 |
I know there are countless topics about this and all but I am too lazy to read through them all and just wish that someone would be oh so kind and answer my questions here.
Got a new laptop coming with 4GB's of ram and a P8400 CPU so I'm gonna go Vista for the first time. I've decided to go 64-bit of course but I'm wondering
release to get?
crack to get with the release?
anything else I should think of?

Just installed vista 64 this morning myself. I got integrated sp1 august by BIE, there is also september edition. You dont need to activate this version as it uses some bios emulation hack. Just when installing make sure you dont enter cd key and disable auto update. Also when burning, burn at THE SLOWEST speed possible. When i burned at max speed, it was giving me error, so i searched and people recommended using slower burning speed and it worked like a charm. Make sure 64 has the drivers needed for progs that you use. I spent a good amount of time searching for my sound card drivers, and i couldnt find (thanks in part to the shitty sound blaster website), but then vista automatically found the right drivers which surprised me.

Thats odd, i had to activate mine since the timing went out and was about to make the system unusable.
Might be because i prefer to keep my windows updated though, but i had to use Vista Loader to make it stay "activated" on that very same release (Microsoft.Windows.Vista.ULTIMATE.x64.SP1.Integrated.August.2008.OEM.DVD-BIE)

Yeah there are some updates that will deactivate the hack, so you have to be careful when updating. Just research which updates are not safe to install. That is why they recommend disabling auto update and do it manually.
And thats the release that i have.

Ok thanks for that. A few more things though.
The best Vista X64 release to get? Been thinking about Microsoft.Windows.Vista.ULTIMATE.x64.SP1.Integrated.September.2008.OEM.DVD-BIE but read that it could stop working?
What version of Vista Loader should I use? Any updates that can disable Vista Loader?

As of now there's no updates that will disable the functionality of any loader 2.1 or higher but you never know for the future.
My Vista is fully updated and the loader still keeps it activated.
As for what version you should get you can get any of the BIE releases, the september one is the same as the august one except it has all the updates for august implemented already.

Thanks for the help all, still what is the preferred version of Vista loader? 3.0.0.1?

One problem I often encountered after I made the switch was that various applications weren't able to register file extensions (to be viewed through them). To "fix" it, i had to run the application "as admin" and register extensions that way. Not certain why, maybe those specific applications weren't vista-ready.
