I think its great (like 4h in). The graphics are very nice, really gloomy / spooky atmosphere, even more so than eg. previous fallouts or stalker. Immersion is incredible when playing it in the middle of the night on a 90" projector screen hehe.
VATS makes the combat really cool. Bethesda has improved since their latest title (Oblivion) i did not expect anything else. The presentation is superb, UI is really nice (very minimalistic).
My only complaint would be that the game world doesnt seem to be very large (it was lacking in Oblivion too), but it's hi quality stuff what's there.

If you don't use fast travel then oblivion seem kinda big.

i found myself using fast travel after i got jumped by some stupid robot in the middle of nowhere and since i was literally limping back to civilization, with barely any ammo left that thing killed me pretty fast (was pretty much in the beginning level 3 or 4 or something)
btw. little strategy help needed
Spoiler: | any weapon particulary useful against deathclaws and mirelurks? except the flamer since i always run out of ammo for it) |
and i ran around an hour or so in rivet city until i figured out how to get in the bow of the ship. (did i miss a dialogue or what? did any one tell you how to get there?)

For mireluks attack the face (knocks off like a huge chunk of HP with VATS).
For rivet city I thought it was pretty obvious. When you approach it the shack says rivet city, and buzzing in the intercom will extend the bridge.

no, i meant the broken off bow or fore? i have no idea about ships, that place you get sent (optionally) to get the "real" history of rivet city
Spoiler: | you gotta jump into the water and dive to a door that's submerged to get it |

Holy crap, I seriously suggest you guys explore it. There are some really awesome locations and I think I just met the ghoul from fallout 2 (the one with the tree growing out of it's head..could be different one, but yeah, this one looks like him...only umm...well, I don't want to spoil this, so find out yourselves)

How are the loading times for you guys? I'm using 8x fw and I'm seeing up to 45 seconds of loading screens when exiting from a location into the outside world. Other than this I'm liking the Oblivion but not quite Oblivion fun.
edit: I'm not sure if it makes a difference but I'm not using a hard drive atm as I left it at a friend's place.

Im a little disappointed to hear that you cannot continue play after completion of the main story... but I dont know that it will truly effect me in the end. I logged A LOT of hours into Oblivion on PC and I never even completed the main storyline. Just as well though I had a ton of fun playing it, becoming the head assasin, taking over the most renowned thief's position, becoming infected with and then curing vampirism. I have to imagine there are just as many side-quests and adventures here in Fallout 3 if you are willing to take the time to do a little exploring. I love games like this. Vast open territories and fairly open-ended gameplay.

For me, the key to enjoying Oblivion was having your own imagination fill out the world for you tbh..
E.g. They're just NPCs at the end of the day, you have to join quite a few dots in your own mind to think they are a clan of vampires in a fully realised world...
Guess this is going to be similar in that respect?

Go see Paladin Gunny in The Citadel. He'll teach you how to use power armor.

How long is the game if you only do main quests?

If you rush and do only the main stuff 15h maybe less.
Really depends on your playstyle though.. I for instance stole from anyone I encountered^^ which I'm sure took quite some time. Beat it at ~18h but did some of the sidequests too so I guess 15h sounds realistic.

For those who've played it enough, did they remove the annoying level scaling shit or not?

Not sure. It seems like it's still there. Not that level matters too much though.

As far as I now there should be a hybrid leveling system for mobs. Meaning they can only level in a fixed frame according to the area.

However, they have changed a lot: graphics are crisper and gameplay is a lot more fun (thanks to V.A.T.S.). I don't think it matters which version you get...I use V.A.T.S. to target stuff, and rarely do I have to aim to shoot unless I run out of AP. It's not the best game ever, nor is it revolutionary, but the environment is fun and the story is massive. Well worth the sticker price if you liked Oblivion even a little. |
Yeah I agree. I've played like 25+ hours so far and I've barely touched the main story line. Just been doing side-quests and exploring, tons of fun if you ask me.
Bottom line is that if you HATE Oblivion with a vengeance (like i know some people do) you will definitely hate this game too. For the people who hate Oblivion, this IS Oblivion with guns. For me, it's a fun spinoff from the original Fallout-series.

Well the overall sentiment seems to be very positive so I'm happy. I'm still waiting for the PC release though, it's hard as hell. Does the game hold interest, do you get the urge to explore?

Completed it, so ugh...where are all the endings...? There are 2 for good characters, both almost identical. I'm guessing there are 2 for bad and maybe something different for the neutrals...but...is that it?

pretty much decided to disregard that auto target system, think even if outcomes are heavily variable dependant it will still take the fun out of the game tbh....not played it yet so can't be sure, but it seems like it will 'take you out of the game '....

Me being a mostly PC player, I found that realtime combat wastes a lot of ammo. It's not exactly easy to hit the enemies, most of em move so damn fast.
I usually use realtime only when the enemies are over longer distances; it's funny how in VATS i only get like 20-30% chance to hit, and yet I almost always hit in realtime.
Guess the playtester's bitching worked, since initially your skill with the weapons affected the chance to hit much more drastically.
Edit: anyone else feel the combat in general is a tad too easy (I know I just said that aiming isn't exactly easy, but things like taking damage etc. don't feel very threatening)?
I'm playing on normal, and I couldn't have been more than level 3 when I first went downtown and owned the super mutants that were there. When you consider they had weapons like missile launchers and miniguns, and I just had a sucky bolt-action rifle and a few 'nades, something quite doesn't add up.

It looks like it was the hard drive. Pop it out for some headbashingly long load times.

Seriously, if you have no health and you're in the museum at the start of the game(2 hours in), how the heck do you complete it without restarting the whole game?
