Friend asked for suggestions in this genre, and my personal experience is limited to the X series and Freelancer. X3: Terran Conflict is of course due soon, but are there any other relatively recent (like 2000 and onwards) titles in this genre that are actually good? Seems like most if not all space trading/combat sims nowadays are indie titles from european dev houses with horrible production values.

Evochron Renegades. Yep. Indie developed but very very good.
Multiplayer with planetary landings. Huge seamless universe. Pretty decent graphics. Modifiable. Ability to run your own dedicated server. PVP and Coop play. Central story line. Ship yards where you can purchase equipment, scale and rotate ship pieces to change the look of your ship. Awesome awesome game.

SPACE RANGERS 2

Space Rangers 2 is in my personal top 3 Greatest Games Of All Time list.
But, I dunno if that is the type of game he is referring to. Yes, it is space trading... but it is also an arcade game, an RTS, and a text adventure game all rolled into one sweet package.
And, the space traidng is 2d top down view. So, it really isn't a sim along the lines of Freelancer or the X games.

Evochron Renegades looks real interesting, gonna try out the demo myself. And yeah, I mentioned Space Rangers 2 to my friend earlier but he was completely put off by the top down view and it kinda slipped my mind as well. Will have to try that too when I've the time. Smile

Guys, there are fixes that remove the SF protection on SR2, by the way. Check GCW. I own the SR double pack (SR1 and SR2 on DVD) but I detest Starforce and would never again, knowingly, install that trash on my machine. The last time I had that, it killed my old Plextor DVDRW. Now I just use fixes.

As for Reboot? Holy shit! *laughs* I didn't even know it existed! I'm going to try and find the English version.

1) Deus Ex
2) System Shock 2

Of course, if I go REALLY far back.. I have to throw in the first time I sat down at an Apple IIe and played Wizardry and Ultima. . . but I think the two games I mentioned above, for me, were the best games I have ever played. Course, I would need like a top 25 to really name all the one's I have found great over the years. But yeah, I am pretty comfortable with those as my top two personally. And, I would place Space Rangers 2 right behind them.

Really good review of Space Rangers 2 by the way:
http://www.netjak.com/review.php/1021

Summary:
" Overall:
Buy this game. It comes with Space Rangers 1, so it's really 2 games for $40. It's a fun experience from beginning to end, and it will keep you occupied for quite some time.

I had Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Radiata Stories, the online client for the Spycraft CCG, and a ton of other games to play and review. I was playing them before Space Rangers 2, and after I installed the game, I basically didn't touch any of them again until after I had beaten Space Rangers 2. After I had purchased the game, I replied to the guy with the MIT alumni address and told him, "Well, you've now completely sidetracked my review schedule." Not only is the best game I've played this year...it probably just cracked my top 15 games of all time."
