Quote: | Introducing iPhone 3G. With fast 3G wireless technology, GPS mapping, support for enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange, and the new App Store, iPhone 3G puts even more features at your fingertips. And like the original iPhone, it combines three products in one — a revolutionary phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device with rich HTML email and a desktop-class web browser. iPhone 3G. It redefines what a mobile phone can do — again. |
I'm actually tempted to trade in my SE m600i for this amazing device, too bad my subscription ends in 2009

You will get a lot of haters telling it sucks, it's over priced, its just for the macfag whores and that x phone for y less is doing z more.
Truth is i have a first gen one for +6month and it's the best phone i ever had, never used a mac, im actualy not a big fan of apple, but it works so well and it's so easy to use that you should really consider getting one.
It's not a business phone but for private use it very good IMO

Monthly rates have also nearly doubled as well. Something I-Phone does not advertise. Only for the rich and famous.

The only real downside i can think of is the 2.0 MP camera, i can't really understand why they left it in place. Especially since most of today's phones feature a 3,2 to 5 MP cam...

I thought the Iphone couldn't handle MMS? Or was it videos?

As with desktop Win, winmobile needs some tuning. Never had any problems with my WM devices. But if you try to use it just like that out of the box it's gonna suck. You have to turn some of the desktop plugins off, use a task manager (WM doesn't close programs itself, it just hides the windows so when you have a dozen running it IS slow) and maybe flash a new ROM or firmware.
An out-of-the-box Iphone doesn't have even 2% of that functionality.
The cons of the Iphone I couldn't ignore (made me give it away):
- horrible music management (I mean those playlists and synchronization)
- bad sound without proper EQ
- no multitasking
- still no adequate ICQ client
- horrible distorted sound from speaker on max, otherwise you miss your calls unless you're home
- can't use it VERY fast enough when writing down someone's phone or SMS or enything. in two months I learned to type very fast in 'normal' mode but when u need it ultra-fast it's still lots of typing mistakes and/or slow response
- homebrew software installation is a mess - whether by cable or over wi-fi
- no games (all the emulators crap are for showing off, they're unplayable unless they're slow JRPGs)
- safari is a glitchfest unless you're opening very simple websites

Who knows, maybe the 2nd gen models address some of those issues(I mean it is 2x as fast as the first gen). My HTC Tytn is firmware modded, its just that it feels very clunky and feels like I carry a brick around with me cuz its so bulky .

- bad sound without proper EQ
- no multitasking dont know bout that... but safari has it
- still no adequate ICQ client appstore

- safari is a glitchfest unless you're opening very simple websites its the same as in osx... and that works quite well |
i did all the tweaking etc... i had a palm before and i had a dell axim before... i know bout stuff like that... and it still sux...
about the iphone i responded in the quote... i dunno if youve had it long enough for the updates to the newest firmware... but anyway... with 2.0 theres gonna be a appstore directly available from the iphone... well see some pretty good apps and games... and for sure a good icq client... im not defending anything here... just trying to see things from another POV(damn the porn industry... always thinking of POV porn when writing that )

There's no software that allows you to drag and drop MP3 folders or movies into the Iphone. Connecting to it via FTP is fucked up, dude.
p.s. it's a bad MP3 player with a phone function built in. maybe version3 or 4 will be good, but not the current ones.

Wow you seemed to have some bad experience that no one else(power user or noob) I have known with this phone seems to have had. Anyways yeah maybe you should stay away from it. For most everyone else that has one or tried one, this phone(/ultra-mega-compact-and-feature-full device) has been a godsend.
And WM is bloat-ware, unless you spend countless, thankless hrs tweaking it to run decent.
I wish there was another alternative to compete with MS's shitty mobile offering and Apple, but till then(wtf happened to android?), the apple offering is pretty near perfect in comparison to the competition. And with the SDK being released soon, it can only get better.

Clearly you don't use your phone for ANYTHING other than calls and SMS. Because it's the only use you can get from this 'ultra-compact-stylish-sexy' gadget.
And clearly you've never really used a WM device of the latest generations because you copy-pasted the 'countless hours of tweaking' concept from the PC games thread, lol. WM needs 15 minutes of initial tweaking, that's all. Two steps - remove desktop plugins, install a decent task manager. And MAYBE change the firmware, if needed.
And finally comparing Iphone to WM and calling it superior is THE STUPIDEST thing I've seen recently apart from Lawyer's posts, because they're TOTALLY different. You can do virtually anything on WM and NOTHING on Iphone (apart from calls/SMS that a 5 y.o. Nokia does better). It's like comparing GBA to X360 or something.
Please, just don't write any bullshit if you haven't really experienced both device classes.

Thank you, I've been carefully monitoring http://www.iphoneapps.ru (which has everything) from the very beginning and I tried almost every damn piece of homebrew. But you can't change the following:
1) Input is slow = thus it will never be a business phone
2) Sound is crappy (still no good EQ)
3) Music and video management is a disaster
4) Touch-screen controls are not as precise and/or responsive as you'd wish thus action games play bad
5) Horrible speaker that can't even play a ringtone loug enough without distortion
MAYBE that will be fixed somehow in the future, but we're talking about TODAY and the last few months. Iphone in it's current state lags somewhere behind Nokia smartphones and I ain't talking about WM devices. It has only two good sides:
- Design
- Screen
That's ALL.
p.s. and what's the point in tossing the SDK link? everyone knows there will be sotware for it but as I already said - we're talking about TODAY's iphone. And I don't see how and SDK will improve input, speaker and touchscreen.

