So lets hear it, do you like them, and why or why not? Try not to start flame wars, everyone is entitled to their preference.

I really like a GOOD mmorpg. Constantly updating content, something that is persistent and you can build on is very fun for me. I especially love the interaction with other gamers, both cooperatively and competitively. I like that it forces people to play together, as this is the reason I go online. The monthly fee is 15-20 a month, and this covers constant patches to increase stability, and add content. Small fee for a large payoff.

If you do like em, post your favourite all time (Don't pick one strictly for nostalgia)

Mine is still Asheron's Call. No game consumed as much of my life as that did, and I still play with my mother from time to time.

This has been debated before over and over in many threads already.

I think 99.99% of all MMOs are a big steaming pile of shit.

The biggest problem I see with MMOs today is that the universe doesn't change in a living fashion. It's just static NPCs and quests over and over. Go kill 20 mobs of that type, go find this item, go bring item from A to B. Endless grinding of crap *yawn*

Upcoming PC games 2009 and onwards
Bravery is not a function of firepower.

It is probably the one game type I can truly spend countless hours on without becoming a total douche and hunger for world domination in(such as I do in FPS games. It's getting better but if I play an FPS game I wanna fucking own it).

I still have fond memories of Starwars Galaxies. It wasn't particularly good overall, but some of the things were epic in quality untill SoE ruined it for EVERYONE.

I have lots of great memories from MMO's, like the first time i was killed by another player and robbed of all my stuff in Ultima Online.

When i was seriously scared running around in Everquest, taking boats across continents and stuff.

Or when I with a party of eight members wiped out over seventy people attacking our keep in Dark Age of Camelot.

When I attained Field Marshal with my alliance-char then later General with my horde-char and later Gladiator in World of Warcraft. Also great PVE experiences like killing Ragnaros, C'thun, Kel'Thuzad, Vashj, Kaelthas and finally Illidan, all awesome stuff. Smile

Para,
I created a topic here so that the debating of MMORPGs as a genre can be debated in one spot. Don't think for a second the debates are just going to be gone all the sudden Wink Now we can just link here, and let people debate it out here, and leave the game threads to talk of the actual game, not thrashing or praising of the genre.

Me too Javlar. I also got to see Kil'jaedan die recently. My best friend who I killed Illidan with is still playing and is now in a sunwell guild. (Spight, executus, horde, if you're wondering).

if you have a family, kids, a band and your work (like in my case ) there is no time to play mmorpgs , you can only finish single player games when you have time (not even all of them) Smile

Interesting! I would think an MMORPG would suit that demographic more than anything. Can't go out and leave the kids on a friday night, but still want some entertainment? Don't want to spend a lot of money on renting movies and such every month?

The small bits of time you invest in SP seems like it could just as well be put into MMORPGs.

When I have little to no free time, I find an MMORPG where I can hop on for 20 minutes or so and just jump right in, do a little PVP, maybe do a couple quests or whatever to be a great constant source of entertainment.

Not saying you're in the wrong by any means, just surprised Smile !

yeah the end bosses are cool & there's a lot going on, but you can't argue that standing there hitting f1 & f2 all day long is somehow better/more fun than using WASD and shooting with the mouse.

I think you're missing the point. I doubt he was being literal, more a comment about how those games are about grinding through repetetive enemies to level up.

that's the pve content side, it is very simple and to some also very boring... to myself.

The PVP side is alot different because of the fact that you're playing against real people who react in different ways each time, you build strats with your teams, you build new setups, new talent builds

each char has an amazing amount of abilitys to make use of which means there's an awful lot to do/keep track of so it can be pretty difficult whilst still being fun

I know when I played on my warlock I had over 60 binds, based on macros and spells, pet controls etc it's not as easy as it looks. To say it's just kill a mob over and over again is an ignorant comment and also very wrong.

I fully understand that but it's still an ignorant comment

it's like how the warcraft community is now, there's the pvpers (player vs player) who hate the pve (player vs enviroment, computer controlled mobs) and will say OH HA HA ITS EASY YOU JUST HAVE TO PRESS ONE BUTTON WHILST BEING IN A GROUP OF 25 - and well for some classes that's actually true

the pvers will always say pvp is unbalanced and leans towards certain classes, it's easy for some whilst being difficult for others etc etc

it's just ignorant arguments like that.

I've played Wow, Eve, Helbreath, Rose, Ragnarok, Guild wars, Red Moon, heck even runescape. It's not ignorance, it's just my opinion.

There's nothing to do in mmo's except farm. You have no freedom. In FPS's (even those on rails), you do. I have the option of charging like a nub, I can shoot those barrels so they fall on the guy, I can sneak up and knife him, I can throw a grenade, I can use a smoke grenade and run for some better cover.

In a mmo, you have maybe 1 or 2 different approaches per mob or maybe 3 or 4 per player enemy. It's just using the right thing at the right time because of the rock-paper-scissors balancing. When non-standard approaches are so rare people talk about them, I get bored, I'm not some mindless drone.

Good example in Eve: in a missile Raven farming on 'rats for monies in 0.0. Really common & as boring as all hell. Lock, press f1, then alttab out for 4mins. Yayyy!

EDIT: oh right, not to mention after I kill a guy in an FPS, it's likely the story will change/introduce more content in a short while. in an mmo you just do the same thing again.

WoW and EVE being the only games there that are past the PVE stage.

Farming is always there as is the PVE side of the game which consists of the exact same thing over and over, enter raid instance > kill trash > kill boss > loot rinse and repeat, people do enjoy that though.

Now coming to PVP

Vs a computer controlled character yes but vs a real player it's nothing like that, you have to make use of all your abilitys in certain ways if you want to live. You don't just walk in, click on the target and it does an auto attack and you do some special move. In WOW, you target and then you have your spellbook which is loaded with attacks/spells and the minute you cast something your character is casting it - it's real time unlike all the other MMOS out there. I can show you an example

http://www.warcraftmovies.com/stream.php?id=74545&stream=&h=ccb99b47ee3017a4c4c8bd4412a5ead2
this is a duel movie from a mage named trig vs every class there is, it shows how different classes are. Each has their own style, their own crowd control ( http://www.wowwiki.com/Crowd_Control ) which makes them unique

in arenas 2v2, 3v3, 5v5 you build teams based on the synergy of certain classes but all in all if you're a better player, you'll probably be able to win anyway. It requires an immense amount of teamwork and good player from you and your mates to be a top team as it does for say counter strike or any other game that can be considered an E-sport. Now you don't just cast your spells and win, you time CC, you time attacks, you look out for opportunities to pull off clutch kills etc

there's more than just nuke comps, there's outlast etc games can last up to 10 hours if people can actually be bothered to keep playing.

Another big thing is the fact that you have to bind everything so you can be fast enough to react against another good player, some classes have less binds while others have so many and it can be very difficult to control everything at one time so it does require alot out of you.
I know what you mean about killing the mobs etc but WoW PVP is nothing like that.

What I want from a MMORPG is a world that actually changes based on the players actions. I hate the fact that once you do a quest that it still exists and millions of others will do the exact same quest. Whats the point if the world doesn't change by your actions? Why even be a hero if your actions are meaningless? Also many MMORPGS are based on wars like DAOC or WoW whats the point if you can't actually win the war? Certainly this would mean a complete server reset afterwards but could you imagine the PVP that would be going on when the last stronghold is being sieged... It would make one awesome event that people would talk about forever.

At this time there really isn't a point in playing a MMORPG.
