Installation goes fine, I then double click the hl2autoinstaller.exe, a window pops up for a split second and nothing else happens. I click the shortcut on the desktop to play the game and steam opens in the background but nothing else happens, its in task manager, but it never really starts up. any help is appreciated thanks!

remove any kind of steam objects before starting the installation (dlls, folders, reg entries) and install the game into a 4-slash-directory e.g.
g:\games\valve\half-life\
that worked.
by teh way, go and run cmd and start the hl2installer via the command prompt and past the error message. i think yours prolly says "failed to start steam engine" or something similar to that.

friend of mine has the wierd problem - he runs hl2installer.exe from the cd5 but nothing happened.

I have the same problem:
F:\VENGEANCE>hl2install
Half-Life 2: Source Installer - hCUPa
---------------------------------------------------------------
Failed to startup steam!
Even when i uninstall + remove steam*.* + clean my register
and after that do a complete re-install in dir c:\games\valve\halflife2
HELP !!
