The decline of gaming lololol

Quote:
Oleg Yavorsky: It's always our intention to make games for as broad an audience as possible, but we've never had problems with getting Europeans to understand our games, and we have had problems with North America and Asia. It's just a different cultural mindset that makes our local topics less interesting.

Quote:
Yes. There is. Our games have always been hardcore, which has always been a struggle with publishers. Big companies always want you to make your game as easy as possible, so that any really non-intellectual person can play it. They want all sorts of tutorials to guide the player through, and this is something we've always been very resistant to. In our market we're used to having cheap games. That means all our audience play a lot of games and hence they're really hardcore about them - they want really challenging games, and they don't need to be guided through with basic explanations like, "This is your gun; this is how you move.

Quote:
But then, everything, even up to the colour spectrum and how bright your game is, can be an issue. It seems that to appeal to North America you need really flashy, bright games, and you can see that every eastern European game is very dark.

The publisher pressure is on, it seems...

Good that GSC doesn't care about them and shows them some attitude! Rebel against the publishers! Razz

The previous publisher THQ is what caused Shadow of Chernobyl to be such a mess, it worked but a lot of content was cut. (Good news is that a lot of that content has also been added back to Clear Sky based on various videos and screens.)

Stalker was a good game but due to all the changes they did during the last phase when they had to meet the final deadline the game didn't fully deliver all that had been promised.
(Still a great game and mods like Oblivion Lost really helps, also seems the devs are trying to continue support with the original game once CS has been out for a while.)

Also try Sk4ce or Float32 shader modifications, F32 rewrites most of them while the latest Sk4ce release takes the alpha shaders from the E3 2007 build that leaked recently and adds support for heavy parallax occlusion mapping, improved motion blur, depth of field and godrays. Smile
(F32 for CS is also under development and due to support from GSC a release should happen shortly after CS itself has been released.)

Infact you can just download any version of the E3 leak and copy the Data/Shaders/R2 folder over to Stalker but it'll cause quite a performance hit and the game will look very dark. (Shaders are more advanced and also not fully optimized as it's a older build, won't look like this in the final Clear Sky game as it looks a bit different if you check the latest screens.)

You can get the latest version of Sk4ce's shaders here:
http://stalkerin.gameru.net/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewtheoned&lid=227
(Warning, read the readme and configure the "modification" the way you want it, enabling all effects will cause a performance hit as the shaders are more demanding than either the original ones or Float32.)

Well, obviously it'll make your fps drop a bit, but it sounds very promising! I'll try tonight and if i have the time i'll make some screens with and without the mod ^^

I played trough and uninstalled Stalker a while ago but I still have some screens. Smile

Original Stalker shaders (Plus mods.):

Sky4ce shaders 1.8:

(Dust cloud makes screen a bit brighter than intended.)

Float32 shaders:

(A bit brighter and more vibrant.)

Clear Sky shaders:

(As I said they are much darker.)

Finally here's a Sky4ce 2.0 screen.

(Not the best image though, looks better ingame.)

Those dots around the NPC's head are shadows with slight jittering enabled by adding -sjitter to the command line of for example the Stalker shortcut.
(Such as -nointro -nolog -sjitter -smap4096 -silent_error_mode -mblur.)
(Disables the intro videos, stops logging, shadow jittering and a shadow resolution of 4096 instead of 1024, game will crash on error instead of reporting bugs and a sort of motion blur.)

EDIT: The screens might look quite bad but they are somewhat compressed (JPG) and it looks much better in the actual game and in motion, they're taken at bad times as well with the first screens being taken with the ingame time close to morning and the 2.0 screen taken shortly after noon.
(I also hadn't configured the settings regarding brightness and contrast to properly work with the mods I used so the screens doesn't look exactly like they should do.)

To be honest, i see nothing in those shots that warrant bothering much with the new shader stuff. very minimal on the eyeballs really. For the most part i see bloom effect is on one shot there and that is all that makes it look lighter (dust cloud) or not.

Well, that could be a god ray, which looks less impressive on screenshots. God rays are better observed when moving. But i agree, it doesn't offer *THAT* much better image quality. But i'll give it a try, maybe it's better than these screens show.

God rays are rather subtle and can be difficult to see (Easy way to check is window openeing in buildings such as the ruined one near Fox in Cordon.), there's no such things in those shots and as I said they are pretty bad, looks better in the actual game due to how it works. Smile
(Position of clouds and the sun increases or decreases the amount of light in the area and ofcourse the time of day has a effect as well.)

Also as I mentioned I used a couple of modifications and the configuration file wasn't properly set up for such a merge, fixed it later but didn't take any screens.
(It's OL as a base then carefully merged with about 30 or so other mods including big ones like Weather Overhaul, Panoramic View and the CloseCaption subtitle modification and also smaller stuff like new weapon models and various retextures.)

Like said before, there are mods that fix ALOT. Oblivion Lost is strongly recommended with patch 1.0004 or 0005

Depends on what you mean with freeplay. You are able to just go anywhere you want, without doing the quests (depends on the scorcher and radiation ofcourse, etc.).

What i understood from the previews and interview is that it's going to be more free than the first STALKER.

I don't know how they implemented the limitations of the original STALKER in Clear Sky, but if they use the same restrictions in some areas, then it won't be possible. But all of that becomes clear when it's released.

My best guess is that they loosened some restrictions, as the Clear Sky explains how these restrictions came to be for some areas.

(There's a winter version as well.)

And here's the subtitle modification, really helps to understand what they say.
http://stalker.filefront.com/file/In_Game_CC_and_Subtitles;90520
http://stalker.filefront.com/file/Authenticity_Sound_Pack;90521

As a bonus I used these weapon mods and merged them with OL with the use of the WinMerge utility. Smile

Sawed off Toz34
http://www.fpsbanana.com/skins/44880
(All the others are already in Oblivion Lost.)

Knife model replacement.
http://www.fpsbanana.com/skins/44864

Mosin Nagant.
http://stalker.filefront.com/file/100_Working_Mosin_Nagent_for_Oblivion_Lost_211;92150

Blood mod.
http://stalker.filefront.com/file/BB_Mod_Redux_BETA;92330

There's a bunch of other retextures on FPSBanana and I also used Panoramic and Weather Overhaul but merging those is extremely difficult.
(Panoramic gives a distant view without fog all the way to the NPP and WO improves the weather and also graphics as the weather controls lightning but as I said it's extremely difficult to merge both of these with OL.)

From what I've read CS have a completely different and more active & dynamic faction system which would enable something like Freeplay, ie. you can walk around and mess with the factions for a while instead of following the main quest. We'll see just what it means in ~2 weeks. The original notion of "Freeplay" may not be carried through, but due to the new faction system I believe gameplay should be more open and "free". We'll see.
