Kaspersky Anti-vir is good but it sometimes slows some things because it must scan it first and then lets you open it but Kaspersky only does this once ,
Nod32 does the opposite it lets you open your application , but it slows down when he scans it
means , Kaspersky scans once and then you can work without any interruptions , Nod32 scans in the background all the time the application you are working on making it run slower
Yes some will say Kaspersky takes 25mb to run and Nod32 only 15mb but i take a program that doesn't slow down my applications when i work on them

NOD32 3. It's amazing, and much faster than the older 2.72 version.

Theres only two AV's to use. NOD32 and Kaspersky. Nothing else. Use whatever feels right to you. I use kaspersky on my main computer and nod32 on my laptop.

Norton is the god of AV. Most people are just afraid to admit it or use it wrong.

i could also use some help guys. a friend of mine called me last night and asked me to help him. it seems he downloaded (or something like that) a virus that does not allow him to enter any of his Drives (C,D,E,...) on ly if he right-clicks and select open. and he is also unable to install anything (at least that is what he told me). he only saw the damage after he had to reinstall Windows. this is all i can tell you guys cos i don't know anything else myself.
what i want is if anyone knows any anti-virus capable of scaning the HDD wothout having the OS installed. though i am not sure if he has a virus, i am not willing to exclude that possibility just yet.
EDIT: it seems the virus is somehow capable of making the system restart and make one of the hard disks (he has 2 Sata 160GB HDDs) dissapear. i must mention that he has 3 Drives for every Harddrive and at one time (only 1 time) i managed to see only 4 out of 6 drive letters. also, after trying to install KIS 8 (on a fresh WinXp install) it stopped the install process and it started somekind of an alert to some anti-virus program and "dissabled TASK MANAGER"
also, i remembered (though i am not sure) that a quite a few years ago there was an anti-virus (i think) capable of scanning and deleting viruses without needing a OS. i am not sure, but i think it's name was F-Prot.
So, the question still is if you guys know any program that can scan HDDs without needing a OS?

Windows Defender ftw! Naw seriously. Nod never gave me any alarm as I used it, while other av's were squeeling like a soap dropping action. And I'm fine with defender as it is for the moment.

@rinze: thanks for those sites. i will try'em a.s.a.p.
as i wrote in the Hardware section (Restarting Computer), one of the HDDs has a drive were bad sectors were alocated in order to not use them. you can see there what i think but i still have an open mind to any help i can get. maybe someone else knows more than i do. as i said there, the only program that creates problems is the AV. any other program i installed worked just fine until i installed the AV. no restarts till then. after installing it, giving the required restart to complete the install, when the welcome screen showed up, i got (only 1 time) a blue screen regarding a memory dump. in the system tray i had everything else except the Av which was still loading. after that, the PC restarted over and over again. most likely it's a hardware problem but i am still asking: could there be a virus that can restart the PC over and over again but only after the Av has been installed?

I have always been a hardcore NOD32 user but I feel the newer versions seem to use a bit more system overhead than they used too... Always happens with these apps as they expand into trying to take care of too much in one app. Anyways I can vouch that on my new quadcore my boottime and scantimes are half of what they were with NOD32 and I have verified with a couple of known infected files that it works equally as well as NOD32 (at least at present time).

I'm using McAfee VirusScan, latest version. It is very good and it scans the computer at any time. It makes many logs, but very useful logs. ~20 MB when it's scanning.
