As for this:

because the game's world is based on an alternate history
played it 'til 5am and gotta say that it's damn hard to put down.
vats is insanely satisfying, i could roam around for hours crippling and dismembering raiders using every random weapon that i come across.
it's interesting to see how people seem incapable of enjoying a game if it doesn't conform to each and every expectation they have about it.
just like dead space not being scary enough. i went in expecting a fun/good game, not a scary one. and fuck yes, it was fun.
keep your expectations in check people. don't let them ruin a game for you.
get rid of the whole contraption that you built in your head around how the game's supposed to play/look/etc. take things for what they are and they might become a lot more palatable.
a bit off-topic, so skip if you're bored already:
Spoiler: | i'm all for complaining if there's stuff to be complained about. i don't say that you should keep your mouth shut about lo-res textures or whatever makes a game less than it could've been. but it's a really long way from here 'til letting these complaints overshadow everything else.
eating a beef steak is better than complaining that it's not pork. 'cause it doesn't HAVE to be pork, ya dig?
except, of course, if you're one of those people that only like pork, and nothing else. in which case, pal, you're missing out on stuff. you're prolly one of those that didn't like indiana jones either. and if you fall into the old-indy-fan-that-hated-the-new-one category, sorry to tell you this(but you prolly know it's true), you're prolly not that much fun to be around.
try an experiment, if ya like. go out and try telling a chick about indy, to keep the same example. tell her about how it sucked for having that kid in it, for resorting to CGI (my eyes are bleeding, i can't unsee it, etc), and for whatever other reason you can come up with. see how long it takes 'til she's bored and thinks about being some place else.
now try the same with someone else, but tell her that the movie was cool as fuck and that indy looks as good as ever and that it was a great adventure and fucking joy from start to finish and that you couldn't stop smiling for the whole movie. see how long it takes 'til she says she'd like to see the movie with you.

Nice possitive review :
Quote: | Spoiler: | OK, here's the real deal for anyone wondering how this game compares to Fallout 1 & 2 and to Oblivion. I've played maybe 10 hours of this game so far and below is a truly neutral, unbiased opinion meant to help those original Fallout fans who are trying to decide whether or not to play this game.
My "credentials"?
I can confidently say that nobody is a bigger Fallout 1 fan than I am. I'm sure millions of people liked it just as much as I did, but nobody liked it more. Fallout 1 makes #1 on my list of all-time favorite games. I played the hell out of that game in every conceivable way. Like a lot of people, I kinda enjoyed Oblivion but didn't believe it lived up to the hype and was terrified and enraged at the thought of an "Elder Scrolls: Fallout".
First of all, this IS Fallout. It IS worthy of carrying the Fallout name, contrary to what I believed before I played it. Sure, it can be picked apart and made to sound like a bad game, but I'm pretty sure you could pick apart Fallout 1 and make it sound awful too. This game is Fallout. This game is NOT Oblivion with guns. Yes, it feels like the same engine. No, it doesn't feel like you're playing Oblivion.
Dialog:
For me, this was one of my biggest fears about this game. The dialog options and the consequences that followed really was one of the best things about Fallout. Without it, I'm not even sure I would've finished a single playthrough. I'm happy to say that Bethesda nailed it. Just like in previous Fallout games, there's usually an option to be friendly to the person, an option to be neutral and an option to be a sarcastic [censored]. Which brings me to the language use. It's very well done. It sounds natural and the swearing doesn't feel forced. There are the nice old ladies who speak properly and never swear, and then there are the roughnecks who swear constantly and everything in between. Every person I've met so far really has their own personality, just like in previous Fallouts. I've sweet talked my way out of certain situations and I've also pissed people off to the point they attacked me. The dialog in this game is perfect.
Combat:
The combat in this game feels good. VATS is not an "I Win" button, nor can you really tear it up FPS style at level 1. VATS isn't an instant kill, that's the big thing. Many times the enemy is still alive after I come out of VATS and sometimes they still have the majority of their health. VATS doesn't break the combat system at all. When I played Fallout 1, most of my shots were aimed shots and this game is no different. The normal shooting is first person, but it's not really run and gun. I've actually had enemies at point blank with my target squarely in the middle of their face, and I missed when I pulled the trigger due to my low skill with that weapon type. You're not guaranteed to hit a target just because they're in your crosshairs, and that's why this is NOT a FPS.
Quests:
I'm happy with these too. I haven't done much of the main quest, but every quest I've done has had multiple ways of finishing them and there are actual consequences which cannot be reversed. More than once, I finished a quest and then when I actually saw the consequences, I wished I had done it differently. In that respect, it's just like real life. There's not really much else I can say here because I hate spoilers. The quests in this game are definitely Fallout quests.
Mature Content:
No worries, it's all there. Yes, I mean all of it. Swearing, prostitution, drugs and of course, loads of violence. I honestly don't see this game as "watered down" in any way, as far as mature content goes.
The Bad:
There honestly isn't much about this game I don't like, although there are a few things. For one, it's lame having to repair weapons. When you pick up multiples of the same weapon, you can't just sell them like in previous Fallouts. You have to use them to repair the weapon you've been using. To me, this is an unnecessary addition to the game. I don't like the idea of getting a bad ass weapon, then having it slowly do less and less damage until it finally breaks or you repair it. On a side note, that was one of the most frustrating things about Oblivion also. Another bad thing about this game as opposed to previous Fallouts is that there is a wide variety of clothing and armor you can wear (good in my opinion) but they all have added stat bonuses (BIG no-no for a Fallout game). For example (this isn't a real item, as far as I'm aware) you could pick up mechanic's overalls and when you equip them, you'd get something like +5 to your repair skill. Is this good for a fantasy-style game? Sure. For Fallout? Hell no. However, it really hasn't been as much of a problem as just an annoyance.
Conclusion:
Sorry that this turned out to be so long, but thank you to everyone who read it. To sum everything up, this game deserves to carry the Fallout title in every way. I was extremely skeptical and thought I'd just be playing Oblivion 2 for the most part, but I was wrong. If you liked Fallout 1 and 2, then you'd be stupid not to play this game and insane if you didn't like it. I know there's been a LOT of negativity on the internet ever since it was announced that Bethesda would be making this game and honestly, I was the source of some of it. I was wrong though, and I'm here to say...
Bethesda, you walked the walk and didn't just talk the talk. On behalf of all Fallout fans, thank you for making this game. Well done, guys. Well done. |

