piracy has many forms and the worst are the ones who counterfeit products and sell them on the streets or distribute them to stores as "originals". That is morally wrong as it "steals" money from the developers and distributors. This is where copyright laws should be applied
but what most people do on the intarwebs is really only copying, i.e. copyright infringement and imho that is a huge difference to commercial piracy. So calling that "stealing" too, is wrong. In the sense of the word and in the morality implied. And in my opinion copyright laws shouldnt apply here... |

I would like to point out that copyrights were never meant to effect the consumer. The idea was made so that way inventors and businesses could make new things with out the fear of competition making the exact same thing and putting them out of businesses from their own work.
This of course is is a fair and logical idea as it would be awful to invent the next big thing and having a giant corporation like Microsoft copying it and slapping their name on it, mass producing it, and then selling it for less. The law was really made to protect the little guys mostly by stopping others from stealing and making profit off of someone else's hard work.
This is something piracy fails to do unless the pirated software is being sold. So as long as we don't sell it we aren't really stealing or costing any profit to the copyright owner. While I can't speak for anyone else I can gladly say that I have NEVER sold pirated software.
