Plasma works like your old TV but it dies faster (Max 3 years of constant use ) then LCD , has max resolution of 1024 x 720 but on any resolution the image looks sharp , and you can watch from any position to get a bright image , this plasma that you have picked takes 235 W + 20W (build in speakers) = 255 W to power it
LCD dies in 5 - 7 years but can be easily repaired to last another 10 -15 years when you mod the lamps , image looks sharp only on native resolution , you must watch it from a straight line to have a nice bright picture (if you watch from far left you see only a bright , negative image but it depends on the matrix) ,this LCD that you have picked 210W + 20W(build in speakers) = 220W to power it , o and LCDs can be used as a alternative PC monitor or a projector for consoles
so if you intend to use it as a second monitor then i recomend the LCD

Personally I would go with LCD. While Plasma's do give a slightly better picture it the lifespan and burn in problems which have vastly improved but still exist can be quite a pain.

I went with plasma cause of the superior black level and contrast. Nowadays both lcd and plasma are almost equal. So instead compare tvs no matter which technology they use. Panasonic plasmas are very nice, i have a 50" myself. And its bull that they cannot be used as computer monitors. Mine works just fine for both gaming and watching hd x264 movies.

Been wanting a new TV for years now but I keep waiting because the price is always dropping.
I am going with LCD. I really like the Panasonic's I saw in the stores. Good viewing angles, better pictures.
I would go with LCD because power usage like Saint said. I don't see a huge difference in plasma vs LCD.

Sony 46" LCD here, best dam thing I ever bought. Don't watch it much myself, but the Mrs watch TV and my Son plays 360 on it. I do stream the odd movie from the PC via the 360 on it but .
SHORT AND TO THE POINT LCD vs PLASMA
Bottom line for me is simple. Go and check out the TVs in a shop, what looks best for you?, it's that simple. You are buying this for you, so in the end, whatever looks good to you Plasma or LCD...don't matter as long as you are happy .

Damn alot of stereotypical views on Plasma here
Quote: | lcd because plasma uses gazillion electricity |
While Plasma has been known for using alot of electricity, the fact has changed, LCD use a constant amount of energy while Plasma shifts according to the amount of colors and contrast on display. Meaning brighter colors = More power.
Quote: | Personally I would go with LCD. While Plasma's do give a slightly better picture it the lifespan and burn in problems which have vastly improved but still exist can be quite a pain. |
This might be a personal preference but I have never had burn-in problems on my PX80 Plasma TV, sure Retention but thats gone in a matter of seconds.
Quote: | you wont get a decent plasma for 900 euros.. go for LCD |
Last time I checked a panasonic panel is at just over 900 euroes which easily beats LCD in the same price range.
Quote: | I have a 42 inch LG LCD, best purchase i ever made, use it for cable tv, PS3 and sometime's PC gaming, i don't like the burn in with plasma, but that's my personal preferance |
Again I use my screen with both Cable TV, Xbox 360, PC gaming (plus TV-out through HDMI) and work flawlessly without any burn-in, but as you point out personal preference.
Quote: | Panasonic TH-37PV80 runs at 1024 x 768

no contest really |
What does resolution means if the TV cant display natural cooler? Upscaling on the newer Pioneer & Panasonic panels is working out great, it works so great that Pioneer's Kuro series is considered the best TV money can buy atm.
------------
Anyway I would advice (as CaptainCox did) go out and look for yourself. In the end its about what you think is best.

Westinghouse LCD here, and it = incredimazing... It's about 2 and a half years old and I have it as my main PC monitor, my main TV and playing my consoles on it. I bought it when 1080p wasn't available technically in Canada and had it shipped here from the states.

Westinghouse, funny you say that. That is always a brand that keeps popping up. On consumer reports it does really well, like the top 3. At the store they promote other brands a lot more.

Westinghouse is 100% about quality products. In fact, they did not put an ATSC tuner in the TV and therefore reduced the cost of it by not needing the ATSC license to sell it.
I got it for like under 2k like 2.5 years ago when it was one of the highest quality TVs you could buy. Definitely a big recommend from me on the brand.

LCD vs Plasma is now about preference only. Buy what you think looks better. Many of the problems and pros and cons of each are now a thing of the past.

The Toshiba LCD's are full hd have decent contrast and are cheap.. I would get one of those, I have one and no complaints. Spent $1,100 for a 42" LCD 1080p, can't beat that.

Well if its a whopping 80% TV viewing then definitely go with Plasma both Digital & Analogue signal looks ideal with that solution.

If you go plasma just be sure to get a newer Panasonic, they rock. I would get the 1080p though for sure. They are only about $1,400 here.

Sony 50" backprojection LCD here, bought it four years ago and I've had to change to projector-lamp once. In hindsight i could have waited two years and gotten a real LCD 50" for the same price but it doesn't really bother me that it isn't perfectly flat (it's about 20cm deep).
I bought my parents a 40" Sony LCD for their 20th anniversary and overall I'd say Sony's look very sharp and crisp. The black level is the only thing that really bothers me from time to time, you can forget about watching anything that is dark during daytime hehe.
Oh and if you ask me, unless you're buying a 50"+ sized TV just go for HD-Ready (720p) because you wont be able to tell the difference between that and Full-HD (1080p) on anything smaller than 50".

I disagree with this statement. If you sit within 3-5ft of a 42" that isn't 1080p it looks pixelated. I use mine as a monitor and that was one of my major concerns. If your going to be 10ft away all the time probably not a big deal but if you intend on sitting close the res matters.

Depends how well it upscales, been watching 1080p material on my PX80 and no pixelation at all, unless of course you go nearer than a feet but c'mon who watches 1080p material that close...

Who the heck sits within 3ft (1m) of a 42 inch TV? A hint, if you have to twist your neck to see what's going on in the left or right side of the monitor, YOU'RE TOO CLOSE.
My point was that you won't notice the difference between 1080p and 720p in a normal setting. A friend of mine has a 120 inch projector and there you can tell a difference, but it's still not huge.
Of course 1080p is superior, but the only reason i mentioned this is that at the moment i wouldn't say it's worth the increase in price unless you're buying a 50 inches or bigger tv.

I agree that anything smaller than say 50 inch, at regular viewing distances, you will not benefit from 1080p.
But i disagree that you cant see a huge difference on a projector. I have a Mitsubishi 1080p Cinema projector in my HT room, that was professionally calibrated. It is a night and day difference from 720p to 1080p. Id say your friend needs to call a good company to calibrate his projector. But it all depends on his source. If hes using rips or up converting then he wont see a huge difference.

People and their retarded assumptions... "You will never notice the difference," "If you sit this and that from the TV, you will never notice any difference," "without a 100000000000 inch TV you won't benefit from 1080p" and the likes Cranks me every time.
I notice the difference. Wow, I must have Superman eyes!
