
The only thing about USB Keyboard is this you need a PS/2 keyboard to enable it first in the bios settings , thats it thats the only problem
ok so now lets go back to the topic , you said that this keyboard works on other PCs but not on yours , then just uninstall the HID drivers and reinstall it again by inserting your windows disc after you restart your PC

Sweet, great rundown there, so even with a PS/2 adapter it will run exactly the same, if it stuffs up again like this or something I'll get an adapter, till then, too lazy and no need for wasting money, PSU made sure of that >.>, and once I find that blasted Windows XP CD (I swear it was down here with my driver CDs) I'll fix the problem....or borrow a friends, thanks for the help.
EDIT: Borrowed mickster50000's WinXP CD, all good now, thanks for help.

ps2 taps directly into the hardware
becomes a part of the circuit if you will
usb has to be recognised by the system first, and few bioses properly do, forcing one to use ps2 to reach bios or windows boot menu
among other issues
ofcourse, once it works in windows, like it usually does, there's no problem
with usb1 there's lag when cpu consumption is high, but not percievably on a keyboard - usb2 does not have this problem
edit: right, back on topic
reinstall your motherboard usb drivers
and usb2 drivers if it has some
and check from bios that all your usb ports are enabled and if there's a choice, up the usb voltage
there might also be a choice for 'highspeed' and 'fullspeed' operational speeds
as illogical as it is, highspeed is faster than fullspeed
you could try switching that either way

My last mobo, the USB driver died. The CPU went into a death cycle of 100% usage at all times. Funny thing is that there was no evidence that that is what was causing it. Just after a week of pulling my hair out, I just happened to disable it in bios, for trying anything, and it worked. Got 2 more months out of it till the final death rattle. No post or nothing. Reinstall drivers, try a diff KB. Check your bios.Does the KB work before the OS loads? Also, If you got HD probs, like some bad sectors, it can make some wierd shit happen, so try scan disk, cant hurt. If still no worky, then reread the beginning of this post.
