Anyone running server 2008 on their desktop?
What is the max memory supported on the x86 version?
Is there DX10 support.

I am sick of the memory hungry Vista.

I didnt find any significant difference between vista and server 08.
I benchmarked with Trackmania United and the difference was not existent, or to be fair, server 2008 was always faster (e.g.: 36,8 fps vs 36,6 fps) Smile

Out of the box server uses less ram, but thats it. You might as well disable a lot of services in vista, use vLite before you install and be done with it.

How much ram does your Vista use, while no program is running?

In large part because Superfetch is disabled by default.

Outside disabling services that you won't use, you can disable Superfetch to see the memory utilization lowered, but it isn't a good move as it is preferable to have files cached in memory rather than accessed on the hard drive.

Superfetch doesnt just utilize the ram as cache but also uses ~100 MB (!) of ram for itself to work. But yeah, if superfetch works its nice to have, but for playing games for example you might as well kill for the timebeing.

If the PC so needs the RAM it holds, it will be paged, just like anything else, so it would be criminally stupid to have it off, seeing how fast my Visual Studio starts with it, and how slow it starts without it (just one example).

one should never cause windows to page, cause that is crazy.
And i never said to disable superfetch completely, but if needed for the timeframe of playing a game for example.
