Is there a campaign mode? Or is it like the other Civilization 4 games?

this game is exactly like the old colonization game

so no

Awesome to hear it is like the original. I tried FreeCol but it was pretty bad, might as well just use DosBox and play the original. But this should give it a good boost in the graphics department, without killing the game. The Settlers II 10th Anniversary was a great remake also _b

Gah, 5.5 hours to go at work.

Just found a.... well... semi-major change form the original Colonization... No more tipee poles... That means you either fight for land with natives or eat the scrappes that are left... no more sharing of land...

That piss me off a little... This means you can't make nice with the natives anymore...

Okayyyyy I've "finished" a game.... at pionner, the second easyiest difficulty... Here's my conclusions:

I got creamed... totally creamed.... now It may be my fault but still I don't understand... I had a solid lead against the rivals colonizers, had the strongest army but still the REF creamed me in under 10 turns. The reason? I had about 30 combats units and 5 battleships (2 Ships of the line and 3 Privateers). The REF? 18 Man-o-War (Which outclass the best ship YOU can have by 12 to 8 in strength by the way.) They also had 150 combat units... 150!!!! Now in the old Colonization that would have been difficult but doable due to several bonuses you get form the Sons of Freedoms (+x% to strength/attack/Defense depending on the Patriotism of the cities.) and from the Other Europeans Support (Once you get enough Crosses or Bells not sure) which gave you tons of units and some Men-O-War to fight the REF Navy.

Theses bonuses don't exist in this game. What this means is that you have to fight an REF on equal terms but each of their soldiers are regulars (I.e: Veterans) yours are mostly Militia. They have 5x the numbers of soldiers you have and they send them in wave of 20-30. Try to buy/build more the REF gets more too. They use their Ship to destroy your fortifications thus destroying your only advantage left....

I ask... WHO THE HELL BALANCED THAT GAME?!?

Again, It might just be me, but the game offer no clues as what to do in any situation. Just the basics.

Same happened to me. Played on conquistador (fourth diff from seven) as I wanted to see how challenging is ai.

First part of the game was EASY, cakewalk, taking candy from the baby. AI factions do nothing, by the middle of the game French had exactly 3 colonies with some piss poor defence in it, and they were second behind me in power. Indians are also no challenge, two cannons bring down any of their cities. Then I started building my economy and army for the challenge with the king, and no matter what I did his invasion force grew all the time, he always had twice as much units as I. Well, I had to declare Independence because they again put in that stupid counter at game end, and then he just ran all over me. There is nothing you can do ether. He just sends his troops in those impregnable Man-o-Wars, makes a huge pack before your city and pounds you to the ground. Cannons now even don't have collateral damage attack so you can't do nothing to their stacks, you can only wait inside your walls and hope they hold.

And I hate what they did with minimap. Razz

No idea ether.

As for king, I retried last game and almost succeeded with this tactic:
You'll need a lot of cannons.
Don't build any city fortifications.
When invasion arrives arm everyone you can with guns and abandon cities. Go into good defended hills or forests around your collonies. Then when ai captures your colonies and AI has his stack in them, counter attack. All their units have huge city attack bonuses, but are weak at defending them, so cannons will kill em easy. I'm just to figure out what to do with kings navy.

First you go into your colonies and click the "governor" button, then click import or exort (both open the same list, so no idea why there's 2 different buttons for this). Then just check what items you want to import or export in every colony and this is what your ships or trade wagons will use as templates for their automated routes.

As for beating the game i found it very simple, i did it on the third difficulty with just 1 colony and 20 or so dragoons and no naval units..
Just dont let the homeland get to many units and it's cake, or in other words, dont buy things from your homeland, dont let the king transfer your treasures, dont kiss his ring, dont do anything that gives him money and he will increase his army very very slowly.

It is possible to win, trust me. Just be strategic with how much money you feed the king, and make sure to have enough guns for every single population you have. It is nearly impossible to win a naval war, so make sure you're beefed up on the ground. Counter units, don't be afraid to attack from inside your cities. King units have huge offensive bonuses, but not so much on the side of defense.

In the original, didn't the usable area around your village expand? You start off with the 3x3 grid but after a while it expanded to 5x5 or something?

as far as i can tell, what expands is the "cultural border" like in civ but you can only place your colonists on the intial 3x3 squares around your colony, or did i miss something?

you can have your colonists work in the 3x3 squares only yes, but specialists make much more use out of each tile, and workers can enhance production even more. Also, you've got your buildlings to deal with as well. You can literally have 20+ pop cities no problem.
