???Finnish is 100% not related to Swedish in any way or form. Finnish is part of the Finno-Ugric language group (Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian) etc. Swedish is North Germanic based.
Although Finnish is the biggest minority language spoken in Sweden...but it's totally understandable to most Swedes.

which brings me to another question. alot of people here are fom non english countries. How did you guys learn to speak english so well? Considering you know how to be sarcastic and use innuendo etc

Did you guys learn it at a second langauge and its it mandatory that your fluent in english by the time you graduate highschool?

A prime example of this is Lutz. He's german but he speaks perfect english and understands slang and stuff. You can only understand slang if you have a complete grasp of the english language. Same with Sin.

Im wondering if Lutz and few other members who understand english perfectly took special courses or had a tutor to teach them or they learned it in school.

Which is baffling to me. In canadian schools, especially in Catholic schools (which is what i went to...well, I was expelled from public school in grade 3), we learn french till grade 12...its changed nowadays but when I was in school you learned french from grade 1 to grade 12 in school.

And, well, I can get by speaking french. But I cant write it or and I understand very little french wrriten word.

My niece on the other hand, who's been in a french emersion school since kindergarden, can pretty much speak it fluently. There's still stuff, she doesnt know, but by the time she graduates, she will be able to speak french (canadian, which is the same as Parisian, with minor differences) like someone who was born in quebec and she already has the french accent when she speaks french so by the time she grads, if she speaks french, you wouldnt be able to tell if she's from Quebec (the only french canadian province) or from Ontario.

Like, no matter what differences I have with ppl here, I have a ton of respect for those of you who speak english as a second language and speak it well.

@Syco. In case of the smaller European countries like Holland, Sweden, Norway etc. We start learning English in like the 2nd grade + we don't dub all the TV programs.

Germans are pretty good at English, but no way near as good as the guys from these smaller countries, I am talking in general here.

In my case I had a really super English teacher, she was married to an Englishman, so she spanked our pronunciation until we sounded like we all came from Eton or Oxford.

Later I went to an "American" design school, in Europe, but the curriculum and a lot of the teachers where American...so i picked up a bit of an American dialect there.

And since 16 years I speak English every day at work, as that is the language we use, ok some German as well, but mainly English.

@deelix
You have to remember that
Quote:
Finland was annexed by Sweden during the 13th century and was ruled by Swedish monarchs up until the early 19th century, Sweden was by the Finns often seen as the dominating and suppressive party in their relationship, especially with regard to the status of the Finnish language. Still, during the early 20th century, after Finland's freedom from Russian rule, much of the governmental administration and higher education was conducted according to old tradition in disproportionate amounts in Swedish.

There is also a area in Finland called "Österbotten" (Swe) or "Pohjanmaa" (Fin), there the majority speaks Swedish, but with a heavy dialect of Finnish.

Yeah, thats what I mean Cox, you lucked out in school and then later in life you went to an american school. So obviously you'd pick up on the slang and the innuendos and sarcasim and the neuonces (sp?) of the english langauge.

But I highly doubt most of the ppl on this forum got as lucky as you

And thats what Im interested in. Like in some euro countries, do you have to speak fluent english to graduate?

Hm, I think that in almost all countries in the EU you have English as a 2nd mandatory language (after the mother tongue) pretty early on. It's like that in Sweden and Germany at least. French or German and even Latin are all 3rd languages that you choose later on. But English is pretty much a must all over.

Actually how is it in Canada, do you have to learn French?

yeah, but how come I meet ppl all the time from different parts of europe who speak horrible english if they learn it throughout school? And I dont mean the accent, I mean stuff like
"I going to store to buy smoke and ligour, you wanting me to get a drink for you?"

and another example would be (again paraphasing from a post in PC games section)

"I like game very much. It remember me about doom and fun me had at playing doom"
And I remember the guy was from Switzerland or Sweden or something. Some scandanavian country.

Edited for typos

He he, maybe he was like 12 years old or something .
No idea why"some" have a bad level.

I can imagine that some countries are stronger then others, Scandinavia and Holland are amongst the best I would say.

A huge reason as to why is Television (guessing here). In countries like France, Spain, Italy, Germany and Switzerland all films etc from the US or Eng are dubbed, I think if you are bombarded with English through out your teens etc, you learn it well. Of Course the school system also plays it part.

The Dutch especially are kick ass in languages anyway, not only English. I guess it could have something to do with their history of trading and stuff in the past.