I'm an ipod fan. I'm used to the itunes interface. I dunno... i gave it a month tops and i ended up loving it. It's easy. Simple and very efficient. The other bits i dunno about as i never had an iphone but file managment isn't as bad as you say it is. You can use isquint to convert movies into iphone format or ipod format and it'll automatically add them to your movies folder in itunes which inturn allows you to add them to the ipod/iphone. Easy and simple

First of all, caps-lock is not your friend. Makes everything you say sound like it's coming from a whiney 15 yr old.
Second of all, I love how you know exactly what I use my phone for from a couple of sentences. Do you also read a paragraph from a 600 page novel and assume its dumb? Pretty shallow minded, if you ask me. Here is a VERY short list of what I use my phone for:
-Constant email and direction lookup using googlemaps to locate and drive to sites where I am needed, which is two or three taps of the screen
-Live traffic using an app with direct feeds to traffic cams by a tap or two
-iFlickr to take pics at customer sites of wiring and hardware setups which are immediately available to view in decent resolution by co-workers
-RSS Feeds notifying of updates to many websites for business and personal
-Remote access to home server using VNSea, an app that should be very familiar to any poweruser
-Appointment reminder with Calender for organizer
-Browsing with Multi-Touch, which is as about sleek and usable as you can get, someday the WM phones will have this but apple thought of it first
-SMS- Yes you are right, I use text msging, good for you-mostly because on the iPhone I can keep conversations organized and if given a # or website, I can quick-call or quick-link to any site
And more on the fun side of things:
-A music player I find very streamlined and sounds good(according to me and most review sites, ie. everyone else), with 16 Gigs of space, more than enough
-Soulseek to find a song I have in my head and instantly download at nearest wifi hotspot
-A video recorder-a novelty but meh, fun to play with
-Gaming-ScummVM and some oldschool SNES and NES roms, which will get better when the accessory that adds on an analogue pad and controller buttons is released soon. Also looking forward to Spore and other similar games making use of accelerometer that were shown at WWDC
Anyways I could go on and on and with things. The one and best thing that absolutely blows me away and I could not see WM ever doing(especially with the HTC 8125 phone I replaced), is the online repositories of constantly-updated apps for the iPhone. Yes, I can be on the road and download and install/update an app. That is why I am not going back to WM, now or ever.
Besides, OSX is built on a *nix core. Windows is windows. Especially evident in problems like with the tilt and its graphics driver problem.

I knew there would be some haters on this thread, it's true that the phone as some weaknesses, like I agree it can get slow when typing fast, but I still type way faster than on any other phone, I suck at typing SMS so I'm not the best person to compare phones
I have to disagree about music management which I think is brilliant and straight forward, hard to see what's missing, browsing with one finger through album covers is great and makes it fast and easy to find anything, transfer through Itunes is also quite simple, dunno what's there's to complain about.
I don't think you used the phone enough, because at least now installing third party apps is really easy, they also are well organized by category and they fix quite a lot of flaws the out of the box phone has, like sending MMS or Video camera, but also some nice addition like an rss feed reader I enjoy quite a lot and some more useless ones like to get lyrics from the mp3 playing, small apps but nice to have.
I have to agree that speakers are an issue, I heard many ppl complaining that ring tone wasn't loud enough at max level, never was a problem for me but i can understand that, also speakers are weak and sounds gets really distorted on max level, but heh it's a phone so don't think sound will get much better in the new one.
Where it's killing any other phone on the market is web browsing, it's just brilliant, I never was a phone geek so I can't say I tested many but I had a few nokia, a blackberry (for work) and HTC, all I can say is web browsing goes from unusable to at best very annoying. I'm using my blackberry a lot to browse intranet and omg it's such a pain in the ass especially after using the iphone, it makes it so easy and enjoyable.
the SMS management is great, very nice to be able to keep track of the convo, looks much like instant messenger.
What the first gen lacks is microssoft exchange support and faster operating system, apparently this will be fixed in the second gen version.
I'll try to get one when it's out to see if i can finally ditch my blackberry and use the new iphone exclusively, let's wait and see

I'm still waiting for a decent firmware for it and straight after that i gonna get one to myself.
My m8 got one, and the only good side apart from unlimited browsing (o2 r0x) it's look more like a expensive brick to me. There's a serious problem with getting a decent apps for it and gamimg is still poor - I can play better games on my SE k750i than on Iphone ...
Also Safari still could use some improvements as well, is acting a bit dodgy on some sites.

Nice lil guide for upcoming games.
Kroll especially looks badass, tho all the games are quite impressive for first-gen efforts at gaming on the device.
And btw if that isn't enough to excite some, any emulation freaks should wet themselves at the prospects of playing with this: http://www.icontrolpad.com
So yeah, seems iphone is just getting started with its true potential. Glad apple didn't decide to take the asshole route like they have before and instead opened the device up to almost unlimited possibilities.
