This is a rather strange question. Theres lots of differences between one kind of PvP and the other. Some people like it rough, while others can only take it with plenty of lube.
I would say EVE-Online, but that thing is really only for those who feel pretty f*cking hardcore.
*cut* |
EvE-O is the best group pvp game out there, no question about it. But dont forget that u train your skills real time. If a skill takes a month to complete in the game it takes a month IRL too. So if u want to fly any of those big@ss ships, read; titans, u might have to train skills for a whole year. And thats if u know the right skill path to start with. And even if u know the path and got the time, its costly. Skills, equipment, ships etc costs a fortune.
Still its one of the best mmos out there |
Thing people have to accept in EVE. Just as in real life, theres tihngs you can aspire to achieve, and theres the things you have a real chance to achieve.
Unless you are a marketing genius, a near perfect con artist or a born leader personality, its unlikely you will amass the resources to be able to afford some of the stuff in that game.. Those are simply meant for the insanely rich or the big groups who can pool their resources.
Titans are a good example. They cost around 80 billion ISK, which (considering the ISK/USD rate of unofficial ISK sales - about 5-8 million ISK / USD - a rather conservative estimate) is around 10000 USD. As you can imagine, these things are not built overnight. Definitely not something the average player will EVER has on its own. They are prime targets for all your enemies and the rest of the bad guys out there and its always news when one of them goes down. Yepp.. they -too- can be destroyed.
By the way: You do not have to be lvl999 to make a difference. Skills might take a long time to learn, but unlike other level based MMOs, theres a real match between players of any level. Your skills matter in what you can use, and can provide certain bonuses, but they only go that far.. most of your abilities are determined by what you are flying, and how well it is equipped. That is.. 2-3 newbs can take down a 4-5 year old veteran where alone they would not stand a chance. It is the golden rule of EVE. Teamwork beats soloplay every day, all day.
Show me an MMO where 3 lvl1/10 of max characters have a chance to beat a max level one. |
and that's the problem a whole lot of people (including me) have with EVE
1st to learn skills you have to sit around, i mean, i pay money for this stuff and that what i have to do is wait days and weeks? yeah. not with me buddy.
and then that:

i mean, seriously? wtf? great, so because i'm neither of that and just an average joe I can't see the biggest, stongest etc. ships and equipment in a game?
way to feed my inferiority complex pal
i see that EVE has one of the most socialised communities around - and that's cool -
but there are just some concepts i can't get my head around.
and i'm sure i read a whole lot of time that people say that 2-3 week trial is not long enough to get into the game, so that's meh.

EVE-Online wins, easily.
But it requires a lot from it's players, so it's very niched.
I also think fisk should be unbanned.

Well, i never said its a game for everyone. EVE requires patience and lots of it. About everything in that game takes time. If you are looking for instant gratification gameplay, then EVE is surely not your cup of tea.

Yea, unless you are one of those, you will never have a chance to actually own one of the biggest things in the game. Then again, you have to realize that those are not meant for a single individual either. What good would a ship do for you, which you cant even dock or move around in 'safe' space as it is the size of a smaller moon itself. Not to mention that it requires additional people that open jump beacons for it and bring fuel and stuff.. Nah.. those things are not single player content to begin with. No point in crying for those.
Yes, you are average joe in EVE. Why would you be anything else? Why do you think, that being a 'hero' in other games means more than being an average joe in EVE? After all.. in other games everyone is a hero. Whats the difference? You are still just a drop in the sea of people.
In EVE however, since people are born medicore and most of them stay medicore, talent has room to shine out from the masses.
I really wonder how you could stand out from the crowd in WOW for example, where everyone has much of the same items and maxed out the same skills you did.
In EVE, you can literally control the fate of 1000s of people if you are able to get there. Yes, you have to work hard to get there and you might never be able to get to that level. Then again.. unlike in other games, you can try and you actually have a chance.
Thats the difference between EVE and the rest. EVE is a sandbox, where only your imagination limits your possibilities. Now the thing is.. your imagination can either be a prison if its weak, or set you free if its rich.

Say what? It's Massive, it's Multiplayer, and it's Online. Yep, it's an MMO by definition.

As Csebal and dominae said, Eve-Online by far the best pvp content and generally best mmo if you like scifi and have an above average IQ. Theres noone holding your hand in this game and it is what you make of it, much like life itself.
Theres also corps and alliances for people who's been dealt a bad hand by life most well known being one alliance called GOON, they generally swarm their opponents in grand zerg attacks with big fleets of smaller ships.
Theres roughly speaking 3 sides in the game, the redcoats, the bluecoats and the pirates. And of course some "neutrals" but the sides are really determined by the players as everything is player created, just as Csebal mentioned it's a sandbox, the developers maintain and expand the sandbox every half year.
The players are the kids who play in the sandbox, creating sand castles playing with toy ships and more often than not thoughroughly trouncing eachother castles or taking eachothers good sand spots where the sand has some dysprosium
Of course the sandbox have bullies as well who just like to do maximum damage, and destroy other kids stuff, personally I like that a lot.

hmm, nobody mentioned it, but there is one answer for me:
Darkfall Online.
I don't care that it's STILL in developement (Darkfall Online Forever..?), but i can't play any MMOs now, because of the retarded, repetitive pvp. I'm only waiting for this one.
And from the games that I've actually played - I like Ultima Online best, i've spent few years playing it some time ago - fun like hell.
BTW.
I can't figure, why nobody used the pvp idea, implemented in the mediocre game 'Die by the sword' - it was probably the best one that i've ever seen!

Nothing special about EVE. Still the same button mashing as all other games.
DAoC was the best, hopefully WAR can carry the torch. Imo it has the potential.

Many reviews of WAR suggest that its success will depend on how RvR combat plays out and that this in turn depends on healthy server population.
These days, banking your game on having a healthy player population is risky. It seems like in the past few years, every single MMO that has been released had a very healthy population for a few months then it rapidly dwindled. WAR will suffer more from a low player-base than other MMOs; however it also stands to gain the most if it can maintain a healthy population.
I will wait a few months before trying it.

Now I just havent read reviews, I've actually been playing it since pretty early stages of closed beta, and most pvp games are based on server population. You can remember it from the old zerg days of DAoC.

WAR feedback has been mostly positive for now, not like age of conan where everyone quickly found the game to be far from finished, lacking content and having serious balance issues.
The interest in the game is also pretty big, so I don't see WAR failing to accumulate enough players to make it work well.
It should do well.
Obviously not as well WoW (no game will be that successful anytime soon), but well for normal MMO standards.

I stick to the scenerios. I find a lot of people do the same. Sometimes youll be on a PQ and get jumped by a 3 or 4 and then its like 4v4.

Yea. I wasn't disagreeing with you, but its my opinion that WAR is more dependent upon a healthy server population than other PvP games. And my second point is that WAR can offer more than other PvP games if it can maintain this player population.

eve online gets my vote as well. Spent many a hour/day/week PvP'ing and it never got dull.
The only issue is that it makes you sacrifice your real life as its highly addictive and requires a fair amount of dedication.

Dark Age of Camelot by far has the best PVP system. Though I highly doubt many still play it today and I'm sure new players are nonexistent so being a newbie will no doubt lead to a lonely existence for a while.

That and most(this is a guess, but it's a good one) of them have probably switched to Warhammer that has a similar system.
