was going to post to someone the explanation the difference between windows live free and windows live paid but seems they recently changed that...

Quote:

On July 22, 2008 Microsoft's Chris Satchell, CTO of the company’s Entertainment devices division, announced that Games For Windows LIVE would be free to developers. Previously, select publishers and developers used the system and had to pay for it – now, however, it’s free. Also, all Games For Windows LIVE features are now free for gamers, such as matchmaking and cross-platform play. Satchell added that the move was a “way to improve Windows gaming”.

As well as free multiplayer, Microsoft has reduced the technical requirements for those developers looking to utilize Live – such as removing playlist servers, allowing studios to use the Microsoft matchmaking servers instead. They will also be adding a new Marketplace to the PC version of Live later this year. Microsoft is also said to be revamping the UI which should make a debut in late 2008.

huh, Microsoft's making something free.. guess there is still hope for the world then ? Laughing

So basically we can now i.e, enjoy all the achievements in the various games for free?

Vegas 2 is not G4WL. GoW had achievements, I think FOUC has too. CoD4 had them too, but not G4WL.

All games for windows live titles has had achievements as far as I know, press F1 or Home whatever key is bound to show your profile settings in the main menu or when signing in and then check it to see the G4W:L titles you own and what you have unlocked for them. Smile
(Works for both offline and online profiles, offline profiles can't unlock achievements though but can view them.)

EDIT: As LeoNatan said above several other titles offer similar rewards, it's not exactly a Live! only thing but it's mostly associated to the Live! system on XBox, G4W:L! ports generally just copy them over to the PC version.
(Mass Effect is a good example of a non Live! title with achievements as unlocking those gives the player various bonuses, CoD4 is another example which uses them as well to give various multiplayer upgrades.)

Of course you do, usually the goldmembership on the PC was fee based now its free meaning you dont have pay that fee. Still you would need a valid key such as The Club or Halo 2 to acces the online mode (like any other game out there).

I bet they start charging for it again. They want more people to use the service and hope that it catches on and hope the majority like it. Then the price will be injected back in.

Microsoft will be revamping and re-launching their Games for Windows LIVE Marketplace into a fully blown digital distribution store.

Due to launch in mid November, the store will feature 100 titles at launch, Publisher RSS feeds, and a few other features as well.

Interview: http://news.bigdownload.com/2010/10/22/feature-games-for-windows-marketplace-to-relaunch-as-web-site-n/

In the past months they announced there are several PC games to release that they can't talk about yet, and they asked PC gamers for their opinions on how to improve GFWL: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=404721

I believe we're going to be pleasantly surprised in the following months.

As long as it's not games you can get elsewhere then yay. If it's just games that we could just have had on Steam instead then fuck off already M$.

You won't be able anytime soon to buy their (old) games on any other service: The 2 Halo games, the Age of Empires games, the MS Flght Simulator games, etc.

I also had a change to speak with Peter Orullian, Product Manager for PC and Mobile gaming at Microsoft about the relaunch. First and foremost, he confirmed to me that the Marketplace will not be selling games that use Steamworks. "If a game is a Steamworks game, it's not something we're selling."

Too bad MS, because SteamWorks games are rapidly increasing.

Saw this on neogaf:

Quote:
IG: Are there any further PC games coming from Microsoft to support the market? There's been a great deal of promise of more love for the PC gaming sector, but PC gamers feel a bit unloved.

PO: I appreciate that. I certainly don't have visibility in the portfolio for the PC. What their plans are I don't know.

PO stands for Peter Orullian, the head of "Microsoft's new PC vanguard", as the article claims. And apparently he has absolutely no idea what his team, the people that he's leading, is planning.

And I thought GFWL had a sliiiiiight chance to succeed this time Laughing

As expected they're most likely just gonna try to compete with Steam and no games we wouldn't have otherwise.

It has failed before it launched if that really is the case.

I think the other thing that's going to be really compelling for us is the fact that I alluded to before. We have this story that spans multiple platforms. I start thinking about ways in which I can leverage my console and my phone partners and start to create awareness. We're starting to understand more and more that gamers – while there are some that are loyal to a single platform – are gaming on multiple platforms. I start thinking about ways that I can talk to console and phone gamers about cool games that are available here. I start thinking about ways I can run a program where I incentivize you in some interesting way. Maybe you purchase a game on the console and there's a benefit or reward on the PC, and vice versa. We're thinking through these current permutations around, “Hey, we actually have a very unique position in the marketplace now.”

But of course! Sharing achievements with 360! And sharing games between PC and Windows Phone 7! What an advantage over Steam!

He's the head of Microsoft's division in charge of releasing/porting PC games and he doesn't know what his teams plans are? What?
