|
 |
While the four civilized races battle back the voracious Zuul and seek advantage over each other, a ghost from the past returns to the galaxy in the form of the manipulative Morrigi. Already known for their dark crow-shaped attack drones and deadly traps, this race once thought long extinct, returns looking for vengeance.
Using never-before-seen weapons, ships and tactics, the Morrigi fall upon the other five races of the Sword of the Stars universe, who must now adapt to the ancient masters of space or be destroyed.
Time is of the essence as world after world falls to the black winged ships that surge out of the dark like A Murder of Crows.
* A New Sixth race – The Morrigi, who appeared as a series of mysterious random events in Born of Blood (the first Sword of the Stars expansion pack), continues to evolve the ever-expanding Sword of the Stars universe
* New Ship Sections - Over a dozen new ship sections for all races to match against your opponents
* Unique ‘Grav Flock’ Drive System for Morrigi Ships – The more Morrigi ships in a fleet, the faster they can travel, continuing the racial diversity unique to the Sword of the Stars gameplay experience
* 15 new weapons
* 27 new technologies and the new Xeno-Cultural and Drones tech trees
* Sword of the Stars gameplay continues to deepen with Civilian populations, independent worlds, Espionage options, and demands for planetary surrender
* Drone carrying ships in all three size classes
* Construction ships, a variety of orbital stations, spy ships, Police Cutters, and more
* A whole new set of GUI enhancements and additions

A new expansion for Sword of the Stars that I'm looking forward to. Supposed to be coming out this September.

Looks good. I need a good space 4X game, as there was not one good for some time now.

Sins of a Solar Empire is better, I think.

They aren't really comparable. Sins is pretty much a straight up RTS in space, while SotS is more of a real 4x (akin to MOO1 but with real-time tactical battles). Since I love MOO1, I really like SotS and am reasonably hyped for this second expansion. It's pretty much an automatic buy for me since this expansion seems to add even more than Born of Blood.

They lost me as a customer when they decided that only people who buy the "CE" edition gets the dedicated server.
I think I got as much right to it when I bought the original game and the expansion pack, I don't see myself paying for something I already got.

Same here actually.. that move really pissed me off big time.
Wouldnt have they done that, i would have bought the expansion without hesitation.. Now the only way im going to consider buying it, if they actually add everything the CE had exclusive to it to the expansion as well.
Since this is unlikely to happen, i doubt i will buy the new expansion. Really a shame tho, the company does show some promise with this genre.. dunno why they had to pull this CE thing on us.

Looked at their site again. Apparently the publisher is to blame here. Look for castewarkp answers in this thread. Pages 2 and 4 namely.
Anyways, I'm looking forward to this new expansion. From the press-release it seems it's gonna add some new dimensions to the game.

Actually, someone mentioned that 1.5.3 patch adds the dedicated server to the BOB version as well.. going to check that out myself some time..
It would at least make me think about continuing to support them... then again, the whole idea of releasing such a tool as an exclusive addition to a gold edition of a game still pissed me off.
EDIT: strike that, in a more recent thread that info was confirmed to be inaccurate.

Does anyone know if this game requires a cdkey to install?

It uses the one you originally entered for the base game. It's automatically copy-pasted when needed.

Can you play Murder of Crows online with a cdkey from the original game?

If it's legit, maybe. Dunno. Perhaps the online servers have other ways to check the nature of your copy.

What the fuck is this?!
Never heard of this game before, is it worth trying out? Anything like Galactic Civilization II?

I just started playing, starting with the BoB addon and I am loving it.
I'd say it's a cross between Galciv II and Starfleet command. More combat oriented and light on the micromanagement.
Ship design is closer to StarFleet command in that you modify weapon slots that use covering arcs rather Galciv's slap parts on to raise stats.
Fleet logistics also plays a role as you have to keep fleets fueled and repaired otherwise you might just find your huge armada stranded.
Very nice game.

If Galciv is the Civ of space 4x, this would probably be regarded as the Total War of space 4x. Another way to roughly describe the game is this recipe:
1. Take the colony management and research from MOO1
2. Blend the combat from Imperium Galactica and Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
3. Add a decent AI, devoted devs, a fistful of originality and great fluff
4. Stir until happy
The basic game was an ok title, basic game + Born of Blood was great, when AMoC gets fully patched this game will be among the greatest space 4x ever. Simple as that. It's nigh unplayable for some folks in its current state though, so YMMV before patch. If you really love your micro in your turnbased 4x you might be dissappointed though.

Does this game suffer from massive turn-times late in the game? Space Empires V had tolerable turn-times when you started a game, but by the 100th turn you had to wait several minutes.

Not really, on a c2d 2.4 ghz I have never encountered massive turn-times (Though I had some bug which made the computer go into some endless loop with an earlier version of the game). It can take quite a while to load really massive battles though, especially if they include a lot of different ship designs. Anything from 20 secs to 5 minutes depending on your machine. I'm not sure about it, but it feels like loading times have improved some in the latest version though.

One other thing that is real cool about this game is how you gain techs.
Basically the tech tree is huge and for most of the techs you have a "chance" to get it depending on your race.
That leads to having usually different techs while playing with different races (liir get a lot of techs, hivers get very few), and even with the same race it may happen you'll never discover one particular path of technology and you must research something else: each game will be different and force you to design new ships and adapt to what you have

I've been pretty busy, so haven't been able to play the expansion yet. Unplayable how?

Some people are getting loads of crashes and there's also the AI not being able to handle the new morale system and thus collapsing on itself (this can be somewhat mitigated by boosting AI starting conditions though). Supposedly the next patch is going to fix most issues though.

I love the game (Bought the first one and both expansions as well as the Collector's Ed.) but I'm kinda up on the fence about smallish semi-expansions. What makes it all so good for me is how well it all fits together as well as the wonderful fluff that really fleshes out the races and makes the SotS universe come alive, coupled with the AI that actually plays the races to go along with the fluff. If this is *only* a stuff pack with techs and shiny weapons, color me disappointed. However, Kerberos are one of those few companies I really trust until I'm proven not to, so I'm hopeful.

Have these problems been resolved by now? Current version is 1.6.6b, it seems.
