Seeing as many of you don't read the PC Hardware section, I was hoping to get some insight on some games that output Digital Audio.

I recently purchased some Z5500s and an Auzentech Prelude and want to give it a whirl.

Digital audio?

Wouldn't you just connect it via digital output and adjust the audio mode in the control panel for the audio card?

Though I don't know much about this sort of thing, currently using a Logitech ZX-2300 speaker system with a XonarD2X audio card.
(Used to have a X-Fi Elite Pro but sold it due to the annoying "Squeal of Death" issue certain people experience, not a bad card otherwise though and the Prelude is quite a bit better than a standard X-Fi.)

All games can output to digital audio. Are you looking for any specific standard?

I can put the card on to emulate 2 channels... A game has to output dolby digital 5 channel for the digital connection to properly give me 5 channels. Like if I want the game to give me awesome EAX effects of bullets zooming passed my head etc or no?

No just anything that will actually output digital. Im playing Warcraft 3 right now, no digital.

Like DTS, Dolby Digital. Not just 2ch over the digital cable.

Ill have a look through that in a few.

Had a look at those links... they don't really explain games that have digital audio... I'm really lost with this whole thing (I feel like a 'tard).

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 and the card works splendidly for DTS movies and digital movies and mp3s and such.

No one's really explained (nor in any of those links that I could see...) how I am to get digital audio from a game that doesn't have explicit 5.1 DTS or even dolby digital? I'm just really lost.

Though reading through this article, it sounds like it might be better to just use the analogs of the prelude and hook something else up in the coax? Like it just seems the soundcard will do a better job of processing the audio than the receiver of the logitech speakers?

I might have misunderstood but do you mean you can't use 5.1 or similar setups and games instead default to 2.0 stereo output?

I don't know the specifics for Warcraft III but I do know that the sound engine in DirectX was updated in Vista so you would need to install the "ALchemy" application from Creatives website if you want proper sound output in the titles that have been affected by this. (Will also enable EAX in those games that support it.)

http://support.creative.com/downloads/
(Latest ALchemy version should be available from there, May 2008.)

The auzentech prelude auto installed it and set it up (for War3)...

PC games mix surround over the the analog channels.

movies/console games have it mixed in digital signal as in Dolby digital/DTS.

In saying that, if I want both movies AND games, which is the best medium?

Looks like the sound card does a better job with decoding AND playback than the logitech receiver. Gonna give analog a shot, get back to you guys soon with results for gaming AND movie playback!

bit confused now Razz

if you play games through your spdif (digital), it will only make stereo.

you don't want that now do you...

The game must also support that no?

I mean I can turn on the DDL encoding, but it just encodes stereo over 5.1

Thats what I had figured. I've got it on the analog right now.

The system with the card sounds absolutely fantastic. It really drives the sub well and is extremely warm sounding.

Games sound great, Counterstrike Source sounds amazing. DotA works in surround.

Watched part of Layer Cake, which also sounded amazing.

Upmixing of tunes using CMSS sounds incredible. Overall amazing.

Haven't found a game that uses eax5 yet, any suggestions so I can give it a go?

Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142? They're old as fuck and using EAX HD (=EAX 5). Smile

As for the DD encoding, you're probably better off connecting to the analog. Those speakers (Z5500) aren't that good to feel a real difference between digital and analog. On the other hand, encoding games' audio to DD (or DTS for that matter) on a shit chip (even on the best sound cards), you'll notice the difference.

BioShock is optimized for both EAX Advanced HD 4.0 and 5.0 (this is not the same as EAX5 as far as I understand it).

Actually Bioshock uses OpenAL (irregardless of what the menu says ingame), so theoretically any sound card drivers that offer complete (hardware or software) OAL acceleration would be able to produce all the effects Bioshock throws.

Yeah I know it does, but it's also optimized for use with Creative Labs EAX ADVANCED HD 4.0 or EAX ADVANCED HD 5.0 compatible sound cards.

Disregardless, I think it's a great game just to test run because of the sound alone.

"Disregardless" Laughing Edit: WTF, it's a real word Laughing just like "Irregardless" Razz

Great game indeed!

My first EAX experience was with Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. I just bought an Audigy 2, and not knowing what EAX was, naively I ran the demo. DAAAAMN, those caves and the echoes I heard, lmao, I spent 20 minutes just listening to the Spanish terrorists from different angles. Laughing

if you have audigy2 still, did you install latest drivers? because with the default drivers (from cd) it has eax3, but later drivers gave eax4 support (64 channels)

though use PAX drivers no matter which creative card you have Wink they are much better.. though the author of these drivers have quite a lot problems with english:-] too bad creative fucked daniel_k drivers up, still - PAX is good, too Wink