Still downloading, so haven´t an opinion yet...but I like being a bit hyped when the game´s around the corner .

Oblivion: Road warriors revenge isnt a bad game. VATS is cool thankfully since the real time combat is such utter shit as to be unbelievable. Menu's,map, waypoints, teleporting, inventory, itemization, minigames etc etc is almost exactly the same as oblivion.
A "bad guy" proximity detector is such a stupid idea. Its not possible for any enemy to surprise you in any circumstances. How someone could design an inventory was awful as fallout 3's intentionally is beyond me. Think im going to wait stop playing untill decent mods are available before purchasing. Same thing i did with Oblivion.

Come on.. the game is playable, but the graphics are terrible. Its the same bland color, and it looks like the whole world has had the color sucked out of it (edit: Yes I know the world has blown up, but bombs don't make vibrant colors disappear). From afar, water and other things are extremely squarish, weapon models are severely crap looking and character models are nothing special. And that's playing on max details 1920 x 1200.
You're kidding yourself if you think the graphics are 'extremely nice'.

I put it on very hard, and after an hour of playing I found it very tedious. I HATE those fireants. OMG why does there always have to be animals that are trying to kill you in every freaking game =( Btw: is it possible to have people join your party as in FO 1/2?

To be quite honest, graphically it does look quite good. Textures could've been a bit more detailed in my opinion, but the whole grayish look of it all doesn't annoy me really, fits the story.
Plus, I'm pleasantly surprised with the performance, was expecting horrible things after the early comments on the Russian version.
1680x1050, details set to Ultra, 4xAA and 15xAF (I think, alttabbed atm so can't check, I'm sure about the ultra bit though), and I'm averaging at around 50 FPS outdoors; indoors I was capped at 60 (VSYNC wouldn't go off). When I just got out of the vault and was overlooking the wasteland, it hovered between 40 and 45.
Specs: C2D E8400, 4GB PC6400, 9800GTX - All at stock speeds.
Combat so far has been a bit too easy though

Bitching time.
Ok, installed the game without a hitch ( G4WL crap included ), selected my charater, read the special book, got to the birthday party yada yada yada. So I try my brand new Pipboy 3000 ( or 300 or something ) to check the inventory out. After I was done, I pressed the Pipboy key again to get out... nothing happened. Had to quit to the desktop.
Searched around a bit and it seems that if you assign the Pipboy key to any other than Tab, it will let bring up the Pipboy with that key, but you'll have to press Tab again to get out.
Also, this is definitely a Bethsoft game: crashed to desktop the first time I exited the game from the main menu.

It doesn't wooork, or rather I get problems in game with menus. Like it can freeze during the main menu phase and freezes (music continues to play) when I pickup "you are special" booklet. Otherwise graphics seems to work fine. Help me, oh generic message board!

Graphics at absolute max, 8x AA and AF, everything is so smooth and amazing out in the big world..
But regardless of what i do, even if i lower all the settings to their minimum, after a bit of exploration (loading and unloading of textures), the entire game craaaaaawlllllllls down to a sluggggish goo..
Only out in the big world though, not in the cities etc.
Same as in the early Oblivion days.. Same memory leaks.. GOD, cant they learn?
Apart from that, the game does seem really nice, but its sooooooo Oblivion'ish.. I cant see an npc walk around and talk without thinking about Oblivion, and i cant have any dialogue with any character without thinking im playing an updated Oblivion lol.
And the combat is essentially exactly the same as in Oblivion, yeah yeah VATS and all that, the real-time feel is exactly like in Oblivion. Same old, same old..
I love this setting, but i hate the constant Oblivion-flashbacks. I hated Oblivion..

Baleur try setting this from 0 to 1 in my documents/my games/fallout3/FalloutPrefs.ini
bUseHardDriveCache=1 - Although Windows should be using your hard drive cache by default for all drive operations, setting this variable to 1 should ensure it does. Note that some people report that enabling this setting can increase stuttering, so experiment to see if it helps or makes things worse for you. If in doubt, leave it at 0.

Woah, ran it at 1920x1200 and it was getting like 20fps lol so I though "hm it doesn't look that good, so why so slow"? Turns out it has enabled 4xAA and 15xAF by default...

Here, bUseHardDriveCache is located in Fallout.ini and not in falloutPrefs.ini!

No! It's located in both, FALLOUT.ini is a default ini I compared it to falout_default.ini and they are identical, falloutprefs on the other hand has all the changes I made and my gpu name.
